Favorite kind of strategy game?
I love strategy in a way that my ability to suck at strategy games doesn't really stop me all that much from enjoying them.

From the given subgenres in the poll, I like them in the following order:
I just began playing EU4 again btw, after playing other games since November 2015. Incredible how great they developed the game with the latest 3 expansions. Couldn't stop playing till 3 AM in the last 2 nights.

I must admit that it feels a bit easy to blob though. Okay, with Muscovy I didn't really pick the greatest challenge for my comeback. Yet I feel that it was too easy to grow my vassals, to mess with PLC's attempt to wreck the Teutonic Order by supporting them with Condottieri etc.
That can only mean that PDX will ruin the fun and balancing with the very next expansion. ;)

It's been terrible to blob as a christian country since they introduced Agressive expansion! I'd love a way to get achievements without using that shitty mechanic. Poor France can't even blob anymore
Never used condottieri because I don't have Mare Nostrum T_T

I love turn-based strategy games! I'll play Civ V with a friend later, please feel free to join us. :)

I think it would be a good idea to giveaway the new dlcs for AOE 2 HD as they are good and cheap in the same time

I still play Red Alert 2 to this day (the Mental Omega mod). Excellent game and the peak of the old C&C formula.
Generals (Zero Hour) was also great, but I haven't played it in a while.
Dawn of War (Dark Crusade) is also a great game, really should play it again.
Age of Empires, Warcraft and Starcraft are, however, quite boring; generally slow, small-scale and "unrealistic". Very frustrating, too.
One of my favorite Strategy series, though, is very obscure: Swarm Assault and Swarm Rampage. Would love to see a modern iteration in that series.

Civ V is the game with the second amount of hours I have on steam (only beaten by Darkest Dungeon). I'm still far from having all achievements for Civ V (though I have close to all of the more common ones and some of the rare ones, especially the ones for the civs I like to play most), so I come back from time to time.
As you, I would like to play more of my strategy games. I have some in my backlog that really need playing this year. The one thing making it difficult to play is that most of them require you first learning it and then improving your play, and so they take time. I remember the times when I only could afford one hardcopy of a game every couple of months (and things like steam didn't exist). Those were good times for great strategy games - I didn't mind if it took me a lot of time to learn it, and if the game lasted for long, all the better.

I'm also trying to do something about my backlog (take a look at BLAEO, that might help like it did to me), but strategy games are my gaming passion and I have not been playing them as much as I'd like to.
I've created this topic not only to get people to talk about, but to get them playing those games, so if you want to play, I'd love to have more friends on steam that play strategy games.

If you have between 20-30 years like me, you probably played a bunch of strategy games. The early 90s was the golden age of the genre. Games like AoE, Warcraft, Warhammer, HoMM, Civ, etc would came out every year with big campaigns. Any 90s kid probably spent hundred of hours playing those titles and their scenarios (dota, asymmetrical 4x1s and TDs just to name a few) online.
I was talking to a friend that looking at the strategy tag on steam right now is just sad. A bunch of titles that although great have no resemblance to strategy at all, like the thousand of management/simulation games included. The real strategy games are old/hd remakes or new indie titles that could hit mainstream status.
With that said, in 2016 CIV 6 was the top game by revenue. Paradox got 5 games in the top 100 most sold game on steam. Starcraft and TW: Warhammer sold really well, AoE2HD had thousands of people playing every day and to top it all of, in 2017 for the first time in I don't even know how many year, 2 AAA RTS (DoW3/Halo Wars 2) will be released!
One of my new year's resolution is to play more strategy games and get more people to do the same. Therefore, I'll be doing some strategy games giveaways! I'm not sure for how long nor how many. Don't expect any CIV6 copies, I'm not that rich. xD
To start, here's a copy of one of my favorite games of all time. I spent countless hours playing this game.(I actually prefer the GOG + HD patch version instead of this HD remake on steam, but we're on steamgifts and no GOGgifts yet).
I'd also like to find more people to play those games. If you want to play more of those kind of games, let's get together to do some multiplayer matches! (should I put this thread on the let's play together category?)
Ok, after some encouragement, I've decided to create a group focused on strategy games, so we can play together, share news and create GAs for strategy games. Tell me if you want an invite!
LVL 1 - HoMM 3 HD
TL,DR: Strategy games GAs! 1 GA/month. January GA ending in less than a week. Let's see if we can break a 1000 entries for a strategy game!
