I recommend 8.1. I recently went from 7 to 8.1 and things are running more smoothly, especially Steam, which stopped working on my Windows 7 machine after a recent update.

I never used Windows 8 so i guess i can't have much of an opinion in this thread but I'm really content with my Windows 7.

Windows 8(.1) is something you can live with if you spend a while setting it up to be remotely usable. Primarily this involves a start button application (classic shell works for me), setting it to boot to the desktop, disabling 'hot corners', removing as many of the metro apps as possible and setting up default programs to ignore them.

After that, for the most part it is pretty much a slightly flatter looking Windows 7 with a few residual annoyances (one that I've yet to find a way to revert to something sensible is the available networks UI that appears after clicking the icon in the notifications bar; a massive, full screen height, metro style block, showing me less information and giving me fewer actions to perform than the more compact Windows 7 dialogue box) and several technical improvements that are actually desirable.

If you don't want all this hassle, go for Windows 7. If you don't mind the metro rubbish, or are happy to go through the process of circumventing it, you might find Windows 8 to be better in some ways, though I have heard of some people complaining of mouse lag in certain games and potential incompatibilities with old games (though I haven't experienced these problems at all myself).

Windows 8, its faster and just as easy to use.

There are rumblings that Windows 9 will either be free or a cheaper upgrade than Microsoft have offered before so I'd say 8(.1).

Linux and mac are not good for gaming even if you have decent hardware you also will get in trouble alot even if you know how to work with terminal ..etc...

64-bit Windows 7 (at least Home Premium ofc). I can't express my frustrations about Windows 8 and i don't prefer to say anything beyond that, since a lot of fanboys all around the internet.

Windows 8 is ALOT different from earlier ones, so I suggest Windows 7 ;)

Windows 8.1 is decent enough but depending on how knowledgeable you are about computers you will have to spend quite a bit of time learning the differences and making changes for things you prefer in how Windows 7 does it.

To put it another way if you don't want any delay or annoyances between getting and playing buy w7, if you don't mind working for a bit to change all defaults into usable ones then after that you have a better machine.

I'm using 8.1 on my laptop and 7 on my PC. 8 is hot garbage, and 8.1 isn't much better unless you're using a tablet. It's entirely designed for tablets, though by tablet UI standards, it's still inferior to Apple and Kindle products. In terms of reserving RAM for gaming, there is no reason to buy 8.1 over 7, and if you have a PC, 7 will operate much more naturally for you. Down the line Windows will have DirectX's that are exclusive to 8.1 that companies use. Right now, not many games use the latest exclusive DirectX in any major way.

I had to make the same choice last year, I went with windows 7, sounds like 8 has gotten a lot better since then but I'm not sure if 7 is still the best option, there isn't anything wrong with 7 in my opinion and it works great but I only used 8 on my friends computers so I would be biased to say pick 7 instead of 8.

I've used every version of Windows since 3.1. Windows 8 took some getting used to at first, especially since Windows 8 didn't really have a good tutorial until 8.1. Now that I'm used to it, I prefer it to 7. The boot time is much faster and some of the metro apps are useful for me, although I still use the desktop primarily.

I play a wide range of games and have never had a gaming issue with it and gaming speeds are comparable to 7. I don't see any reason to install an older OS when you have the option to go with 8.1 unless there is a huge price difference or you have a hard time adjusting to new things. I liked it enough to upgrade my laptop as well as my desktop. Watch a youtube vid or two to learn the shortcuts in Windows 8.1 (like the right click in bottom left corner menu) and it'll make your experience a lot better.

I'd avoid Windows. Closed source and restrictive OS are a very antiquated. My recommendation would be to look into Linux. The gaming support on Linux has vastly improved in the recent years. A trend that will only gain more support as companies like Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle and more developers invest in unleashing the potential Linux has as an OS.

If you look at my Steam profile you will see that I have a considerably large number of games. Only 102 on those games play native on Linux through Steam for Linux. For the other 204, I use PlayOnLinux to play them on my Linux system. The majority of my games run perfectly fine. Only a handful have issues. However thankfully, the open source WINE project is constantly making improvements and I know it is only a matter of time before I am able to enjoy those games on my Linux box as well.

I recommend:

• GNOME Ubuntu 13.10 - This is my preferred Linux distro. It's very customization and has a simple learning curve.

• PlayOnLinux - This is a very simple and efficient way to get your windows only games to work on Linux. I recommend you follow this guide. That guide will help you properly set up your Windows Steam library.

• You can check the WINE Appdb to check the compatibility of your Windows only games.

windows 8 is a copy of windows 7 but with some better tools

well i just finished my computer build and i went with windows 8.1 64bit. And everything works fine and any game works.(except league of legends) but i fixed it by compatibility windows 8. I could run any game with the highest graphics. The menu for windows 8 is kinda weird, but you could get used to in a week. i would say go with windows 8 if you like or window 7. they both work great and both are the same thing
