Well, I don't think it's the best system. Sure, it encourages giving away stuff on the site, but in the same time, there is an issue. I find it pretty weird that some game giveaways can be entered only by people with, let's say, 500 $ of contributions, because it is pretty clear that giving away 500 $ worth of games to strangers means they have enough money to purchase the giveaway game for themselves no problem, while robbing the chance from poorer users.

The thing is, SteamGifts is all about the opportunity to win those games. As long as those people with 500 dollar+ contributions are playing the games they're winning I don't see the problem. They may be out of money as well. (From buying all those games to giveaway to other people.)
SteamGifts is not SteamRedistributeTheWealth. It provides the opportunity for unfortunate users without access to the means to buy these games, but many people cannot buy these games because they're out of money. I'm guessing that many people spend part of their entertainment budget to giveback to the community.
To put this in another light, I wouldn't under any circumstance state that anyone is being robbed of anything. These people that giveaway massive amounts of games are putting more giveaways out there than they are winning. What's unfair about that? They've got an extremely high ratio of giveaways to giveaways won. They're keeping this community alive. Giving back to those who give to the community seems to be sensible.

This. Started after the Christmas sale. Tried trading games, and did with CS:GO & DOTA2, for games I actually wanted, but with the other games, Portal, Cogs, Hydrophobia Prophecy, nobody wanted to trade anything for them, so I gave them away here.

I buy way too much stuff and have no time to play it all afterward. But I make a point of only entering for games I believe I will play. It's possible to not like a game as much as you thought you would and that it doesn't get played as much as it should.

Same, and also, like you said, to not feel like a dickhead that never gives back to the community, I don't like to be labeled as a leecher

When I make a giveaway Karma awards me. So it's a win-win situation.

I won my first before making my first. Then I realised that I don't want to be a leecher.

Giving away games i wont play anyway seems the best option for me.

I create giveaways when I have extra games I get from packs or events (like the Steam Christmas event), and just occasionally on the spur of the moment when I happen to feel like it, such as in the recent rabbit holes thing here on the forums.

i give away stuff i already have and my friends either also already have it or wouldn't play it. typically i get stuff i already have through bundles and packs that also have stuff i don't have but want. if i pay for a game a second (or third, fourth, etc) time, it's nice if somebody gets a chance to play it. of course some bundles / packs don't let me give away the extra copies.

I contributed the moment I won my first game. I felt that if I was going to get something, I should give something. Shame the guy never gifted it.

When I've bought games for myself, I've sometimes ended up with extra copies of games I already own in the process. Since I don't need those extras and don't personally know any friends who would want them, I figured I might as well give them away here and let someone get some use out of them. They're not doing me much good sitting in my inventory.

I contributed and TBH people should be happy that someone gift games away without them doing anything..
Sure, some people "abuse" the system and use private giveaway etc etc... but comeon... there is plenty of none contributor games to be won and nobody is asking you anything for it!!!
The reason I contributed was due to different reasons.
A. I wanted to make someone happy, a person that never played HL etc.
B. It makes sense for me to contribute when I won so much myself.. (you give and you get)
Without anyone being friendly and contributing there would be no steamgifts.

Now I hear many leechers saying that the contributors only giveaways are a bad idea, but what I believe is that it's what keeps the site active, so tell me, what are your reasons for contributing? I know that some of you do it out of the goodness of your hearts and I respect that but I doubt everyone has the same reasons as you guys.
