Or do you think they're just a huge gimmick?

As for myself, I do use them. Mostly Razer. Now, thinking of getting the Steelseries APEX keyboard. I've invested quite a lot actually.

No, they did not make me a better gamer, but they did improve my gaming experience. (And I get to rub it in my friends's faces that I can afford such luxuries. :P)

Your thoughts?

I use a Logitech G700 mouse because it is great, not because it is a gaming mouse - I have the extra buttons assigned to the likes of copy, paste, close, back, forward etc. My keyboard is a CM Storm Trigger because I wanted a keyboard with cherry red switches (because they feel great), and backlighting (because I use the computer in the dark). I spend a lot of time at my computer so having top notch gear makes sense to me, and if the best stuff is labelled "gaming" then I get gaming gear.

I'm using R.A.T. 7 and it's the best mouse in a freaking world! I cannot imagine playing with anything else nowadays :> I have a big hands, so most of gaming mouses felt too small and to light for me - this one I could easily customize to fit my hand perfectly and make it nice and heavy :>

As for other stuff:

keyboard I will be getting mechanical one this xmas, mainly because of anti-ghosting. Plus because my current KB sucks ;p

Controller - I use HAMA Air Grip. It's not the best thing in the world, but I prefer KB/M anyway. And as my hands are big it feels better than your standard small controllers. And thanks to these air pillows my hands doesn't hurt even after really long playsessions :>

HeadSet - SteelSeries Syberia v2 because they look awesome, plus as our gaming computer is in our bedroom I do not necessary want to wake up my fiancee why playing over-night ;p Nowadays i don't use mic too much, but when I was still playing MMOs - it also provided nice voice quality :>

MousePad - SteelSeries QCK Diablo3 Monk This one I actually won :> Before was just using cheap mousepads. Didn't think it would be making a huge difference, but having a big mousepad with a good grip may not improve your gaming results, but sure as hell improve your comfort :>

And I have some budget Mouse Bungee to manage my mouse cord :>

i go with what's the most comfortable for me, and it's my good ol' very basic logitech mouse.
i'm performing so much better in first person games, since i scrapped my other flashy, heavy, wireless logitech mouse with 1.000.000 buttons on it.
