Not since Chewbacca got arrested for creating Wookieleaks did anything excite me as much as Kerbal Space Program / Dead Rising 4 / RUINER in a bundle!
At this point I'm just subscribed for extra wallet credits from Humble Indie Bundles. I find this meh, but I'm still too lazy to cancel my sub.
Tempted to buy, I might be, or I might not. Guide me, the force must.
"Luke… I'm reading a great book about Force Levitation.. I can’t put it down – but I'll at least cancel my sub."
Not convince me to purchase the bundle, this does. Try harder next time.
I'm certain they'll uncover a certain Star Wars themed free to play MMO as a Late Early Unlock. Oh wait, that's not on Steam.
Why did Anakin cross the road? Same as Humble, to get to the Dark Side! Vader = IGN confirmed.

I see your point; although, the newly revealed games don't look particularly impressive. I don't think it will make them loose sales, but definitely won't help much either.

So only 3 games left to be revealed. Seems like they should just release the entire bundle atp.

Option 1) All unlock day 1, none hidden, you know what you're buying at the first moment
Option 2) 3 unlock day 1, 3 more in half month, last games unlock in the last day (let still to buy it)
Option 3) Equal to option 2 but with discounts if buy the bundle early, how many more hidden games in the moment of buying more % discount.

Option 1>>>>>3>>2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> current system of subs/almost all hidden games

I mean the hook of the monthly is to be different from the standard bundles, so what you are saying is just retarded

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The real hook of monthly I think that are the recent games unbundled, not the hidden format, in my case with option 1, 2 or 3 I had already bought many more monthlys for sure, but it is clear that until now HB thought that with their current format selling more. I hope that they change it, maybe this is the 1st step, or maybe not and this monthy is simply an exception.

3 unlocks? Probably the slowest month for HB. SAD!

This is rather meh... just unveil all the games from day one then.
For me it is usually: if the early unlock has one game I'm interested in (even mildly) I go for it. But this... makes the hiding of games feel pointless. Thanks IGN.

I prefer average surprise to average uncovered games. I'm interested in Ruiner and Moon Hunters and jealopy is interesting (maybe) and crazy machines is a good game of a good series for a giveaway, but not exactly the best bundle as a promise for me... though far from the worst.

A game which is expensive is not mean that you will play them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Correct. But many people just rant and don't even try to state that it's just not interesting for them due to genres or settings of the games. The cost-benefit ratio is great. And it's the point of a bundle to include games that aren't in high demand or to attract more people to other playstyles.

The problem is people use the language (or ratings in general) in different ways:

Something can be good but not interesting to a person.

  • Now a lot of people would call that crap or say that is sucks...because they don't care IF it actually is good, they just rate it based on what it's worth to them/how they liked it.

  • Other people though acknowledge that something can be good despite not being interested in it.

Though I'm with you, I often find all the complaining really odd.

Sometimes people just use language in wrong ways. The Witcher 3 is good. Would I ever buy it or play it? No way, because I wouldn't enjoy it. This doesn't render me unable to acknowledge its quality. It also doesn't render me unable to trade it or sell it and get something I like, if I get it from a bundle. :)

More and more I suspect the sales of the Monthlies aren't going that hot or, at least, not as well as IGN would like. If this becomes the new standard from now on, it's a double-edged sword: seeing so many contents already revealed may encourage more people to buy a Monthly, but an equal number may be discouraged seeing only few or none of the games are really of their taste. Can't deny I like the former more, though.

I wonder why they don't make it a "regular" super-bundle at this point, purchasable until the next Monthly comes out, or give the option for one-time buys. Maybe it's the intention, especially if they wanted to eventually go with the suggestions of that poll some time ago - costlier bundles but prices more similar to the current one for subscribers of 6 or 12 month plans.

Also, maybe I'm stretching too much, but I wonder if the backlash against the concept of "blind-buy loot box" may have been a factor. The Monthly is one, after all.

A blind buy is not a gamble.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Blind buy could be the very definition of a gamble :)

gamble
noun

  1. a risky action undertaken with the hope of success.

It is a gamble, as there is no guarantee that one will get anything worthwhile for themselves. A gamble =/= gambling.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I disagree. Everyone gets the same in a Monthly, there's no element of chance. And empirically, you can always get your money back by selling the games. We can easily agreeto disagree. :)

Every single person in the casino put 10$ on the red, eagerly waiting for the next roll, and suddenly roulette stopped being a gamble.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I just don't think it's like that. Red might pay 2x or nothing, it doesn't matter how many people play it. In HM, what you get is predetermined, you just don't know it. I don't think it's the same thing at all.

I don't know how can you still deny that the definition fits. You don't know what you'll get, and there's a chance that nothing appealing. It's a worse case scenario. You can get all wishlisted / wanted games. That's the best case scenario, and obviously, there are middle grounds. Also while you can sell your games, it's effort, time, and not sure if someone is interested. It's simple to see that it's a worse scenario than having all wanted games. Therefore the definition of "a risky action undertaken with the hope of success." of a gamble fits. And again, because people still keep messing them up after even pointing it out: gambLING is not the same as A GAMBLE. Not taking an umbrella with you on a cloudy day is a gamble ; going late to lunch and hope that the cafeteria still has your favourite food is a gamble if others also like to eat it. A gamble essentially means taking a risk. And HB with (previously, at least) majority of the games hidden is still a gamble.

And my analogue with roulette still stands - it has a risk, regardless of the 0-or-double payout. Just because everyone takes the same risk, a thing won't stop being risky, that's just an ignorant approach because having a shared success / fail decreases the feeling of individuality. Of course the same bundle can be a great one for some, and failure for the other, but as their preferences differ, the same result can be beneficial for one, and negative for the other - it will be decided on the individual's level, therefore it's not a valid arguement that everyone will get the same.

Sure it is. Just like a blind date is a gamble. It could go well or it could end up being a disaster.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It a figurative sense, many things can be a gamble. An offensive formation in sports, a hard but valuable education choice... A gamble is money vs. the chance of more money or valuable goods. Like I wrote above, there's no element of chance in a Humble Monthly, so it's not a gamble in the true meaning of the word.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The games may already be set but there absolutely is an element of chance because you don't know what you are getting when you are buying blind. You could be getting good ones and/or stuff if you are interested in, or conversely the opposite. That alone makes it a gamble.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's no element of chance. There's a lack of knowledge, which is a different thing. It's like you pay $900 (or whatever) and either get an iPhone 8 or a Galaxy S9. They are not the same and you can prefer one or the other. But there's no chance you will get nothing and there's no chance you get a $100 phone. Maybe I'd keep the Galaxy; I would definitely sell the iPhone. Still: same value.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How can there be a lack of knowledge if there is no way to know something because it is purposely kept secret? I would think that would be fairly obvious. As such, this makes it a guessing game and there is a rather significant element of chance. Now as far as value or worth to someone goes that is a subjective thing and may vary wildly from one person to another.

Some people can't understand the difference between a gamble (taking a risk) and gambling, where you either win some or lose everything, even after explaining the difference to them. Guy up here is the prime example of that.

I don't understand your first sentence. As for value/worth, it's not subjective. It's the amount of money you can expect to get by selling something and it's determined by the so-called market. Worth/value of something to you or me is clearly subjective.

I don't understand your first sentence.

Why am I not surprised?

As for value/worth, it's not subjective. It's the amount of money you can expect to get by selling something and it's determined by the so-called market. Worth/value of something to you or me is clearly subjective.

I understand what you were trying to say but going from the first sentence to the last reads like a direct self-contradiction. Stop trying to be so anally literal with everything and use some common sense and realize that there is nuance to things.

Anyway this is an exercise in futility so I'm done here. As Sheldon Cooper would say (and I'm paraphrasing), "I throw my arms up in the air, exhausted by your constant tomfoolery". Have fun pointlessly arguing with the next person.

So many games unlocked early. I think they are experimenting here to see people's reactions. I remember participation in a survey by HB ecently and it contained many possible models for the monthly bundle and I think this might have been one of those option, maybe many people voted for this hence they are trying it out now.
