Depends on what he prefers from hack'n'slash games. Of course the first game is also a must, if he he's into the story. There is no reason to pass on it unless you're solely in for the co-op experience. The first game is great. The second game is the same, just more of it and enjoyable in the company of friends.

I found it quite enjoyable. It is generic, but it does it well. The first game is small, compact. It was the developers' way of testing the waters. They expand a lot in the second game, though.
