Is it real ?
Well I haven't tried it, but i know it works because people make it work. Their subconscious had something to do with it and a mentalist can steer them to use the board, but it's really a sort of placebo effect. if you want it to work and you believe it can, but its fake anyhow xD

The trick is to hold your fingers very gently on the slideythingy. The more you focus on barely touching it, the less aware you'll be of the micromotions that you can't even control, that will guide the thingamajig to the letters you subconsciously assume will be next. Same mechanics as dowsing for instance, and pendulum work, where it's equally important to focus on not trying to control the doodad. The more you focus on "not moving" the more you'll move without realizing it's you that controls it. It's called the ideomotor phenomenom.
Ouija boards are a fun party game as a kid if you use this knowledge and some simple priming (repeating some keywords in conversation while setting things up so they are at the top of the mind of everyone involved) to get it to say fun things. Like when the board said "I am your father" to the siblings that grew up in a very religious household, and when they asked who it was it responded "satan". That was a lot of fun. Sadly nobody ever wanted to play with the ouija board again. :D
A fun way to play with this effect yourself is to take a string or thread and tie something heavy to the end, like a nut or metal washer or anything really, to make a pendulum. The important thing is that the weight is heavy enough to stretch the string/thread tight. The longer it is the better, but something you can hold over a table works fine if you don't want to do something you can stand up and hold over the floor. Now just hold it, and focus on holding your hand very still. Make no effort to control the motion of the pendulum. Instead just start looking at it, and then looking in the pattern you want it to move. Let your eyes make a circle around it and soon it will start to move in a circle in the direction you move your eyes. Switch directions and without any conscious movement the pendulum will slow, stop, and eventually switch directions. Look back and forth along any line crossing the pendulum and it will narrow it's circular motion until it swings along the line you look at.
This is something anyone can do, and if you focus enough you'll be perfectly sure you aren't moving your hand at all... and it may even look almost perfectly still to anyone watching. But you ARE moving it... with tiny tiny motions, pushing the pendulum into the motions you are "wanting". Again, fun party trick, and a simple way to convince people you can do magic tricks by making them hold the pendulum and then telling them which way it will move. In almost every case it will move as you tell them, even if they're sure they aren't moving...

Those who believe in it, will experience it.
Over the years, many people die for unknown and known reasons, its fate, it is meant to happen either way, any second, any minute, any hour or any day and we as humans have to be prepared.
It isn't scary, but for those that do go and can't let go, they enter the nether or limbo just lost, so it is a form of trying to establish some form of communication, just to assure them that everything is ok but there is another side which nobody wants to come into contact with.
So that's the only way to explain it.
And it isn't for playing games either so perhaps you may want to ask someone for their expertise.
Even if you do, close the conversation, don't freak out and walk away from it.
