Same here. I managed to avoid using Steam until I got the Orange Box and I was forced to install Steam. Though for a very long time, I used Steam ONLY for the Orange Box games and still refused to use it for anything else.
Obviously, my stance on that matter has changed significantly over the last couple of years.

Same with me. Bought retail HL2 copy in store, was annoyed that I had to install this "Steam" service to play the game.

Me too! Ah, the old days....when there was only one game in my Steam library!

Yeah, I bought the Orange Box, just because Portal wasn't available otherwise. I actually played Narbacular Drop before the team got assimilated by Valve. For years my library only contained the Orange Box titles, as I wasn't confident about Steam to last. Well, I stopped worrying...

my 10yrs of service badge makes me think it was Counterstrike/HL2.

I made my original account for the free copy of Portal, and would occasionally add more free games and the bundle games I was gifted to it. Didn't even buy a Steam game myself until November 2012.

I read somewhere that Team Fortress 2 was free-to-play, so I decided to play it.

To play RE5 on the PC, before GFWL rendered it unusable forever.
Also, I've never owned a game console myself, only a PC, so PC gaming was the only available choice to me. The massive discounts on Steam make it all the more worthwhile -- especially compared to retail shops.

In addition to a console, I would love to own an arcade cabinet someday.
If I remembered correctly, in 2001 a closing local arcade (Toy Town?) were selling pinball machines and arcades for a reasonable amount. One of my friends said that he bought a Street Fighter Alpha 2 machine there for around $200, cheaply since the joysticks were misused. And another bought an old pinball machine -he went ape over it- for around $20. I missed the place very much to this day; they had a laser tag arena, arcade & pinball machines, and a cafeteria for cheap eats. The only game I remembered playing was Street Fighter Alpha 2 (aka SFA2), it was the only decent game they had. The rest were poor, no elaboration required-- I cannot recall them.
I still wonder if the SFA2 cabinet I played, was the same one bought by my friend. I believe the arcade only ever had one of those cabinets. I can imagine the befuddled look on my friend's chauffeur, when ordered to load a large arcade cabinet into the trunk of their 4x4 vehicle lol!

I was on another forum when they said that Alien Swarm was free. I didn't know what it was but I heard "free" so I thought it was a limited time thing. I made my account as quick as possible, looked it up, and started to download it. Halfway through, I gave up(since my internet back then downloaded only 78KB/s) and I went back to RuneScape until I heard about Humble THQ Bundle. XD

Convenience, discounts (compared to my local retail prices) and several friends who had been using it for years and recommending it.
