I've never paid attention to game ratings and I think that they are not enforced by law in here. Also the ratings are a fucked up system of measurement. I recommend you watch the documentary Not Yet Rated.

+1 Same game. I still have my copy of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. 1996, so I was 14 at the time.

I was playing that game at 7 years old. XD

I think that I still have the collection version that came with Soul Reaver and Fighting Force. Either I have it or my brother took it.

Well... Idk about other countries but in Poland even 10yo kid can buy GTA legally, and if vendor would try to forbid him, he could actually call the police and force him to, since PEGI or ESRB don't have any legal power here. Anway, happy b-day mate !

So many bad-ass people buying games before they were allowed to in this thread.

I was one of them too.

To be fair, buying games was easier for 80s kids cause no one really cared if you were 7 or 18 when buying M-rated games, apart from the kids mum.

My dad gave me BF Vietman(pirate copy but who cares?) when I was 7(few days after the release), 9 years before the recommended age.
Never stopped since.

So many bad-ass distribution platforms that sell these games to children.

If you care for ratings you'd better pick your children's eyes out with the crap they're able to see on tv and who knows where else. I feel that ratings should be considered as guidelines and should not be imposed as a limit. You learn nothing by pulling the wool over someone's eyes.

As far as I know even a 10 year old can buy M-rated game. It's only works as an indicator to the parents I quess.

I bought Just Cause for 4 dollars on steam in like 2009 or 2010 or something, otherwise most of my games were purchased by others either as birthday/christmas gifts or in leu of payment for some sort of chore (IE helping pull up carpet in a house, or cleaning a stable ect.)

You got ripped off, I got it for 27 cents.

shrug there was a 3-4 year difference since y'know the 27 cent deal only happened recently. Still i'd feel worse if i bought it at launch for probably 40 or 60 bucks =p

The good thing about being a kid is that your parents buy you everything, so the legality of buying it yourself does not even factor in.

My parents made me return this Tom Clancy Bundle I bought in Target with my bday money and told me I had no right to use my money without first asking them about it. This occured about half a decade ago...=.=

you seriously think parents cant order their kids around, were you raised by wolves or something thats the essence of parenting, do as i say or ill punish you is pretty much all it is

Permalink

I'm not saying that's not the way it is. I'm just saying that it's illegal for anyone to steal someone else's money. Controlling a child's money = deciding how to use the money. If you have control over someone else's money, you've taken their money.

I'm talking about law, not about how children should be raised.

Probably Metro 2033 from the THQ Bundle, as I didn't get into PC gaming until last year, and before that I played my uncle's Sega Dreamcast and SNES (weee Virtua Tennis and Super Mario World!), so I didn't buy any games.

When I was 17 I pirated everything. Simply no money to spend. Now I have exactly the opposite problem. I buy too much and then have problem playing it. Like now there are about 5 or so games in my steam library I need to finish and at least 15+ I didn't get to play yet. I would need a period of one, maybe two years of no games coming out so I can play everything. But that probably wouldn't work, since I would buy something older, that is on sale :D

No idea, it's been so long and I probably didn't even know it was an 18+ game when I bought the 1st one, which I most likely got younger than that.

I'm pretty sure ESRB/Pegi only showed up in the late 90's so there are probably a bunch that qualify now, but have never been rated (at least this is the case for me.)

I'd guess if you were at least 5 or 6 years old in 2000 you saw one or two of these at least.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Add 10 years to that. I think Pegi evolved downwards with the age requirements with games and movies.
For example the The Silence of the Lambs movie was 18+ while Hannibal (sequel) which was more violent from memory was 12 / 14+. Same deal for many games.

huh, well I looked up ESRB and that was founded in 1994 and put into wide use on games by the late 90s so I was at least half correct! :D

Never cared about ratings. Nobody around here does. Played GTA 2 back in 1999, when I was 7, and back then didn't even know there's such a thing as a game rating. And as said, nor did I care
