Favorite kind of strategy game?
I play Company of Heroes 2, not a lot of online RTS to play

This is actually a blight affecting multiple genres, the distinction between them has become quite blurry, especially in the RPG genre. You go to the Steam store and you filter by tag and what's the first "RPG" game there? DOTA 2.... a MOBA -.-"
I'm also in that generation that grew up in the boom of strategy and jrpgs(can't even tell you how many hours I spent on Dune 2000, Civ II, Final Fantasy titles, Legend of Mana, C&C:RA, Settlers, Breath of Fire, Populous: The Beginning(omg Populous <3 ) and other such titles). It's certainly nostalgic just talking about them :P
However for some reason in recent years I don't miss them that much. I'm a huge sucker for management games and for rpg-esque exploration/crawler games like Darkest Dungeon and Renowned Explorers or tactical rpgs like the recent XCOMs, Shadowrun(which was where my vote went btw) etc and I feel there's a fair share of those around. However a great strategy game like Civ and such is always very addicting :P
Great GA choice btw, I won't enter since I'd only do it from nostalgia and it will just end up being played for a couple hours before being virtually shelved again(spent insane hours on it back in it's day!) but it's a true masterpiece

Some tags are so full of games that shouldn't be there that it's unbelievable. I also started playing more other genres like mobas, simulation, management and stuff, but I really wanna get back to strategy and convert some folks back on the way. :D
It's time to end this "dead genre" talk.

I am in love with king's bounty series now. Turned based strategy games are the best!

I like strategy games quite a bit. They (at least the good ones) are not just some easy, mindless games but actually make you think and have consequences if you do something wrong (I started a new Civ 6 game today, made a slight mistake at the beginning, because of which I had to fight off constant barbarian attacks for 100 turns. Needless to say that once I finally destroyed them, I was quite a bit behind the other factions).
My current favorite games on steam include several strategy games, like Crusader Kings 2, Civ 6, XCOM 2 and my all time favorite game series, Total War (Warhammer is truly amazing).

Where the heck is the option for "potato strategy games?"

Didn't you know? Potatoes are quite common in strategy games. Look at Age of Potato Empires, for example. Nations, going to war over potatoes. And Starcraft. Did you know that those crystals come from potatoes? And then there's Civilization VI. What do you think the people in those cities are eating? That's right! Potatoes!
But I will excuse your gross negligence, this time. D

Potatoes never die, they just take sprout and grow a new plant.

Oh... HOMM III took a lot of my time... and nights... I couldn't get into HOMM IV and HOMM V was nice but too candy sweet for me. As for other strategy games - it depends. I don't have much time so I choose more casual games nowadays. But HOMM III still has a spot in my heart. Thank you!

My fave is Turn-Based Tactics. Those Tactics game introduced me to it. All those gameboy games. Then FE got me addicted to them.
Strategy games are all awesome.
Playing Mordheim right now, very interesting.

I can still remember one of my first RTS was an obscure title called Krush, Kill N Destroy. I can also remember when I went to a family reunion and my parents were driving through the bush, seeing the battles unfold in the paddocks around me. And then I fell in love with Red Alert 2, until I we got a new computer and I couldnt find the code.

I don't play that much with strategy games than I used to; however my first owned game was Imperium Galactica II and my first truly finished game was WH40k: DoW... so yeah, I have to say it's one of my favourite gametype.

there is no real answer to the poll. I started out loving Civ and Col, then Master of Orion and Dune II, then HoMM, then Total War, then EUIII followed by CKII and more recently X-Com EU. It just depends on (a) what I'm in the mood for, and (b) what the most recent phenomenal game is.

Used to play lots of strategy games, but now kinda suck at them and don't have that much time for them. :/
Thanks for a giveaway. Friends used to play this one a lot, but I didn't because it was in Russian language. That didn't stopped me from trying, but still didn't got into it. Would like to try to play it properly.

If you have between 20-30 years like me, you probably played a bunch of strategy games. The early 90s was the golden age of the genre. Games like AoE, Warcraft, Warhammer, HoMM, Civ, etc would came out every year with big campaigns. Any 90s kid probably spent hundred of hours playing those titles and their scenarios (dota, asymmetrical 4x1s and TDs just to name a few) online.
I was talking to a friend that looking at the strategy tag on steam right now is just sad. A bunch of titles that although great have no resemblance to strategy at all, like the thousand of management/simulation games included. The real strategy games are old/hd remakes or new indie titles that could hit mainstream status.
With that said, in 2016 CIV 6 was the top game by revenue. Paradox got 5 games in the top 100 most sold game on steam. Starcraft and TW: Warhammer sold really well, AoE2HD had thousands of people playing every day and to top it all of, in 2017 for the first time in I don't even know how many year, 2 AAA RTS (DoW3/Halo Wars 2) will be released!
One of my new year's resolution is to play more strategy games and get more people to do the same. Therefore, I'll be doing some strategy games giveaways! I'm not sure for how long nor how many. Don't expect any CIV6 copies, I'm not that rich. xD
To start, here's a copy of one of my favorite games of all time. I spent countless hours playing this game.(I actually prefer the GOG + HD patch version instead of this HD remake on steam, but we're on steamgifts and no GOGgifts yet).
I'd also like to find more people to play those games. If you want to play more of those kind of games, let's get together to do some multiplayer matches! (should I put this thread on the let's play together category?)
Ok, after some encouragement, I've decided to create a group focused on strategy games, so we can play together, share news and create GAs for strategy games. Tell me if you want an invite!
LVL 1 - HoMM 3 HD
TL,DR: Strategy games GAs! 1 GA/month. January GA ending in less than a week. Let's see if we can break a 1000 entries for a strategy game!
