I been trying to run all my giveaways as 1 hour, so that there would usually be under 500 people in the giveaway, or sometimes under 300. I like to see people have a good chance of winning.

People who are active on the site, and keep hitting their browser refresh button, will catch these fast giveaways and join them. While people who are less active on the site, will not even catch the 1 hour giveaways. So I think the 1 hour giveaways support the most active people on the site, and give something to the most active members.

I like to hear other people's opinions on the subject. What do other people here think about 1 hour giveaways?

Pro tip: Make them private, post link to giveaway on a thread with 10/20/30 etc minutes to go. You should get fewer entries

Leechers are happy. People who really, really want to win your game, will join giveaway even with 3000 entries, while people who want to win anything, just to have it will shark for lowest entries raffles only.

It will still recieve more than 200 enteries. 200$ CV is nothing now, people get it after wasting like 10$.

One-hour giveaways keep me coming back throughout the day. I like the increased odds for short giveaways, but I never know what one-hour giveaways I've missed, so it doesn't matter.

Since there's no incentive to have lots of entries into your giveaway, I don't really see a reason to have one open for a very long time. Perhaps if its something that is rarely given away, so you could give lots of people a shot.

I like them. I gives amuck better chance at winning. Sure, I'll miss some while I'm asleep, but that's part of the Steamgifts game, you can't enter every giveaway.

1 Hour Giveaways are always wanted. It gives people a higher chance in winning since the amount of people in it are less.

What happens if you wait on the giveaway creating page for 55 minutes, and then click on the final whatever it's called button?

Or, hmm, you could make a private giveaway and post the link here when it's almost over?

Forum giveaways are the best, and I suck at puzzles, but they are still the best! 1 Hour giveaways are also nice.

I don't like them very much. I mean they are great point sinks for games from bundle sales that i've missed or haven't enough money because there are so much of them that nobody is gonna cry if they missed some of them. But 1 hour giveaways for more rare games is kinda dickish move. I understand that you want games to active users but first we need to agree on the definition of "active". For me refreshing (and hammering servers) every 5 minutes 24/7 and lokking for those few games that you always wanted to play isnt beeing active - its a symptom of mental disorder. Most "active" people here pops in few times(or at least once) a day and that should grant them enough chances to pick games. Don't forget that normal people sleeps, goes to school, have social life and/or are otherwise occupied and can't saccrifice their life for Steamgifts. That and factoring timezones (you go back from work/school, post giveaway for an hour and 90% of europeans sleeps at that time - assuming you are from 'Murica, you get the gist) should be enough reason from refraing of posting 1hour giveaways because the idea of SG is to give games in fair and just manner (hence the whole point system and random picking) and that is just not it. And to be fair the whole joy of this site is to have a chance of having a chance to win the game, not giving games to bunch of hardcore no-lifes and obssesive caring for highest win chance.
TL;DR: 1 Hour Giveaways are usually a bad move and are not really fair. 1Day giveaways should be more than enough for public giveaways.

How could publicly giving away a rare game to a random stranger, no matter what the entry period, be considered a "dickish move"?

This is a poor choise of words on my behalf perhaps - i'm not talking about an act of giving games to strangers but but i've tried 1hour publics (and believe or not entry period matters) and it made me thinking. In a system when you can give a game to anybody (in a certain group or community)you can do it in many ways. You can make restricted giveaway (forum/istoohard,group,private whatever) when you have every right and mean given by service/system to limit your number of entrants/maximaze chance of winning etc. But when you create a public giveaway when there is little(point) to none limits or should i say selection of entrants be kind and decent enough to give everyone interested at least reasonable chance of getting this particular game in this particular giveaway(even considering contribution value - if you make Skyrim public giveaway for CV 10000$+ one would assume you want to get interested as much people as possible who met this requirement and not show middle finger to those who cant "pickup the phone" at the moment). 1 hour Skyrim/B Infinite/whatever public giveaway sure is thrilling and when posted in right time can yield huge win chance but still that doesn't mean everyone should post them - just because a loyal and valuable SG user who lives across the globe and is sleeping/working/in school/whatever atm. will probably get squat.
You don't see for example developers giveaway posted for 1 hour. Why not? It's so great!
It's like when you give away a game you don't think at all of those who could and who would want recieve it. This is what is twisted in this world... when act of giving itself is considered enough and is more important than a caring and considering thought that should follow afterwards, for those who should recieve it.

Of course there is a possibility that something is wrong with me because when I read comments in this topic the only thing im thinking is "GOD! You are giving the games WRONG."

I think everyone has to start out (unless you already know people in high places in groups) with giving out games in public, and winning games thru public giveaways.

Most people agree with me about the reasons I given in this thread about why I thought 1 hour giveaways had advantages over running a 1 week or longer giveaway. I don't think you are screwing people over who are sleeping or working. I think if enough people run one hour giveaways, then there will always be some for people to join. If enough people run them, then there will always be a one hour giveaway available for you to join when you can find the time to sign on for a few minutes to check out the giveaways.

It isn't really reasonable to expect people to join giveaways with 9,000+ entrants, and if it starts to turn out that every giveaway becomes like that, then it would take a year to win just 1 game. The 1 hour giveaways provide a safety valve, so people have high odd giveaways mixed in with the extremely low odd giveaways on the sight. I like how the system is now. It is pretty balanced.

i prefer 1 hour giveaways, i know you could miss some of them, but atleast you can have better probability of winning on the ones you catch up (without mentioning that you dont enter them ALL). i usually make my giveaways for 1 hour or max 2

Prefer the short giveaways. I never feel like I might win in the ones that have thousands of entries.

I love em and would love to see even shorter ones. It's probably gonna happen in my opinion, not only it will improve odds but it will redistribute the "desire traffic", witch itself will improve odds again. Something like 10-15-20-25-30 min etc. giveaways. Will need some slight point adjustments or separate rules, but what do it know? I joined yesterday, haha!

Again, I'm in the minority when this topic comes up. All giveaways should be 1 day minimum to give fair chances to everyone, not just those who are in a better timezone.
By making them 1h, yes you give better chances to those that see them, but you also don't give anything to the others. People shouldn't be rewarded for lurking the site, refreshing every few seconds.

If enough people run 1 hour giveaways, then there will always be a 1 hour giveaway, during the time of the day when you are online and can join the giveaways.

And the people who are lurking on the site, as you put it, are also the ones who pop into the forum and chat rooms, and post messages on the forums and talk with people, in between the time they are spending lurking on the site. I think a lot of the most active forum users, are the ones who keep checking the site for 1 hour giveaways. While waiting to check again in 15 minutes or so, they are busy posting a message on the forums. So the 1 hour giveaways, actually encourages people to be on the site, and to do stuff on the site that is useful to the site and to the community.

I don't mind them... The owner of giveaway has the right to decide, it's his giveaway after all.

And there's also bigger chance to win for those that do enter.

I've done quick giveaways and longer giveaways. I think they both have their benefits ~ admittedly, I really get frustrated when a giveaway is longer than 2 weeks though. I get so impatient xD

I love 1-hour giveaways. Buy a $0.25 DLC, set start date to 4 weeks away, and end time to 1 hour after start time, then set $1k contrib. WOOHOO!

Alternatively, start a private 1-hour giveaway for something worthwhile that begins now, then post the link 5 minutes before its over.
