Hello there,

i preordered GTA V and i was wondering: Do you think this was a good decision?
I can still cancel it but i would first need a reason why :P

Because there are no pre-order bonuses and they wont run out of digital copies...?

^This. There is ZERO reason to ever pre-order a game if there is no discount and no pre-order bonuses.

well, there is one: if a game is not yet region locked (but is likely to get a lock later), you can buy the cheap pre-order from a russian and activate it. this might save you half the price. i bought preorders for this exact reason a few times now, and moneywise it paid off.

Can't they just send you a Russian copy later? You pre-ordered a Russian copy, shouldn't they send you a Russian key? What if the keys are not accessible outside of Russia? I am highly interested in this is why I ask, but it seems... too good to be true.

i am not talking about keys, but about steam gifts. and there are cases where a game gets available for preorder, but is not region locked yet. so you can buy it pretty cheap from a russian trader and activate it. you can save a lot of money with this. of course you never know for sure, if it gets region locked later. and in very, very rare occasions it can happen that they retroactively lock your game, even if you already activated it on your account.

last time i did that, i bought south park super-cheap. some weeks later it got the region lock. my copy was already activated and runs fine.

to answer your question: if a key or gift is locked (not accessible outside russia), then avoid it at all costs. i would never even bother activating/playing locked games with VPN, no matter how much money i could save.

How would you buy a Russian copy on Steam, then? It seems like you typically only get keys from other sites that sells Russian content, which was why I had the assumption you were getting keys.

You need to have duel citizenship from the country in question, or one of the other dueling nations or clubs. Then you submit a request to purchase the item at the desired regional price. If all the paper work is in order Valve will send along a registered duelist to the requested venue, along with a recorder to document that it is a fair proceeding and the results. If you kill the duelist you get the item at the price you requested. Pretty standard stuff really, I think most of us just kind of figured it out.

Well normally that is true but these days I have seen several titles run out of keys or reach it's license expiration and be made unavailable for sale. That is highly unlikely to happen anytime soon with a massive title like this but I'm just saying that technically it is possible. There is no proper reason to pre-order this though, especially after the GTA4 port.

Never pre-order, never!

Especially with rockstar pc games. GTA IV was a really bad port. I would wait for some reviews before buying.

TB said it perfectly

i agree with u canaan never preorder a game because you may not like it wait till release and check the gameplay on youtube this way u save money + even if they did give weapons cars 1 more mission still preordering the game is not a option.

After GTA IV incident, i think the same. I'll wait until many users say "wow, that's great, very well ported game" since i'm not in a hurry.

You don't need to wait for users. TB will talk about the quality of the port if he's given a press copy. If he doesn't get a press copy, be worried about why.

Better to wait until it gets fully patched (because every new game requires patches) , and a nice 20%+ discount after a few months.

I played it on my old PC and it did lag quite a bit even after all the patches. I just got used to it. Maybe on the new one it would run faster, will install it once I get to replaying it again.

Mine has always worked fine. Plus the modding community for GTA is amazing. I run it fine with higher gfx mods and etc, always have. Maybe get a better rig?? From what I can tell GTAV will be great, and from their screw ups on console they reimbursed us all with free money and stuff for our time wasted. Seems to me that I can trust Rockstar.

If we're talking only about PC version, then it's bad decision: it might turn out to require one GeForce Titan per 10 FPS.

In general: Unless you got it for around $30 it's also a bad decision, as other places might have it in much better prices.

Also worth noting: Max Payne 3 was on maybe-even -50% sale 2 months after it was released, during Summer Sale.
Same thing might happen during Winter Sale, seeing how R* might notice not all PC gamers are stupid enough to pay $60 for one year old game that was already spoiled long and wide over Internet, so there's not much that can surprise players.

I think they will not have such big problems like in GTA IV. At this time they were new to the Rage-Engine.
They had no problems in Max Payne 3, and i think they won't have (or only little) in GTA V.

Preorder if you're rich and want it now. Wait for it to go on sale if you're poor or a cheapass. Simple as that. It'll be a long while before it hits 66-75% though. The preorders and early purchases, if done from legitimate retailers and not those cd-key scam stores, support the devs/publishers. So definitely do that if that's your thing.

TotalBiscuit's thoughts:

Gentle reminder, do not preorder videogames, particularly GTA5. Remember GTA4s port, let us check it out first, that's the medias job.

Basically, he's saying don't preorder. Wait till the media has looked at the quality of the port then, if you like what they are saying about the quality of the port, buy it on day one.

What? I was just talking about TB in general, he tends to bash/hate some great games imo (probably when he has a bad day/doesn't understand the mechanics). I still tend to check him out from time to time though. And about not preordering games he's correct, that's the smart move to do (even tho I'll preorder it anyway, just like I did with The Witcher 3). :p

That's why I said some. Most of the time I also agree with him but sometimes he's just rather clueless/doesn't make sense. Wouldn't be the first time I see him blame a game for something while it's just him not understanding something (which is somehow to be expected if you tend to get a first impression of most genres out there, can't like/know everything) :p

Care to give us some examples of specific games ?

Though TB does admit that tastes are subjective. Which is why he scores on game reviews.

Plus him being wrong about some games doesn't mean he's wrong about preorders.

Well, the game itself is great and definitely worth buying, but after the PC disaster with GTA IV I'd be somewhat cautious.

I think it's a dumb decision. Rockstar have a history of treating pc ports badly.

GTA IV yup but Max Payne 3 wasn't that bad to be honest (maybe from other Rockstar studio, no idea who did the ports). It's one of the better/best ones actually (it did had a few small issues on launch tho).

MP3 is incomparable to GTA games. One is small in size and nearly-completely scripted, other is much bigger in size, with tons of random things.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yet they both ran on the same shitty hardware (old gen consoles) so it doesn't really matter, one got ported properly while one was garbage. Why would an open world be a reason to deliver a shitty port when 10 year outdated hardware could run it just as good, if not better as a very high end pc? They got lazy/cheap and just rushed it, sure it takes longer to polish/optimize it than MP3 but that aint a valid reason to do so :p

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You still can't say "MP3 was great, so GTA5 will be great", because they are completely different games that are build in completely different way. And shitty console hardware is why they were able to make such great stuff with it - they know it better then themselves, so they know exactly how to code every single bit of it.
And you can't do that on PC, on one hand thanks to various hardware, on the other thanks to MS who was cock-blocking PC development with practically forcing people to use DirectX 9 (as that's what X360 is mostly using, more or less).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Wtf, where did I say that? Don't put words in my mouth.. I only said that MP3 (their latest PC game) wasn't a bad port, which was a reply to someone said that Rockstar has a history of bad PC ports. Which means, or it was another studio or they are finally taking it serious (which would be a good sign for GTA V).

If it runs like shit on hardware thats like 5x better then something is wrong, there isn't a single excuse for it. We've had more open world ports without (or with less anyway) performance issues, if they wouldn't have cared than MP3 would have been just as good 'nearly' unplayable.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, you didn't said those words. You're only saying "yes, R made bad ports, but MP3 wasn't one", forgetting MP3 is different game. And seeing how R is back to shitting on PC gamers (they knew they will make port for at least 6 months, as that's how long GTA 5 has database entry on Steam) I wouldn't expect them to do anything than another shitty port.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Different game or not, a port is a port.

And obviously they didn't announce it ages ago, did you see the sales? It was the best move they could have done, consolepeople buy a shitty version to serve as beta testers and now they will buy it again because 'woah graphics'. They did the same to the people on the currentgen consoles though.

and check that 'piracy' thread here, then you'll know why we get stuff later. Hard to blame them if you see how many people think.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A port is a port, but port of small game can be made by monkeys while port of big game requires skill :)

Yes, they didn't announce it and got money. But they also showed how big priority PC version is.

since you are clearly an experienced game developer, please tell us, great master, where exactly the key differences are between optimizing a game with small levels and an open world game?

i am a developer (although not a game developer), and i don't think that optimization of a graphics engine for a specific platform is that much more work for an open world game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Closed world - less stuff happens so less stuff that need to be optimized, less-to-none random-effect.

Open world - more stuff, different AI and scripting, "random" effect, tons of little stuff happening in same time.

In Max Payne 3 you can stand in one place and nothing will happen. In Open-World game, stand on street and you will be only thing that won't move. But hardware will need to generate new NPCs, move them from A to B, generate weather and tons of other stuff.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

All of that 'open world stuff' happens on the 'oldgen' too, if it runs on such hardware there isn't any reason to have issues on way stronger hardware.

Also the main reason why stuff dissapears if you turn around a corner, it's made to be an open world so it only renders the small part you are in. Plus... if you compare the details/texture quality of GTA and MP...

Yes, stronger hardware.

the cpu has more to do in an open world game. the graphics are usually much simpler though. games like mp3 usually have higher quality graphics effects than open world games. in an open world game, what you need the most is cpu power and memory. pc's have plenty of both. and the cpu's of the nextgen consoles are much more similar to pc hardware. so optimization might even be less nesseccary now.
