I'm not a big horror fan, so I have very few games in my list. The last one I tried to play and failed was SIGNALIS.
That said, if Little Nightmares could be considered horror, that would be my pick. I love the artstyle and the overall vibe of the game, the juxtaposition of your small character and the massive monstruous characters chasing you. Colors and lightning are so well done. Enjoyed every second of it, and best of all, it was a SG win :)

Welcome to my WL :)

Signalis looks great, added to my wishlist.
I plan on playing Little Nightmares, reminds me of Limbo a bit although Limbo was pretty minimalistic compared to it.

Thank you for the WL addition :)

I played both Limbo and Little Nightmares last year, and I enjoyed Little Nightmares waaaaaaaaaaaay more. I think Limbo was really influential back in the day when it launched, but playing it today, I felt it was a bit clunky. Sure, it has some scary moments, but it's mostly a puzzler and I didn' think it was a great one at that.

Little Nightmares, on the other hand, wears it's horror influence on the sleeve. Chase sequences are common and unscripted, unlike the ones in Limbo. It requires some puzzle thinking, but it's kind of a puzzler wrapped around a horror game, instead of a puzzle game with horror elements in it

I'm just babbling at this point, but TLDR Limbo bad Little Nightmares good 😂

I agree about Limbo! It wasn't as special as people made it out to be and some puzzles were very tideous... can't wait to play Little Nightmares! :)

As favorite I would say it's Soma, I like its immersive sci-fi atmosphere with mind uploading concept, it gives some food for thought about future of humankind.
But the most memorable for me is Penumbra Black Plague, because it was very interesting and scary af at the same time when I played it as a child. It gave me some nightmares afterwards lol. Though the whole Penumbra series is good. After that tried Amnesia, but I found it boring and didn't complete even half of the game.

I need to play SOMA, so many people here recommend it!

Penumbra Black Plague was amazing and scary as hell along with the first Penumbra. Sadly, third Penumbra was just a puzzle game which bore the hell out of me...

I gotta say, i despise horror games, but i still managed to have a really good time with Sea of Solitude even if it made me super spooked. The story and gameplay were well worth the occasional butt clench.

It's probably the evil within. I don't really like the horror genre, because in most of them the main character can only run away and there is a lot of absurdity. But in this game there is an atmosphere of nightmare, because the illogic is not evident. Plus a good story and gameplay. Although the game is weak as a horror. The old action RPG Arx Fatalis scared me more)

I loved Evil Within, finished it twice along with the DLCs. Still haven't played the second one though!
I remember Arx Fatalis but played it for a few minutes only if I recall.

In my opinion, the open world did not benefit the second part of Evil Within. And the atmosphere of the first game was wasted.
Yes, Arx Fatalis is an old game, it doesn't look very good after modern games. But it's still an original representative of dark fantasy.

Outlast is my favorite horror game and it's definitely on my top 5 games of all time. It is simply the scariest piece of fiction I've ever experienced. The first playthrough was terrifying, it is so scary that I can't even think of another game that comes close to how scary it is and I've played so many. But it's not just the horror that makes it my favorite but also the story and the worldbuilding. Usually, horror games use the supernatural as the main source of fear and the driver behind the scares but not with outlast. It understands that the scariest thing possible is a human being not a ghost yet it still pulls out the scariest ghost(rider) in a game ever. Let me put it like this: Outlast is so scary, it killed the horror genre for me. I've never felt any fear from playing any other game after I've played Outlast, everything pales in comparison including the sequel.

I loved Outlast, finished it five times if I recall correctly. The DLC is great as well! Still haven't played the second one though.

If you liked Outlast try Penumbra 1 and 2 - mechanics are a bit dated but the atmosphere is creepy and scary as hell.

Everyone has different opinion, of course, but i would suggest starting with DS2. Community consensus is that DS2 should be avoided because it's just flawed but i think it's the best one and definitely the best entry point. Just play the original, not the Scholar of the First Sin, the latter is actual garbage.

Outlast. I love the idea of the plot, gameplay. Of course, this feeling of helplessness is very depressing, since you can not punish the enemy, but it is a real horror that scares the tingles all over the body. I'm new here so know I won't qualify for your WL, but wanted to say my favourite horror game is, without a doubt, Silent Hill. It had me on edge each time it went to the "old time". If you consider System Shock a horror game, that is my choice. I played it back in 1996 (yep, I am old), and back then it was the most immersive game I had ever played.

To illustrate that.... how do I do this without spoilers... let us say that at a certain point the game suggests a possibility of a quick good ending ("do this and you will be free!", sort of)... But you do know in the back of your head that you have onlly explored about 50% ot the map, so it can't be the planned end. Anwyay, the game was so immersive that I found myself rushing like crazy towards this "quick good ending", and when my intentions were (of course) thwarted by SHODAN, I found myself swearing at the screen something like "you f*cking vile bastard". Even if deep inside I knew it was just a game, and that no way that would be the end, I got immersed enough to play it "in character". That was great!

(And usually I am very cold, I don't think I EVER screamed at the screen before or after that.)

Cheers!

Thanks!

Honestly, it is a bit hard to recommend the old version these days -- the control scheme was super strange, even back then! But the remake is good enough, it captures a big PART of the magic of the original (though of course many of the things which were groundbreaking at that time aren't anymore). The main antagonist, SHODAN, is still quite remarkable, I think.

Cheers!

It's difficult to say since I'm not particularly a fan of the genre.
If I had to name one I would be between Clive Barker and The Suffering. Those two were really great at the time.

Clive Barker's Undying got reaaaally dated, sadly. However, The Suffering was amazing, the first one, the second one sucked. I wish they made a remake, it would be amazing.

Sorry Nergeyn but you don't meet the requirements to be added to my WL (wins/gifts ratio as well as level) but you're welcome in the future once your stats chage! :)

A remake of Suffering would be amazing indeed, but it might need a few fixes in the plot here and there to make it up to todays standar.
In CB defense, the amount of times it gave me anxiety while playing it deserves a mention.
Now that we are on topic, Fatal Frame is a series I'm still waiting to play some day. As far as I have seen, they looks great.

I'm a big fan of Resident Evil and have played all of them since the first one on PS1. It's a horror game, but it's only scary in the beginning when you only have a knife or a handgun, but once you get a strong weapon like a shotgun or a grenade launcher, the gameplay changes drastically.
Thanks.
