It's not specifically Lovecraft - no overt references to it - but it has a really dark and creepy atmosphere with some horror elements. I've never read any Lovecraft myself but after so many responses in this thread I hope to get around to it soon.

1) I saw a "WTF is..." on it from TotalBiscuit and it went straight on my wishlist. I love the theme and exploration motif. I've purposely avoided other videos, because I don't want any of the game spoiled for me when I eventually get it.
2) I sadly missed the free weekend, too much other stuff going on.
3) Captain Sofa, of course.

As always, my username :D
And my personal opinion:
Game are too hard - there also no difficulty level - what kills this game. There are problem for me to get a fuel / supplies for my crew. Enemies (crab) are too fast compared to my ship.
I got finally an unknown error - game hungs time after time and i can't play more - reinstall failed, create new ship - failed...
And my voyage over sea was ended one day before free weekend is over.

I have really wanted this game for a long time. Dark mysterious waters, monsters, and a hungry crew sounds like a lot of (dangerous) fun!
Did not play the free weekend. Oh how RL gets in the way :(
Hmmm, a captain you say? Aye Aye C'ptn Stinky!

I really like the art style (Screenshots) and i heard it has some pretty good story telling and game mechanics. The song from dan bull about the game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmuhWpp8fZw) revived my interest in the game.
Did'nt play on free weekend :(
i will name my first captain "Blau Bär", because off a TV-Show i watched as a kid about a Blue Bear who was a captain.

Well, I am always interested in Indie games and this games seems great; considering the reviews and all the feedback. Also, you stated that the devs are really cool, that makes it even better.
I also like to grind for challenging achievements and invest many hours in order to get them and this game looks just suitable for that.
I didn't. I wasn't aware of it.
I will name my first captain 'Newgate'.

I fell for it's unique world, for opportunity to immerse into enchanting waters of the Zee, to learn it's obscure history and secrets. I also love how games allow you to create your own interesting story, that not only affect your current playthrough, but also create a connection with previous and future attempts, linking them in one continuous story.
I actually don't agree with everyone calling it's dark, for me it was more sense of melancholy and despair. And that's why I love how fantastically name suits the game - it's not that it filled with darkness and misery, but absence of light, hope and active cheerful life that create such deep atmosphere, evokes feeling of being lost and stuck.
Yeah, I've sunk about 18 hours into its deep waters. And even more into Fallen London, but that was some time ago, I'll probably start a new one soon. And if I remember correctly - invites give you some new stories or other bonuses, so I'll be happy to assist you if you want.
Game doesn't allow you to name your child, so I can't promise to name my firstborn after you, so it'll be an honor of my first captain if I win. If I'll buy it myself, then it'll be Nemo. Nope, not the fish, the Jules Verne's captain.
And thank you for your great and interesting initiative. It was interesting to read ^_^

I like how you've chosen a name but at the same time haven't chosen a name ;)
I find it quite a melancholic game too and I love the atmosphere it creates. I like to imagine the world as the zailors see it - utter blackness outside of the pool of your lights, occasional sparkles from the Neath roof and pure terror at the appearance of any sort of creature or ship of unknown intention.

i use it since super famicom in childhood. it easy to put name via gamepad and that time not much on choice to choose name. most game start curser at that alphabet quick name to quick play.

What makes this game interesting to you?
It looks like something I haven't seen or played before and this makes it very interesting. The atmosphere and concept seem great and I would love to give it a try.
Did you play the free weekend and if so, what did you think of it?
Unfortunately I couldn't play it because I had no internet at that time so I missed it and really hate that fact. Makes me want to try it out and play it even more.
What will you name your first captain?

I've played the free weekend and there are some aspects I loved about the game.
First of, the obvious dark narrative. I was looking for an alternative to Sid Meier's Pirates (basically for the naval battles), but was amazed on how deep this game goes. The impending sense of dread along with the shady bits of tale here and there make it worth by itself.
I also enjoyed the semi-roguelike side of it. Yes, there is permadeath, but you can work on what your next captain will inherit and how you can benefit him. I'm not a particular fan of roguelikes, but this made me look at it on a different perspective.
Of course, shopping and upgrades! The immense options to upgrade your vessel (and buy new ships) added yet another layer of complexity and choices to be made. I didn't explore much of it basically because in only played for some hours (with a load of captains that kept dying...), so it's a long haul game to reach the top notch stuff. Hard game, but it makes every new engine upgrade a valuable acquisition, not something you do on a whim.
The naval combat itself wasn't actually what I loved more about it. Well, not in the traditional sense anyway. I loved the cloak and dagger approach more, turning the lights off and trying to get the others from behind for a devastating blow. Seems very appropriate, given the overall dark environment.
Captain names hmmm.... they all have "bone" in it (as my RL nickname is Johnnybone), so the half a dozen captains I made that weekend were named like Bonesaw, Ripbone, Dreadbonez, etc.
Likely, if I do win a copy of the game, the trend should stay the same. That or Captain Blondebeard of course.

The shipping upgrades are definitely not to be taken lightly. A bigger ship with a bigger cargo hold or a stronger hull is obviously beneficial, but unless you can afford a bigger engine it's likely to kill you by eating all your fuel. My current captain can afford the merchant cruiser at the moment but not a better engine so he's going to hold off until he saves some more money.

It seems, even with my limited experience on the matter, that it's a game with a very long longevity that pays off a cautious approach.
I also liked the different factions around, that sometimes it's a bit hard to put a finger on who you shoud be friends of (or who will shoot you). Still, I'm not sure that part becomes old after some gameplays, because even with the random map placement, I'm guessing the stories don't change from seed to seed.

I played it during the free weekend but it was on my wishlist since i first heard of. I loved the dense dark atmosphere of this fallen world. It was so exiting to learn everything on my own. Like how this world works and how to not to die within the first week ^^. I did never save manualy therefore I had a lot of "Nooooooo f**k i died again"-moments but i got better every time. But as this game is quite slow the free weekend ended way to fast & I'm willing to return to my Captain 'Duncan McCloud' and his crazy crew of cannibals. (you can't fight the HUNGER!)

I think when you accept that you're probably going to die, but that your knowledge will help the next captain it's easier to accept your losses.
Of course, when your captain is 40 hours old that philosophy goes completely out the window and you'll chomp your fingernails off with nerves with every single decision.

I think the setting and method of storytelling are unlike any other game I've played.
I did play the free weekend, and I was pretty confused, but interested. I didn't have enough time to play, so I didn't read much of the tutorial stuff and thus didn't really know how to improve my chances for survival. I did, however, find THE SUN. THE SUN. THE SUN.
Since captains seem to die rather frequently, I don't think I'll dwell on trivial matters like naming them. They are mere vessels for exploration.

Hey, thanks for the giveaway. Sunless Sea has been on my wishlist for a long time.

Having played Fallen London, I love getting to further explore the world they've created, and not have to be limited by actions and such. Played ~25 hours during the free weekend, which was pretty much my whole weekend :p
As for names...they'll all be truncat. All their lives shall inevitably be truncat-ed! Also, it's my steam name.

I'm giving away a copy of Sunless Sea!
I really love this game and I think the devs are pretty cool people, so I want this game to go to someone who will appreciate it and (hopefully) spread some positive feedback to others.
Obviously there is no way to guarantee that will happen, so the next best option I've thought of is this: to do a whitelist giveaway. In order to get on the whitelist, all you have to do is tell me the following:
At the very least it will stop bots from entering and maybe we'll get some good discussion about the game too.
Since the giveaway finishes on the 19th of February and I have a full-time job, I'll add people who comment up until 21:00 GMT on the 17th of February. Just to give myself enough time in case real life gets busy. If I've time I'll add anyone who comments afterwards but I guess it depends on how busy the thread gets.
Cast off into the Neath!
