No anti-aliasing at all

8x anti-aliasing

I can't decide if I should use anti aliasing, or not at all, or use it but scale down the effect.(I realise the anti-aliasing has blended the left eye of each character sprite, so just ignore that, it can easily be rectified)

Just offer both in the graphic settings =) (and having the no AA by default). The text is more readable with the no AA one.

Wait, is it for a game? It looks like it...

I think that could be the best option, with maybe 4x and 2x as well as intervels, and yes it is for a game.

I like the anti-aliasing one slightly better, non anti-aliasing seems to be better with the gradient layers

What about if I put a 4x anti aliasing setting, which kept the detail from the original and the 'smoothness' from the 8x?

I hate Aliasing. Unless you are aiming at an absolute-retro style, I would always recommend the AA.

BTW: Do you need those borderlines? I wouldn't use them on every image. Especially green grass and the tree don't need that strong borders when you use AA.

The text isn't final, that would be normal without any anti-aliasing in the final product, I just couldn't be asked to put new text in

Well it depends on the style you're looking to achieve, in any case you can just add it as an option.

Personally i like both.

However if you do choose to go with AA, you'd have to fix the text, cant be understood like that D:

Depends on what you want the feel of the game to be. Retro, no anti-aliasing. Functional and smooth, anti-aliasing.

With a bit of tweaking, I think the AA one would have a nice and unique-ish feeling and maybe some non-old-school kiddos will like the game style too. The AA one would need to have some details added after AA, like the eyes and fix some corner borders (like on the flags) or even make the borders less obvious.
But if you can and have the time, an option to change that in-game would be the best option.

Imo the AA looks terribly like just another flash game. The 8-bit style is a little less chliché.

Anyways @Voho: Did you try arranging the images? Would be better to judge, if you just set up a full scene.

Well, based on the above comparison, I'd say go for 8x AA, definitely.

The first images you posted make no AA look better, though.
