Hello my idea is gonna look weird but i was wondering if cg had ever thought about a website using a part of SG code where people could date based on their steam accounts. There would be an account value entry(the same as the one needed to join Steamgifts) to limit the risks of abuse, but no real sort of contributor value.

Steamgifts can detect which game you have so we can imagine a system where you could look for people having same games as you for example, or a quizz where you write which are your favourite games/kindof games. This new website brother of SG and Strades could also be used to make new friends too. With millions of users from Steamgifts the possibilities would be numerous. Of course the system would have its limits as with all dating websites, but it would be an opportunity to date people who share the same hobby as you, video games. The staff would be the same as the one used for Steamgifts, and would be allowed to participate.

Finding matches based on the games you play doesn't seem like a good idea to me at all. Gaming in general - well, maybe. For example, my boyfriend for 4 years now hates half of the games I play and even makes fun saying "you're playing shit lol" (not in an insulting manner though). So if we're talking about this dating site, I would have never met my bf there, according to these matching rules. The type of games a person plays doesn't really matter. It's more like accepting gaming as each other's hobby and sometimes playing some MP games together maybe.

Another drawback I see here is that it would probably create a lot of long distance relationships and everyone knows that these are lovely but rarely work to the point where you get married or something.

As a free dating site? No. Hugely bad idea.

As a site with a premium and very, very few free trial offers.... yes.

I did the mistake of bringing my ex to League of Legends.
That's when I stopped playing ranked games because every time I connected she wanted me to play with her

Nope. Stay away from that idea. Not sure if this would help.
Unless the purpose was to meant people than are closer to each one.

But still.. My gaming library doesn't represent at all my personal taste. Because backlog and all.

Anyway, I have girlfriend. And she doesn't play 5%1% of what I play.

What is date?

Oh, please don't. As if dating platforms aren't already a sausage fest, but with a dating platform for gamers it would be... terrifying for women to say the least. Even now every profile with a female profile picture is showered in flacid dicks anyway. Plus I'd never want to date a gamer girl and dating someone based on similar videogame taste? Even worse. :D

I've never been to an organize geek dating thing, but there's a Geek dance club here in Stockholm, and you would be surprised by how even the gender distribution actually is there. I would say about 40% girls/60% guys.

Define Geek, though. Nowadays being nerdy and/or geeky is somewhat in style although it used to be a derogative term.
It went from being this to becoming this. Yes, the second image says nerd model in the file name, but I found sexy nerd make-up tutorials as well when searching for a contemporary nerd image. It proves the point however. :D

Well, geek as in "likes video games, anime and that sort of stuff". They would play video game music, anime music (most of it was game music though) and have arcade machines and different retro consoles along the walls, so you could step away from the dance floor to play Street Fighter II or Pong with someone. You would have to like that sort of stuff to get anything out of being there.

To be honest, this sounds amazing. So amazing in fact that I wouldn't be suprised to find some average people there, that don't identify as passionate gamers or geeks. Still - it sounds really good. :D

Gaming is not really a niche hobby, so yeah, there will be people who don't identify themselves as hardcore gamers, but still enjoy games a lot, who will be drawn to a place like that.

Just as a sidenote: I could kill for a place where I can discuss games, sci-fi, fantasy, science or something more science-y than elementary school and no one would be like "meh, I don't understand it anyways". Sometimes I just doesn't know what are "normal" people talking about, because most of the stuff I'm interested in is boring or too nerdy for most :D

No need to commit homicide, Adam, because I've got just the right thing for you. Steam! You're welcome.
But seriously, wouldn't you find a fair share of geeks on Steam and isn't the interwebz filled with message boards dedicated to exactly what you want? Or is it the possibility of sexual intercourse on top that you'd kill for? I though you had a girlfriend, you rascal! :D

Platonically I like the idea of getting matched with someone with similar gaming experience and a compatible personality. I just don't see the value of it romantically though if that's what you're going for.

Well, finding an echo to your soulis already kind of romantic in one way, an opportunity to find a proof that you can be a star like other stars in the sky(that is an image i like from To the Moon)

Hi
My name is Fnord, I love making home cooked meals, chilling out with a nice cup of tea, and cuddling up in front of my computer screen while I nuke Germany in Hearts of Iron IV. Looking for a UK to my US.

Actually, the idea of having gamer-based dating services is nothing new. There is, or at least was, a UK based one called something along the line of Date a Gamer. They also made a spinoff called Shag a gamer. Use your imagination for that one ;)

Just doing it based on games played might not be the best approach. While it might make the initial meetings a bit easier (you know what to play together), you'll need a better algorithm behind the scenes for finding good matches. It sounds like it would require a lot of work to make it work well, and even more so to monitor it in case some real creeps try to use it (those who like to contact underaged people, or who are just downright nasty). So I don't think SG is the place for it, it would likely be better if it was a bit more regional, and also expanded out a bit more into other related fields (say geek dating in general).

That would most likely be the only way I'd ever meet local singles in my area... I find it impossible to socialise with people that don't share my interests, so yeah, the idea is fun, god knows we could use more gamer focused dating sites.

I understand about coding about as mutch as I understand about dating (got it?) but I'm pretty sure the part about getting stats and owned games from steam is actually the very easy part of doing it, as Steam more or less give suport to that for 3rd part sites.

Now the major flaw here is that you're talking about asking someone who probably is already pretty busy with dealing with SG and his personal stuff to simple stop and so something else., that's probably is less likely to happens than most of your target public actually dating with help of some site or not.

That said, I don't believe mutch in those dating sites and stuff at all, so there's a good chance of my view of it being biased to not hope mutch for that, but if you can find a programmer that you could hire for that or willing to give his free time for that, I'm sure that the part of filling it with lone gamers looking for someone to love would be easy, just as would be hard to deal with the scammers roaming on it after some good targets =/

In my experience, every mmo becomes a dating site... You play certain game, meet other people doing the same, spend a lot of time with them and over the time feelings develop... I've been in a relationship that came out of it, seen many many more people develop theirs same way... I don't think your idea would be such a bad one... You find someone who has same interests as you and has a same hobby (video games), and playing same/similar games as you (which gives some leads about their interests and personality) and that's a pretty good start... Also in my experience, i don't think there's such a big difference in male/female population of gamers...

Well, I don't know which mmo you played but in almost all the mmorpg there is 2 girls every 20.000 players, and one of those two is for sure a man.
Not the best way to get dates.

Not my experience with MMOs... Usually there's a relatively even gender balance. Slightly more men than women, but not massively so.
