All these games except Dungeon Siege III were given in one Humble Bundle. They are great games, especially the last remnant but sadly I have them all :/

It's not all without merit. Square Enix is recycling games they've been bundling for years and trying to pass it off as new and exciting.

Did I get a good value for my $10? Sure, these ol' gems are worth it.
Will the next "surprise" from Square Enix make me feel excitement? Nope.
Am I insulted by how little they value customers who buy direct? Absolutely.

This one hit the sweet spot back in 2015...

Indeed, not every gamble can be a jackpot. At the same time, Square Enix took a gamble with their customers' faith, and it's not unhealthy that folks want to let them know they're pressing their luck.

And yet, I always get games I don't own in the Humble Monthly, G2A Monthly, Groupees grab bags, etc., which are all surprise packages. Yes, this is great value for people new to Steam, or Square Enix. That seems like a very small percentage of their target market, and for the rest of us it ranges from ok to disappointing.

I'm not upset, but I won't be buying any more of these.

And yet, I always get games I don't own in the Humble Monthly, G2A Monthly

Those also draw from a much much larger pool of games that are out there, and the Humble Monthly at least is highly curated with the specific intention of delivering unbundled games. Square Enix on the other hand doesn't have enough games in their catalog to do more than maybe 1 bundle a year without significant repeats.

Sure, Square Enix has a limited set of games to choose from, but yet they never include half of their catalog - the most popular ones, of course. Also, the the dollar value for Humble Monthly, given the fact that they are curated unbundled games, is much better.

Like I said, I'm not really upset with the purchase, as I suspected it wouldn't be anything exciting and I can still gift some good games to others, and I think for some people it was a great deal. For those of us that buy a lot of bundles though, there's nothing new here, and for the price it's quite disappointing compared to other options.

unbundled games.

Nope, they made it clear since the start that repeats from their other bundles can and will happen ; but they mostly try their best with quality. (WTF was that RAM?)

I know they said that but the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of the games are new-to-bundle. It seems to me that that is part of their intent when putting them together, even if they can't promise it. If it were a law, it would be the difference between how it is written and how it is actually applied in practice.

Yes, I also have the similar feeling that they used their phrasing as a possible safety net for the future, and they really try to push new games, with more or less success. (The recent horror game popped into my mind that turned out to be terrible)

I assume you mean Husk. Yeah, it had no business being in a Monthly Bundle. So far I would call it an isolated incident as far as game quality goes. What isn't though is the fact that games from them are being re-bundled so soon thereafter and it has been doing a disservice to subscribers and is a real problem imo.

Yap, that one!
To be honest I don't know if the rebundling thing even should be addressed. A brand new 60$ AAA game will get 30% (~18-20$) discount in 2-3 months after release, usually going down 50% (30$) in less than half a year. It's a norm in the industry, now a 12$ bundle's one game out of the 6 technically worth 2$....there isn't much to lose on it, usually not even if we value the early unlock 10$ if someone buys the bundle for it. It's the same early-adapter extra cost that's on almost every service or new item.
Also an interesting side of the stuff - something being in the monthly "only" 2-3 months ago means 60-90 day passed, that could have been used to play and likely finish the game. It's just really not a norm what hoarding goes on Steamgifts (including myself as well, I have so many of the better games that I could choke on it), and the forums really do feel like an echo chamber. People with 5-6-7k libraries buying bundles just to have one extra game they don't own, people not even playing majority of their wins (not to mention purchases) yet cussing that there is no new humblebundle on Tuesdays. As SG needs "leechers" to enter for giveaways and them to give CV, the industry also needs this vacuum-attitude, but I really think that the site's and our opinion is seriously biased about re-bundles.

I hate hypocrites like you. So much that I blacklisted you. They clearly lied with the mention of "random" games of over "80$ value", only to completely fuck americans with low value rebundles, and tricked europeans into buying Just Cause 3 at 12€ but at least it's discounted.

So now it's Square Enix's fault that you already have the games. What a time to be alive. Maybe don't buy bundles and packs with mystery games if you only want not owned stuff, and don't care about quality? The indiegala monday bundles would fit your taste for quality.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There is no way it can be called a "great" bundle. If you already have 1 of the games then you are about breaking even. If you already have 2 games then it's a loss. It's not about having all 5 games. It's about the value of the games that were included. You are better off buying the games individually. All of this is completely ignoring the fact that most, if not all, of these games have been bundled before.

Hitman Absolution: Elite Edition - Cheapest price $4
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light - Cheapest price $1.91
The Last Remnant - Cheapest price $2.49
Murdered: Soul Suspect - Cheapest price $2.99
Dungeon Siege III - Cheapest price $2.80

That's $14.19 based on the cheapest prices and ignoring the bundle status. Any one of the Humble monthly bundles offers better value, even their worst ones. Of course, it's easy to say "don't buy surprise packages". People buy them based on experiences from previous bundles from the same company. This bundle is far worse than all of those that SE has dished up before. Is it better than the GMG loot box, definitely, but to call it a great bundle is fudging the waters. It's not, it's not even a good bundle. It's maybe an ok bundle if you don't own any of the games. If you own 1 or more than it's poor.

Are you high 3 of these games were in the square Enix bundle 3 , 2 of which was 1$ tier one on the 9$ , and that's not alll you get , it was not only cheaper but it's also way better than this Shitty bundle

Permalink

Not everyone got that bundle 16 months ago? If you would stop thinking like a collector and start thinking like a gamer then the price of the games (2$ each) and the quality and high quality content they can give it makes this into a very worthwhile bundle. Games won't get worse just because you own them.

I replied to the email stating that the download page said it was refundable and they were contradicting themselves

“Note: As soon as you unlock the activation key, you lose your right for a refund. Please be sure to download and install your products prior to getting your key.”

I hoped for the first two tries, then I already had most of the wanted games, and so far it was completely accurate that they haven't bundle the older FF games. They could do it, but based on all the previous SqEnix packs and bundles - not a single FF game in bundles, and the packs had two newer but weaker ones, and the MMO 14th. After that I just give up trying, waiting sales for FF and LiS :)

It recently had a 5€ deal directly on Steam (and as far as I know that's the usual discount currently) and while that might seem like a lot of money for us Bundle crowd it's definitely worth it's money from what I can tell so far (at the end of episode 4 right now). Also it's such a nice game that for me personally the ability to write a review that counts also factors in a tiny bit into the equation.

Refunded reviews often say more about a game than the reviews by the idiots who didn't refund.
Family shared reviews can be the developer's fifty fake accounts, or can be I played that game but never would I want that junk on my account.
Key activations can be free fake review keys, or amateurish reviewers, or professional reviewers, or bundle buyers, or just human beings who legitimately bought the game.

The source of a game can never indicate the legitimacy of a review. The core point is that Valve is too <insert synonym of unwilling> to police their user reviews at a minimum standard, paying for actual man-hours of work. It's really not that hard for admins to see if the same IP posted five reviews in an hour, yet it happens.
Hell, I can still upvote my own reviews after the system has been live for XYZ years, or use throwaway accounts to do it for me.

I kind of see your point but if you don't own a game I'm not sure you're entitled to share you opinion about it over Steam. Nothing can keep you from sharing your opinion about it and warning the people in your surrounding but I'm undecided if you have a right to do it over Steam.

Edit: Personally when I read reviews I want opinions of people who actually play the game and not sombody who thinks he can run GTA V on his Texas Instruments TI-30 and then reviews it negatively after refunding because he can't.

Family shared reviews can be the developer's fifty fake accounts, or can be I played that game but never would I want that junk on my account.

I was not aware that those exist and in my opinion the fact that they do is a major fuckup from Valve.

In my opinion the thing about a team of humans moderating Steam reviews is never going to happen and I actually find the suggestion a little naiv considering the amount of reviews on Steam.

What if I don't own a game but played through the entirety? How is my review less qualified than that of somebody who spent $50 on it but only played 2h? Is the $50 buyer more "invested" in the game? (Stockholm Syndrome :p)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It isn't less qualified (although it might be hard to tell for others if the review is legit if you don't have reasonable playtime) but you are still using Steams infrastructure to do something that has no benefit for Steam. If they feel really, really nice they might allow it if they want to but in no way is it something you are entitled to in my opinion.

Or should I in your opinion be allowed to write a Steam review for let's say Assassins Creed 1 when I own the game on uPlay ?

Different people have different degrees of magick innate reviewing skill.
The opinion of somebody who didn't play a game can be much closer to the truth than that of somebody else who did.

(Who defines 'honest'? The verified Amazon reviews are typically™ 'paid reviews' where the reviewers get a free promo item in exchange for a very friendly review, much like free Steam keys lead to nice reviews.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't use Amazon so I have no idea how the review situation there is. However just because Amazon allows it doesn't mean Steam has to. If I don't like it I can be vocal about it and try to change things by sending in suggestions or if I dislike it that much I can stop using Steam or boycott them by only buying from 3rd party sellers. Those are my decisons.
However how they want to run their business is their decision.

  • I was hoping for anything from the Final Fantasy franchise, JC3, or Sleeping Dogs, and was kind of bummed that none of those made it (though I wasn't really expecting Sleeping Dogs since it had already been boxed by Square in the past). Honestly, I wasn't all that bummed that the box didn't have any of the aforementioned titles, mainly because I think half the fun of owning game keys is trying to trade them away for games you do have interest in. The part that kinda ticked me off was that if you go by secondary market prices, the box as a whole just barely breaks $10 in effective trade-value (since most, if not all, of the titles have been bundled previously), so from a trading perspective, I don't really feel like I broke even tbh.
  • The analogy that comes to mind is the comparison between having $10 in cash that you can spend on whatever you want, vs. using that $10 and buying a gift card of equal value. I don't blame anyone but myself for this one though, and I guess the important thing here is that I've learned my lesson not to ever buy a blind video game 'surprise box'

Only Hitman Absolution actually has the DLCs.

I almost got this... I'm actually really glad I didn't though because the main reason I'm interested in them is they normally have 1 Final Fantasy game. On top of it not including an FF game I already own The Last Remnant and Murdered: Soul Suspect. The 3 other games are ok, but they aren't really worth 10 bucks to me. I guess to some the term would be "I dodged a bullet" maybe?

The Last Remnant and Murdered Soul Suspect were both in tier1 ($1) in last humble bundle SE, so even if you didn't you could easily trade for them. Other games were bundled as well or heavily discounted (or, as in case of Dungeon Siege 3, it is simply bad compared to 1 and 2)... so, you definitely dodged a bullet.

I guess SE doesn't care if they lie to their customers. The total retail value of the products in their store is $79.95. They made the claim: "featuring over $80 worth of exciting titles".

Oh dang, I didn't even realize that since Murdered Soul Suspect is $30 on the Steam Store, for reasons unknown (via: http://store.steampowered.com/app/233290/ ), but either way, even if it somewhat feels like grasping at straws, you really have to stretch things to make their "Worth over $80.00" claim true, which is something you should never have to do for a big publisher

@Nikolaj → Murdered Soul Suspect is $19.99 from Square's online store -- it's only being sold for $29.99 through Steam's store

Hmm, weird that there's a pretty major price discrepancy between the EU Square store, and the NA Square store:

  • €29.99 for Murdered from EU shop here
  • $19.99 for Murdered from NA shop here

From a professional standpoint, if the listed price in the NA shop is a typo, mis-listing the price for any kind of merchandise is a very very bad mistake on Square's part

According to this, the "typo" has been there ever since the end of 2014 ;)

And it's their own store for god's sake, not some (shady) third party site.

Yeah. I can. It doesn't matter if it is 29.99 on steam store. THEIR store, where this bundle was for sale, lists it for $19.99. Don't get so militant and condescending over this issue. I agreed with most of your comments about refunding, but the store bears some responsibility as well for attempting to mislead customers and then they should be shocked that they want a refund? Yeah no. They are both to blame.

@MrWubblestein - No worries mate, we were agreeing with you → We were just trying to break things down to take a look at Square's claim from different angles -- I'm in full agreement that the "Over $80 in value" claim was shady at best, and completely incorrect at worst
(P.S. my comment that you were replying to, was in response to Nikolaj's comment)

I have to agree with your point there, although I will say that it could also be a double-edged sword. In such a case there is the possibility of there being a bullshit price on some game which could make the value appear more than what it really is. Occasionally there are significant inconsistencies that make you scratch your head. This one isn't huge, but it's still notable.

edit: Why the discrepancy in pricing between Steam and their own site is beyond me. It couldn't be to offset Valve's commission on the sale, otherwise all of their games should be priced higher on Steam, which is not at all the case.

Oh it's a head scratcher alright. Every other store lists it for 29.99, so is it a deliberate attempt to undercut those other sales (and avoid paying commission) or have they not spotted a price error for the last 2 years? :D

The issue is this. There could be one site out there selling Murdered for $150, does that mean that they can say the bundle is worth over $200? Of course not, it's their store that counts. Not steam, not GMG, just their store.

I have told this thing to square-enix Support, and they reply me so quickly but didn't mention anything about price issue, just said: "Please note: All orders on the Square Enix Spring Surprise Box 2017 are FINAL and refunds or exchanges are not possible with this order. " And I didn't request them to refund as a only way to make up but take seriously to this issue.
