Tell me what kind of games and I can help you more.
Edit: Play TF2 or Terraria with friends.

Differs per person, I'll just tell you that you'll need to specify your tastes right now, because otherwise people will just keep spewing the same popular stuff

And since when did Skyrim fit the criteria of 'multiplayer game'?
(I know you didn't say Skyrim was multiplayer, just it shouldn't really be in the list given OP asked for mp games rather than 'most played games'

Yeah but it's a simple matter to highlight the line with Skyrim on and click 'delete'.

For what it's worth, There IS work being done to make a multiplayer mod for skyrim. Though it looks terrible right now.

The trine series was a lot of fun.
Magicka is fun, but try the demo first, the controls are odd and my fiancee got fed up with them before we finished the game.
Team fortress 2 is pretty good.
Don't Starve is supposed to get some multiplayer 'elements' sometime in its future development and it's a heck of a lot of fun right now.
Portal 2 had a really fun co-op mode.
I suppose it depends on what you mean when you say "best multiplayer games" When I think multiplayer I think of 2-player co-op games more than the 8-16+ online arena games. I suppose if you're talking more than two or three local friends there's a handful of mmo's on steam that are good, FFXI, Realm of the mad god, Spiral Knights (those last two are free, but lose some of their steam after a week or so of playing)

Arma II(not DayZ), is pretty fun when you play multiplayer. It has coop campaigns, scenarios, and the redundant skirmish matches. I don't see a lot of people playing this game, so it's pretty underrated. Give it a try.
Killing Floor, not really an underrated game, is also a lot of fun. When I first got the game, I played for at least 11 hours the first day. It's really fun, a bit repetiive, but that's why you join different servers.
