I don't think Skyrim was even hit this hard when the paid mod fiscal happened.

EDIT: See poll as Rockstar/Take-Two, and not as just Rockstar.

How dare Take Two do as they please with their own property >_<

I wonder how these people would feel if Steam told them they couldn't change the GPU in their PC.

how dare people have an opinion and stage protests on the mean spirited actions that developers take to ruin gamers fun. They are, after all, the ones paying money for a product - take two isnt making games out of the goodness of their heart or providing a free service...

Of course you're allowed an opinion. When did I say you couldn't? Just as I'm allowed an opinion on this matter too. You paid $60 for the game. Take Two paid $600 million for it. Which one of you two do you think have more invested in it?

Staging a protest is one thing, trying to drive a company into the ground because they took your toy away.. Well

  1. nobody is driving anyone into the ground here.

  2. i think it's more about changing a product after it's been sold. that's not ok. people had certain expectations, and now they are not satisfied anymore. steam user reviews are a platform to voice your opinion and make your recommendation. and people simply don't want to recommend this game anymore, with this change. i find that very understandable.

  3. seems they succeeded. openIV released an update. that's just awesome. customers showing that they have power, too.

Clearly I was mirroring your statement but from the opposing point of view... Also, directly attacking a companies profits are the only way companies ever take notice of displeased customers.. they completely ignore consumers otherwise. Also it's "our" money that keeps them in business, so they have no right to it, and consumers have every right to deny money to a company behaving in an anti consumer way.

How dares Take Two to do something with the product that I bought ... well I would crack it and still play it the way I wanted :V !
I would still mod it but first HOW dares T2 still ask 60 EUR for a 4 years old port :D ?

You didn't buy the game. You bought a licence to use the product under take two's EULA. YOU agreed to the EULA. YOU gave Take Two the right to do this.

this is more about ethics than legality. if a company dumps their poisonous waste into a river, that is a shitty move - even if the government allows them to do that.

I knew you would say that ... :V, does the EULA specify they can remove mods ?

Also I have a master in CS so I know what you say but for example with a physical copy I can do what the fuck I want, also I live in the EU the laws differ from the rest ... this is why you have refunds because of EU law .

Also if you want to provide services to that region for ex EU, you need to respect the laws of that region so the EULA is not that important , if the content of the EULA is not according to EU laws then that EULA is nullified !

So no they can't do what the want, also with my copy on my hard I can do what I want , I can crack it if I want so no more EULA for me to read and after that I can mod it as hell .

I don't care for their MP :D ... they can kip that !

idk who take two is, but on steam it says rockstar is the dev and publisher.
So if they didn't have a say in the matter then they are retarded, and if they did then they're retarded and guilty.

Also I'm pretty impressed at the power displayed there by the pissed off gamers.
In 24 hours they got hit with 40,000 negative reviews. Ouch.

I've been under a rock, they are banning the mods from all the GTAs or just V??? This is stupid.

Edit: Read the link, now I understand... but why did they targeted this OpenIV mod specifically? Their excuse was that it interfered with online play but the mod was single player, so what was the real reason?

OpenIV doesn't seem to be a mod itself, but rather a kind of mod-manager that lets people get access to the core files and modify things that wouldn't otherwise be changeable. Someone compared it to the Nexus Mod Manager thing for Skyrim, only OpenIV actually lets the mods delve deeper (sorta like how Skyrim's ENB mod required you to use a custom dll / runtime to be able to alter the visuals at a core level). It seems that a cease and desist letter was issued because T2 objected to it.

I glanced over a forum and apparently GTAV patches were getting leaked, which seems related. If the tool was able to delve deep enough then it's possible the tool was letting certain kinds of asshat make cheats with less work, and GTAV has an online game that they sell currency packs for (so not only does cheating wreck the gameplay there, but it also probably makes people less inclined to buy stuff). Some people seem to be convinced that they killed the deeper modding to drive people towards online play. Maybe T2 were overprotective or saw OpenIV as a security concern. Either way, people are pissed off.

I fall in the group that says "It wasn't malicious, but it was real clumsy". Apparently I'm a minority :U

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer! This seems to sum everything pretty nicely, I don't play GTA but this sucks for the guys that used the mod tool, perhaps they should make an OpenV without the "clumsy" features that might be exploited? Well only time will tell

Can anyone ELI5? I mean, I don't have GTAV because I can't afford it but, I remember playing GTA San Andreas, 3 and 4 without any mod and it was fun af, sure mods added more fun but weren't essential...?

Protest reviews are de rigueur in this situation, just look at all the recent RED reviews for any Paradox games, DLCs, etc ever since they increased the prices in certain regions. If that's how people wish to express displeasure, so be it, especially since it may be the only way certain publishers will listen.

GTA modding tool OpenIV receives an update, signaling development will continue

It looks like the massive protest worked and OpenIV is back in business.

Strictly speaking, all mods infringe on the derivative works aspect of copyright law, so the artist (software house) has the right to ban them all.

I would be quite surprised to hear that the majority of people purchased GTA V with the intention of never playing it in its "vanilla" state because they consider it a poor game, with its sole redeeming feature being a gateway to access some fantastic unauthorised mods.
