I love sci-fi movies a lot, aside from sports(motivational) movie.
My favorites are 2001: Space Odyssey, Pi, Aliens, Moon, Stalker, Matrix Series, Solaris, Ex Machina, Gattaca, Contact, Sunshine and K:PAX.
Don't recommend me superhero movies cause they obviously falls under sci-fi. genre.
I want something pure sci-fi like one of my friend recommended Primer. Not as complex as that but something understandable.
As you can see through my favorites it dates from 1960's till now.. but they might be mainstream, so I might miss some.
Oh plz god dont say interstellar. Its not that good sci-fi as regards to other, but I like that song. I like other song too Brain Damage, I guess facebook doesn't like this name (funny story I'll post it on comment)
EDIT : I forgot about Brazil
And for Anime Steins;Gate

Thanks to MaxThunder for the sponsored GA

EDIT 20th May 17: As some members have asked to create a public list. I have created a list on IMDB which consists all the movies recommended by the community.

Note: The list contains Feature Films, TV series & movies, Anime & series. This list might contains some movies that can't considered as sci-fi movies. This is just a list of recommended movies, you might have to filter out which movie might fit for you. I haven't filtered out any recommendations from members on the list, but I might have missed some of them because I couldn't find its link.

I've not been watching a lot of films in the past few years, so my recommendations will be fairly obvious, I'm afraid. Nolan's Inception and Interstellar; and Edge of Tomorrow. The latter isn't exactly Sci-Fi, in a way it's some sort of Groundhog Day in a Sci-Fi setting, but I kind of enjoyed it, and it also ties back into gaming (respawning/learning).

Oh plz god dont say interstellar.

:p

And Edge of Tomorrow is most definitely scifi! And surprisingly great for a blockbuster!

Have you watched Groundhog Day? I don't think that qualifies as Sci-Fi, the reincarnation mechanic is not even explained (thankfully), and what Edge of Tomorrow manages is technobabble. Blood of an Alpha, babble babble? get real.

I would say it's more of a Bildugsroman - you've got this perfectly formed, smug, lying, dick get stuck with himself being a dick, and a showstopper, for how long it takes for him to grow into a non-dick adult person.

You could basically take the EoT story and rewrite it as fantasy or surreal (think Durrenmatt or something)

PS: concerning Interstellar, I had missed the mention, but then again, you included ultra-derivative stuff like The Matrix or Moon so, basically, anything goes :P In that vein, I could as well recommend stuff like Source Code, and not even feel guilty.

I mean, there's aliens and spaceships and mech suits, how is that not scifi? I think you're thinking hard scifi. Regular scifi hasn't been about being scientifically accurate since like the 70's

I agree with Scarwiz on scifi thing.
BTW there's another EoT on the making.
I liked Moon a lot. and I feel you about Source Code, its a love-it/hate-it kind of movie. I loved that movie.

But for the love of all that is Earthbound....NEVER watch the sequels.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series and specials. You said you liked the Matrix, well this anime was its inspiration.

Psycho-Pass is an intense psychological thriller/crime drama set in a dystopian(?) future. 2nd season is optional.

Cowboy Bebop? Has anyone not seen this?

Babylon 5 still holds up today, although the standard resolution is ugly.

Star Trek: The Next Generation was pretty good, but the story arcs in Deep Space Nine were epic (reminded me of Babylon 5). About half the Star Trek movies are good.

Galaxy Quest counts as a Star Trek movie I guess.

Doctor Who is the purest of sci-fi shows. I'd recommend starting at the 2005 reboot and only watching older seasons after catching up (6th doctor is amazing).

Someone already mentioned Firefly & Serenity, a tragically short but beautifully crafted story.

Enemy Mine (you know that one episode of star trek that deals with bigotry?)

Flight of the Navigator (okay for kids)

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Star Wars trilogy

Contact had glaring flaws, but overall I liked it.

Rick and Morty

The Fifth Element

Total Recall (1990)

Oh great! Hope you enjoy them,

I'm currently re-watching a terrible 90s sci-fi called Time Trax. It has this MacGyver-time-cop with KITT-Cortana as a side-kick. So B-grade, but still fun.

Make sure you catch the Christmas specials for each season of Who, they're pretty important sometimes, and come between seasons.

Each of these sci-fi films I would give a 9/10 or 10/10:

  • Under The Skin (2013)
  • Communion (1989)
  • Zardoz (1974)
  • STALKER (1979)
  • Dune (1984)
  • Blade Runner (1982)
  • The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976)

So many great suggestions already. Haven't seen Outlander mentioned yet but it's kinda mediocre. I still enjoyed it. Basically it's about a space mercenary that crashlands onto Earth and joins a viking village.

Sorry, I got so lost in replying the comments, I forgot to personally thank you. I never thought there would be such a response. I nearly had given up. I was going to bed, and checked if one of my GA winner was online... I mistakenly clicked the message icon instead og GA created icon and saw your comment.
I added the GA link on the thread but forgot about you. Sry. My mind isn't working well. It's almost been 19 hrs that I haven't slept plus because of the drinks I have had. Damn I question my self how could I become a programmer with this lousy typing. Man, I should get back to that Epistory game.
This thread started with how I wanted a good movie recommendation to watch when I wan drunk 6 hrs ago and then this.. its different.. it went to different level. I have been adding all of the movies recommended by this community in my watch-list on IMDB and even downloaded 4-5 movies till now. Most of the recommended fit according to my taste. I hope it does with other as well.

Sorry If I didn't change the thread title(mentioning somewhat like there's no GA to GA by MaxThunder), I didn't want to because there will be non-contributing members just for GA, no matter how good the community is there will be some bad eggs.

And again thanks for the GA.

I just watched it again after mentioning it the other day. It seems a bit cheesy looking at it now, but keep in mind, this movie came out in 1994, before broadband and cell phones, and games came on shiny silver round things called compact discs.

It wasn't a huge hit, but it has kind of a cult following. It's hard to find legit and non legit copies. I own it on VHS, but that doesn't do me any good since I don't have a VCR. I wanted to buy it on DVD a few years ago, but all I could find were ridiculously expensive used copies. Netflix got it on DVD, so I ripped rented it.

I saw Primer in the theater when it came out. They were running a promotion that if you wondered WTF just happened after watching the movie, you could show your ticket to get a FREE ticket to a subsequent showing.

After going through the thread, it seems all my sci-fi suggestions have already been given, but after seeing all these great movies listed in this thread I couldn't leave it without listing....

Jacob's Ladder
Session 9

Wow, that seem nice. And by any means the "WTF just happened" factor vanished? I heard it was too complex kind of movie so I haven't watched till now.
Jacob's Ladder was also a kind of mindfuck movie.

No, WTF didn't go away. :-) I subsequently got a copy and have re-watched it many times. I have a certain love for the movie, and still watch it every now and then, but at a certain point (late in the movie) I lose track of what's going on. I still love the concept and the raw indie style it's done in. It was only at some indie theater here in Toronto. I don't imagine any major release theater would have an offer like that. It won the Grand Jury & Alfred P. Sloan Award (science movie) at the 2004 Sundance film festival.

Agree about J.L.

I had never heard of Session 9, but watched it late one night by myself, and found it quite disturbing. Atmosphere is great....being set in an old condemned insane asylum can do that. It seems everyone I've ever mentioned about it to, has never heard of it. Ones who later watched it, liked it.
