Nekro keys didn't expire. The stupid developer voided all of them and then promptly took several months to replace people's keys that they paid good money for, all the while with little to no communication from their side and people wondering if they were just scammers or what. Will never buy anything from this developer again.
Oh, and Groupees didn't do shit about it. Their solution to dealing with it was just to tell people what they wanted to hear to keep them quiet, i.e. we are talking to the dev about it blah blah blah, but with no actual results whatsoever. In this respect it was like a politician making promises that they of course do not keep.

Games are for free as in free beer. Everyone can get them.
The "Play to win" part is, a game is going to have a free DLC at the end of the event for everyone that has the game on his steam account.
You get "points" by playing rounds and winning, that get added to the global pool, and that global pool defines what game has been played the most.

Play the one you enjoy the most, it doesn't really matter at the end, because whoever has the game that wins then they are going to get a free DLC even if they had not played the game at all during the event.
So, if you have the 3 games, play whatever you want, you are going to get a Free DLC regardless of who wins. :D Only for one game, remember that

Probably they didn't expect so many people to grab it via Stream without first visiting their site. This way everyone has to go see their event and such. Not saying I like it, but it does make sense that they would want everyone getting it free to go through them first.

Even if they don't sell them (and I'm not saying they will, but an email address, like all privacy-sensitive data, cannot be "unsold" and can fall in the wrong hands in case of a security breach), mail addresses are still useful for advertising, collecting marketing data and so on.
But I'll take you up on that offer, tin foil hats are cool :P
