My mom is French and I remember her mentioning Belote was played a lot in France, or at least in her region (Lyon) - I never learned it, though. I'm not sure if even she knew how to play it, but it's been so long she likely doesn't remember now, even if she did at the time. Just wanted to comment because it's been so long since I've heard that word, so I was surprised to read it here. ^^

It was from my grandparents generation, they all played belote together (and scrabble) and it was a really super extra important moment for them, but they never wanted to teach us unfortunately, they just said :
RIP belote

Lol, makes sense! Luckily, it's rare that card games are ever completely lost to time - you can likely learn it online, and once you learn it, it's much easier to teach people around you. You could revive Belote! :D

I'll try ! To learn again french tarot, and then belote (but i don't promise to succed for belote because i never played it !)
I hope your mom will teach you too !

Belote is not so hard.
My grand parents played Rami which was WAY more complicated than belote was.

Oh i forgot that they played this one too ! Thanks for the recall !

Oh really? It's funny because I learned to play Rami easily when I was kid with my grandmother and mother (and loved this game) but I didn't understand the rules of Belote! I should give another chance to belote and check on internet how to play it.

It's maybe a me problem , i found all the combination + transformation rules complicated as hell !
I just read on google some rami rules, and still do not clearly understand them 😢

I might just do that, thanks for the suggestion :)

I knew there was something fishy here :D
You're polite, you talk about belote, and you are in a very ducky group (and probably read a very ducky magazine) :D
Some of these things do not combine together , there must be a trap somewhere!

Oh you know this ducky magazine ? It's the best videogames magazine here, they have a super french forum too. I'm glad that you're here tonight, i was waiting for you good luck for the giveaway and thank you for the bump !

I've never heard of that game! If you look up something like "play belote online for free" you can find a few sites to learn & play against real people or bots! There's also a few apps on the google play store :) I might try it out too cause I love card games! Thank you for the info and cool giveaway :D

Actually i didn't think about it and it's a really good suggestion, i'll try that for both tarot and belote thank you ! ^_^

The spanish card set is 40 cards, 10 per suit. 1 to 7, then the valet/jack (sota), the horseman (caballo) and the king (rey). The suits are gold (main), cups, clubs and swords. There are so many games to play with them, or to bet with... There is a variant where the numbers go 1 to 10, matching the french/poker deck. The most known spanish card manufacturer is Fournier. I still have two Fournier decks circa 1930 of deluxe cards covered with ivory powder (before cards were coated with a thin plastic layer). Legacy from my uncle grandpa.

My aunts play belote all the time but as far as I know they're using regular cards for it, not tarot decks? Tarot itself was really popular in my high school, I played a few games at some point but then I got into Magic: The Gathering and pretty much only played that during breaks :x
I like divinatory tarot a lot though, I own a few decks ranging from common Rider-Waite / Marseille to weirder ones.

Yes you're absolutely right, belote is played with 32 cartes. That's why there are 3 main cards decks that were often seen before.
Tarot 78 with the excuse and the atouts
54 to play for example réussite (klondike)
And the one used by our elders, the beautiful 32 to play belote ;)
About divinatory i understand that some can collect them because there are really beautiful ones.

I love French Tarot!
My grandmother taught me how to play when I was a kid and I totally forgot all the rules until I came to France and began playing with friends.
I liked it so much that I taught my colleagues and we were playing in the downtime, albeit with mixed success xD
It was a while ago so I'm sure I forgot again lol but it shouldn't be very hard to remember even though it's quite complex as a strategy game if you play it right.

Thank you for telling this beautiful story, i hope you'll have the chance to play it again with your friends !
Here it was often played with the family, or during long evenings, or during the grape harvest, sometimes with a few coins that the winner would spend on drinks to share with the other players.
Yes i remember it was extremely strategic that what makes it beautiful, and that's why it would be sad if we would all forget it.

Do you have a national cards game too ?
i think in brazil the most popular card game would be Truco, it mostly played by older people in "botecos" (a kind of a street bar), and well, since the people playing are usually drunk, it can get really agressive and loud
there's a lot of variations depending in what region do you live, the popular ones are Paulista (São Paulo State) and Mineiro (Minas Gerais State)
i only played in my school years in class breaks, i think the team system make it fun to play
thanks for the GA and nice one btw, i got it here on SG a month ago and i can't stop playing (almost 85h now) XD

Ah lol i love the way you tell it !
I took a look at the wiki link you sent, it's super interesting cause it looks pretty close to tarot at least the bets system. But here it's really friends & family friendly, some rare people play it in some street bar too but not only. That's why we try to keep the bets very low, for people to not fight between, it can be some euros and the winner share a drink to others, or it can be just some cents for fun.
Yeah i love the GA game too, didn't manage to win the harder difficulties however ! :D

Hello, first i won't tell you what is the giveaway, it's rare but for this one i will just keep the name for me. It's unbundled.
So tonight i would like to talk you about french tarot.
It's a cards game that people played here, with some complicated rules.
The cards are all beautiful and i love them all, because they have funny illustrations. Tarot uses all the cards :
1-10 + jack + knight + queen + king + fool + (and it's interesting here) 21 special cards
Even when people don't know to play tarot here, they often own a tarot cards game, or use some of the cards to play something else.
Here it's generational. The old people played an even more complicated game that i don't know to play : belote.
The older sometimes played tarot. And the younger often just know poker, because poker is really fun and the rules are easy to understand.
I'm from Y generation, older teached me how to play french tarot and i forgot, because you've to play to remember. Yes i'm sad because i can't find on steam a good solo french tarot game that could teach me again. There is one with some AI but i'm not sure it's enough because it's a really interesting and strategic game, and there is no tuto included.
Do you have a national cards game too ? Is it still played often in your country or people play poker ?
I'm not always here but love this website. So i chose this giveaway to... i hope you'll love it ! :D
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/0l9€$/
