Well, I don't expect anyone to comment on my GAs, neither do I comment, unless I have something to say. And, no, spamming "thanks" in GAs is not significative, in my opinion, if you do it mechanically everytime.

And here's your "experienced" ungrateful member: http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/TnpEV/tomar-no-cu-steamgifts

I rarely comment when entering a giveaway, tbh I can't be too bothered to comment on every giveaway when I enter dozens. I do always comment if I happen to win one, which may seem obvious but none of my giveaways have ever received such a comment.

writing a comment takes few seconds... writing dozen of comments? what is it? 1-2 minutes? so you say you cannot spare 10 seconds for a person who pays his own hard earned cash for your chance to get a free game? awesome... -.-

10 secs? for every 1,000 entries that's 3 hours

I personally don't mind as long as the person who wins displays gratitude, which rarely happens. I don't make giveaways for recognition, I don't need people thanking me for it, since most also do giveaways themselves it's more of an exchange of gifts. I assume that a person who enters a giveaway is grateful for it, since the opposite is absurd. So no, I don't see any problem in not writing thanks for each and every single giveaway, for me an entrance is a "thank you" just by itself.

I had a few winners that I never heard anything from (marked received without a word). Not when entering and not after receiving game. All of them came from public GAs or forum (private) GAs, people are usually nice in small groups and whitelist GAs.
But I also had a few who came back to me later to tell me they had fun with the game they won. Makes me happy to know it really gave someone a moment of fun, lightens the weight of the a*sholes I was talking about :)

Happened to me a lot of times as well. I don't even expect the participants to write "thanks" (I'd rather they don't, anyway) but I definitely do appreciate a "thank you" after they have received the game.. oh well...

I wouldn't constitute people saying thanks when entering a giveaway ungrateful. Especially if you use the forums regularly, it's actually kind of annoying having the inbox spam, I personally prefer people to say nothing. The winner can send me their thanks if they wish, but if a giveaway has ~500 entries, I don't expect every single person who only has a 0.2% chance to win to thank me.

well, you can always tell in the description "Please don't poist thanks, I'm a forum regular and I don't wan't unneccessary spam" - problem solved :>

More than half of the people who post generic "thanks" messages are automated from scripts when they enter the giveaway without even opening the page, most of them don't even know the giveaway has a description. I've done it a few times and it really didn't make much of a difference, it just made other people start asking me why I don't want people to say thanks.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

exactly - so when you put such a description legit users will not post "thanks :>", people who use bots or scripts and ones who don't read description will post it and you can then blacklist them :D:

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ich. In the long run it sort of would, but I'm also against using the blacklist for such minor offences. I really shouldn't be because those scripts are annoying as hell, but some of them actually think they're being grateful for some god forsaken reason. There's nothing commendable about automated thanks messages, but bless their cotton socks, they're trying. Catch 22 I guess.

well, I guess it depends on person to person basis ;) I personally have no mercy if someone cannot be bothered to even read GA description. Especially as these may contain important info, like "This game will not activate in Germany" (for anything Germany-censored), or "Enter this bundle only if you have 50% or less games from it" etc. People don't read such a descriptions, end up winning games, Creator has to reroll, wasting his time, support's time and all this because entrant couldn't be bothered with spending 5 seconds to read GA description.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well to be fair it's against the rules to give away games that have restrictions like Germany activation. If the winner is from Germany than it's entirely the giveaway creator's fault for not following the rules and they will get a not-received. I know it sucks but that's the rules according to support. That said, I've given away a few games like that before I understood the rules and I'm glad I got lucky with my winners. I'm very cautious now.

On topic, It definitely bothers me that some people don't read the description, but I'll never have rules on commenting. I do get sad about how many people don't thank when they win. We actually had that discussion recently in a group. I surprised that common courtesy is so lost these days.

Permalink

Actually Germany is exclusion of this rule - because even ROW (aka not restricted) games cannot be activated in Germany because of their censorship laws. As long as your gift/key you're giving away is ROW (not restricted) it's up to German users not to enter this GA.

Permalink

Interesting, I didn't know that - Thanks. Well I think my previous giveaways included some other countries like Japan.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

General rule is: If a GA is ROW (rest of the world, region free) but it cannot be activated in X country due to it's law it's not your problem. If your GA copy has restrictions like "can be activated only in XYZ" or "cannot be activated in XYZ" because of publisher restrictions - it's your problem and you should restrict it to areas avaiable.

yeah, know the pain. I've made way over 200 private GAs most of which were forum puzzles (from times when I was very active into puzzle making) or event GAs, as my puzzles tended to be hard and often ending with less than 10 entries I'd constantly got accused of making these GAs and sharing them with friends just to boost my CV...

I say only thanks you if I win a giveaway or when I have something to say (per request or because I want to answer a question or for another reason)..

Besides, being myself a giver, I hate being spammed with a ton of thank you. So, I don't do that to others. Doesn't mean I'm not grateful for the giveaway. Doesn't mean that I'm not respectful. And when I win and someone delivers, guess what? Whitelisted!

True, I don't say "dont post thank you" because people will do it regardless. Besides, I don't blacklist for that. I'm letting them do it because hey, it's their right to do it,

I largerly prefer when someone say thanks in a creative manner or after they won a giveaway. I always smile at that. I really smile at that. If they don't, whether by mail after sending the link, on steam after chatting with them or here on SG, I don't care.

Had to spend my own $$$ to buy "10 live toads" to get rid of the ladybugs and then illegally import a raccoon to get me rid of the slippery toads. Me and the raccoon are now best bros though so I guess I won in the end.

Khazadson said ".. anime avatar.." then you said " .. an avatar including a japanese style drawing.." --> according to you, anime drawings = Japanese style in drawing.
And what I meant by "culture" is to mock how many anime lovers view anime as a true picture of Japan and its culture.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I understand your INTERPRETATION of my words and I agree that its pretty ignorant to picture a whole culture with just one aspect, anime in this case. It just takes a few books and documentary to get a more real approach to the Japanese culture.
I didn't meant that. Now lets take a look of what happens when you Google "japanese style drawing" According to some sources you can get from that search; there are quite a few japanese styles. Now, when you go deep into that search, you can also notice that those styles are used when drawing manga/anime.
I hope that clarifies my intentions when I said japanese style drawing". My words sure need a rephrase if I need to explain all of this...

Heh, well besides the fact I was joking (that's what the :P means after all) my avatar is from a webcomic that takes its inspiration from history, the fantastic Hark, a Vagrant! as drawn by the witty and talented Kate Beaton. I strongly urge you to check it out. I tend to find that most people who appreciate it have much in common with me.

Also I agree with the other person who replied to you:Anime and Japanese style drawings are vastly different to me.If I think of the latter I picture the classic woodblock prints from the early Edo-period, if anything:).

I've had an experience with someone complaining about my level 1 puzzle GA, so I linked them a 4c DLC they could give away (quick, you've only got 4 days!!) If anything it turned about to be a bit of fun because they didn't get angry or annoyed, they just kinda explained the situation they were in. Whenever I've had someone initially appear hostile (like that) they've always backed away as soon as they could (as I like to do too), which makes you feel silly for getting a bit worked up over nothing. I think some also get worried about being blacklisted for such a small grievance (I get like that too sometimes)

Personally in public giveaways I have posted things such as "No replies please". On the other hand,it definitely irritates me when I give games (especially non-bundle stuff)to a group, my whitelist, or a combination thereof, and people clearly didn't even take the time to read the description because usually I ask them to post something instead of a generic thanks.Still, a generic thanks in those situations is better than nothing.

It's really hard to care about giving games away once people stop seeming grateful.

Permalink

Personally I never say any kind of thanks when just entering giveaway - it would just be spam. Unless your game is something ultra rare I dont feel any more gratitude to you then to any other active (=creating some giveaways) member of steamgifts. For the same reason I prefer people not to say thanks in my giveaways, but I wont go so far as to blacklist them for doing so.
On the other hand if I win your giveaway you will receive my thanks, either as comment or in chat/email depending on the way the game will be delivered. At this point I received something specifically from you, so my gratitude is "targeted".

I try to comment in every giveaway I enter. Sometimes it's just a generic variation on "Thanks!", sometimes I'll add a bit more. (Depends on my mood, how much I want the game, if the giveaway creator has asked a specific question in the description, and how much in a hurry I'm in. I do skip on the comments from time to time, mostly on the huge giveaways (50+ keys) not to add to much to the inbox spam, or on the obvious regifts (mostly from these previously mentioned GAs). If I win something, I make sure to thank the gifter for his gift. Either directly on Steam or on the giveaway page.

I don't expect everyone who enter my giveaways to thank me. There are those who see this as spam so they definitely won't be commenting. You also get a better comment/entries ratio in private & group giveaways because the people joining are more involved in the community side of SG. Most of my winners have thanked me, but I don't take offense if they don't. (Some people aren't even aware that you can go back to the giveaway page to thank the gifter, so hen they get an automated key, they just mark it as received and move on.) I will only blacklist those who don't add the game to their libraries and/or try to regift them. So far I've only noticed one of my winners trying to trade his game away.

I personally don't comment thanks on every giveaway I enter because i feel it spams the giveaway creator. But if theres a special question or something in the description I do that. I think that would be a normal response. Personally I don't like replying to the emails either. I think commenting on the GA is fine.

I'm going to ask here a question, because I don't want to start a new thread and it's maybe a little bit on topic.

What do you guys do when you send the key to the winner and he claims that the key is a duplicate or it's not possible to active it in his country, even if it's ROW? Getting an extra key from seller is impossible without any proof and can I really trust some guy from the internet and the screenshot he can easily manipulate? The games weren't from G2A, Kinguin or other keyshop with unkown key origins, but from shops I've bought hundreds of games for myself and never had any problems.

I don't want to accuse anyone, I'm just curious about all this situation.

First of all it depends on who claims it ;) If it's low level, no GAs created, even worse - non activation history - I will act differently than if it's well known contributor, person I know from SG community or group friend. Anyway - of you bought a key from a legit store good thing to do in such a case is to request new key and revoke of the old key - I know Humble does it as well as Indie Gala (up to 60 days).

If you're just buying a key it's also good idea to make screenshots with timestamp - it can help you with support.

Sadly as Steam has no ways to check key history in such a cases it's usually word against word and it's Support to judge who is right. But of for example they will see that he claimed that key was region locked but it's in fact ROW (all you have to do is to try to activate used key on account who already has a game) thjey will permabann his ass for attempted smcam. But again - you have to screencap your conversation with him to prove he wanted another key and claimed this one to be region locked).
