"small maneuverable car, can't be too strong, have at best 5k€, must be pretty"
Alfa Romeo Mito maybe? 2008-10 probably https://www.google.pl/search?q=alfa+romeo+mito&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=eNKbVa79NaX5ygOQgYHgCg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1024&bih=631

It looks incredibly expensive and quite bad though:

yeah, I'm not sure how Mito works. well, this is Alfa... ;) replacement parts and servis may be expensive, dunno, this is matter of reading some specialist forums, I heard that newer Alfa Romeo cars are less troublesome.
but this is sexy machine, for sure :3
anyway I would say that Skoda Fabia (2010-12) may be nice shot, I bet that used car market in Croatia is similar to Polish so prices should be similar too. this is just VW technology (maybe one step back compared to equal age VW Golf), parts and usage cost should be not expensive in everyday use.

I know nothing about cars but how about a used Batmobile?

Actually, I think she means "undercarriage." The chassis is the frame or "bones" of the car upon which everything else is placed/attached.

How about the Mystery Machine? I'm just shooting in the dark.

I would like to see how you drive one without power steering :D And don't get me started on parking without power steering.

They can easily be painted pink.
In seriousness though I think if the weather does get bad I'd look for something with 4WD, but most cars like that in that price range would be saloon or estate cars (i.e. Subaru Legacy) which funny enough is cheaper than a Subaru Impreza despite the fact it was banned from Rally Championships for being too powerful, but whatever.
Best I can think of off the top of my head are VW Golfs and Polo, new Fiat Pandas, Peugeot 205 GTI or Lancia Delta Integrale for ultimate kek. Edit: Oh and Honda Jazz, which just will refuse to go wrong.
Comment has been collapsed.
I find that hard to believe, subaru legacy is no that powerful. Definitely not more powerful than impreza wrx sti.
Comment has been collapsed.
It was their WRC car before the Impreza and does have a larger more powerful engine. The difference between the road versions though is that the Legacy weights like 2 tons which means Impreza has better power to weight distribution. Still has excellent offroad capability and in other rally championships it's preferred over the Impreza.

I once considered buying all 150 and seeing if I could give them away on SteamGifts.

One more recommendation. After you decide which car you will purchase. Find your country's car club for that car. Sometimes it's a car club for make of the car like VW club or Opel club, but sometimes there are even more specific car clubs, like WV golf club.
Car club will most likely have a forum in which you could talk with other persons that already own that car. And they will know way more about that car than any of us could tell you.

+1 for excellent advice
I never even considered that, but I'll try it out for my next car purchase.

And then spend 50% of time repairing it. I must agree though. it looks good. But alfa romeos are notorious for their bad reliability.
Comment has been collapsed.
Newer Alfa's are quite good but I wouldn't touch the older ones with a 10ft stick.
Comment has been collapsed.
I know they do rust a lot, and the electrics are not that good. They are certainly nice looking cars though but it's like they say "you are not a car enthusiast if you've never owned an Alfa".

Hmm .. when it comes to looks, tastes tend to differ, a lot ... so pretty is relative. People here already mentioned VW Golf, or Polo, which are, indeed very reliable cars, but also expensive. However, you might want to take a look at Skoda's models, because basically you get a car with a reliable VW (Skoda belongs to VW) engine, that's much cheaper than a Polo or Golf. Here in Germany, the smallest model is called Citgo, it's cheap, ideal for short trips around town and it doesn't need much fuel. Now I've checked the Croatia website, sees like it might be not available in Croatia, in which case the next best model would be a "Fabia", which is still a small car and not too expensive, see here for details (hopefully I got the website correctly, as I don't speak Croatian): http://www.skoda.hr/fabia/nova_fabia/pregled
Oh and before I forget to mention, you can buy those cars, in a stunning bright yellow (at least over here), which - in my opinion - contributes a lot to "prettiness", as it's so much cooler than boring red, silver or black.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I heard it that the price went up quite a bit with new model. I still got one the last ones from the old model. Maybe you could get a used one that's like one or two years old? Also, it it true that they don't sell the Citigo models in Croatia? I didn't find them on the website, but that doesn't mean that you can't get one over there.

Umešao bih se u tvoju wishlistu, ako nemaš ništa protiv;
Nemoj uzimati premali auto. Kad imaš auto, češće i dalje ideš...
Još jedna stvar koju u potpunosti razumem.
Eto... Sorry ako sam previse smorio xD
Comment has been collapsed.
Comment has been collapsed.
P.S. Sorry za obraćanje u muškom rodu u prvom postu... Nisam obraćao pažnju na nick xD
Comment has been collapsed.
xD Izvini... Jbg...
Comment has been collapsed.
A popravka skupa...
Comment has been collapsed.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ehe... Nije ti uvek koncentracija 100%...

I would give you a more detailed information but I'm not from Croatia and I can't help in this way. But all the cars are small, it spend less petrol than other cars and are the cheapest of each brand. If you want some detailed information about some car in the list you can message me and I will try to help you with my bad english...

suzuki swift could be got second hand and with decent optionals and colours for kind of cheap, no direct experience with it though

"The reason I'm leaning towards Peugeot is the fact that I've learned to drive in one and I'm just used to the feeling of that brand. It has all the controls in all the right places."
That shouldn't be the main buy arguement. It's like gaming - you need some time to get in - once you have gotten in and get used to it, you will be fine with the majority of cars, I guess.
It's not a small thing to buy a car you will be with for years. Google 'cute small cars' or something and take your time to work through the goodies, there are plenty... ;)
My personal favorite in the small cute liga at the moment would be an Audi A1 cabrio >> They look so bad ass cute ☺
[Not sure about the price, however :( ]

I still agree with VW Golf, they are pretty and cheap to keep. >.< Idk why you don't like them.

Ok I just gotta say I agree with the French car bashing... But being from the USA we don't buy Peugeots, shit, I'm not sure I've even SEEN one in a decade. Citroens even less so!
I wasn't even aware that either of them made a "pretty" car (or a reliable one)
Sorry for the no help, I just had to get those jabs in :P

I got an Opel Corsa, for the same reasons as you said. It was the better choice for me in my price range.

if you do low mileage avoid diesel cars. the vw polo, nissan micra pre (2001 mazda i think) take over, or have a look at skodas. the yeti is good even though it looks a bit bigger it doesn't feel it to drive and gives pretty good mpg even in 4x4 (optional) mode and might handle snow a bit better too.

Sadly I do not know crap about European cars. I only have a bit of knowledge about American and Japanese cars, and even there, most racing/sports/exotic cars... I was a bit of a supercars enthusiast years ago...
Comment has been collapsed.
After reading through this whole topic I realized that I have little or no knowledge of European cars and wore out my Google search looking up some of the ones that have been mentioned.
I haven't seen a Peugeot in years. I didn't even know that the company was still in business. They were regarded pretty much as junk over here in the U.S.
What about a Fiat? I don't know what the prices are like over there for them but I thought that they made models that were economical and fit your needs.
Comment has been collapsed.
LoL "Fix It Again, Tony"s aren't regarded much higher though. Years past they were also terrible rust buckets...
I made a similar comment about the Peugeot above.
It's too bad she can't afford anything German, I instantly wanted to suggest the VW or Mercedes, but I guess they don't fit the budget too well.. But the fact they hold those higher values used pretty much tells you what you need to know about reliability.
Comment has been collapsed.
I remember that being the case in the late 60's and 70's but they seem to be selling quite a few new ones here in the U.S. now and I haven't heard anything bad about them. I figured that their quality had improved. I guess we'll know for sure in a few years when they've had a few miles put on them.

Stop! Please consider this comprehensive Peugeot review from BBC's Top Gear: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2if9gy
Cheaply-made, sloppy-handling, lackluster dung, the lot of it.
.
Peugeot may have been good at making sturdy cars and sporty cars but it seemed they were absolutely brilliant at making terrible cars.
.
Are you two saying that Peugeot have spent 10 years deliberately making terrible cars?
Well, yeah, you can't make cars that consistently bad by accident.

I live close to the sea but there are also hills around
It can snow quite heavily (the heavily part often only for a week or so) during the winter
It has to have a big back window so I can actually see through it (like Peugeot 107, unlike Citroen Xsara)
Air conditioning would be great but I can survive without it
I think this would be a perfect match... my former neighbor used to drive one, and he loved that thing as it was cheap and reliable. You should mind that he wasn't poor (just maybe a bit crazy), as he had other SUVs like Grand Cherokee or a M-Class Mercedes beforehand.

Hello? Why nobody said Smart? There is the new model out now, so you can find used ones for cheap. They are reliable, have huge space in them (me and my dad are 190cm tall and can fit in it with a week worth of food), has only two seats, ok, but I won't say that a 107 has 4 seats. You cant fit anyone there... Don't listen to all this "VW Golf" guys, they dont know anything about getting a good car for cheap. I don't say it's bad, but man, I got a new i20 with the same money as a Golf. Reliable, cuter and bigger...

Well, i don't want to be that guy, but did you think it thoroughly ? buying a car isn't a small thing, they are expensive and can be pricey to maintain and use, think about whether you really need a car, then make your decision about which one to get, as a matter of fact they are really useful, but do take the time to think about your situation and whether you REALLY need it right now or if it could wait, good luck =)
Comment has been collapsed.
well then, you know your stuff, i'll just give you my personal experience, i have a Nissan Micra and i must say it is quite satisfying and doesn't consume a lot but it is mainly meant for city use, i don't know about the state of your roads and snow and stuff and all =)
Comment has been collapsed.
The roads are so-so. There are a lot of manholes everywhere and sometimes when it rains heavily (and my city is known for a lot of heavy rain) one road that I'll be using can get, in some places, really really over-flooded. They even take out one manhole in the left lane so the water could pour away. That street is basically a death trap for anyone who doesn't know everything that happens there when it rains...
The snow in the city isn't a problem but the outskirts can get several cm of snow and there are a few climbs and slopes that the car will have to be able to handle,
Comment has been collapsed.
I bought it used about 6/7 months ago now, but I only passed my driving test around 2 weeks ago so I've only really just started using it properly. The first problem I had was the sound of running water coming from the left side whenever I accelerated, but I filled up the coolent and the disappeared. But now the clutch has started making a very strange clunk or click occasionally when pressed in, I'm not 100% sure what the problem is but a lot of people seem to say it's probably the clutch cable or the self adjuster, and it's a pain in the ass to fix yourself so I might have to take it to a garage and hope it's not too expensive...
But apart from that, I think it's a pretty decent car. It's quite easy to drive, good handling etc. However I feel like the pedals are a little awkwardly placed, especially the clutch as I often hit my foot on the side next to the pedal itself, but I think it's just a matter of getting used to it. The running costs are quite cheap too, which is good. The fuel economy isn't too bad. It's quite a nice looking car on the outside but on the inside it's not the prettiest thing I've seen. But yeah! Hope this helps?
Comment has been collapsed.
They both seem like fairly common faults on these cars, I wouldn't let that scare you off though, still a prety good car. If you can afford it, I'd get a 207, they seem to have less problems, they're more reliable and safer. But I'm no expert so don't take my word on any of this!!

Well, the time to start thinking about buying a car has finally come and I have no one (who really know about cars) to help me with this decision so I resort to you, my dearest people of SG.
Time and time again you've surprised me with your knowledge and I'm really hoping you'll be able to give me some advice with this. I wouldn't even be opening a topic like this here if I had any hope of getting help on a Croatian forum but, as far as I've read, people there can be so mean.
I'd deeply appreciate your opinions and knowledge <3
Here are the facts:
I'm from Croatia
I live close to the sea but there are also hills around
It can snow quite heavily (the heavily part often only for a week or so) during the winter
I haven't really driven a car for the past 5 years (since I got my license)
I learned to drive (and was pretty amazing at it) on Peugeot 107
The car would be used for short distances 99% of the time (going to work, shopping and stuff like that)
The car would be garaged
Here are my wishes:
I need a small car. I don't feel comfortable driving long cars and I know if I get one that doesn't fit me I'll just avoid driving it and be extremely nervous when I get in it.
It has to have a big back window so I can actually see through it (like Peugeot 107, unlike Citroen Xsara)
Air conditioning would be great but I can survive without it
I need a car that has a "quick start" and is very maneuverable but isn't too strong (I don't drive over 120 km/h, ever)
It must be pretty <3
And now for the worst part....xD
I could scrounge up, at the very most, 4500€ (maaaaybe 5000 if I stopped eating)
I was thinking about Peugeot 206cc but I've read a lot of bad things about it in the forums (the leaky roof, goes all "klinky-klanky" as time goes by and so on) .
Peugeot 206 and 207 are also options but, again, have read bad things about them.
The reason I'm leaning towards Peugeot is the fact that I've learned to drive in one and I'm just used to the feeling of that brand. It has all the controls in all the right places. I feel like I could just jump into one and get back on the road without a problem and, I'm sure you all understand that after 5 years of basically no driving, this is really important to me.
Naturally, I'm not married to Peugeot and other brands are also an option, it's just that I haven't thought about them much.
TL;DR: Need a small maneuverable car, can't be too strong, have at best 5k€, must be pretty :D
