Description

Welcome to the twenty fourth week of the 52 weeks of Christmas!!! What is the 52 weeks of Christmas you might ask? I will be giving away a new game each week for 52 week. To make things more fun, I will be asking a new question each week also. I hope that by doing this I may brighten someones week. I even create a group on Steam where you can follow every giveaway(link at the bottom).I hope you will have as much fun as I do with this.

New Week, New Questions

Q1:1. Defiance is a MMO which also have a TV show tie in. From a dev preview I saw a couple of month back, it seems like some events in the game could have repercussion in the TV show. I remember one of the devs talking about how popular factions in the game could be mentioned in the TV show. This is beyond cool if done properly. What do you think about games tie in (not just to movies)? What about games in the same universe and different franchises affecting each other?

Q2:2. Tomb Raider is the latest game to be released on multiplatform and have time exclusive dlc. What is your take on time exclusive restriction for games and time exclusive on dlcs? What is your thought on dlcs (story or cosmetic) that are never released on pc?

You don't have to answer both.

Weeks of Christmas

God bless. :)

I enjoy dlc if it actually adds to the game. Bonus points if it is cheap or included with the game. I am not too impressed with time exclusive deals. Sure, it gives people more incentive to buy it as soon as it is released, but it leaves many people out in the process.

1) Would be cool if it really let you impact the story in that way in terms of being a step forward for games, but I really don't care for that cheap sci fi series.
2) Never heard of that, but you can at least mod something in on PC.

I have a number of issues w/ DLC and the way we have it shoved in our faces, but overall, it really does suck when we're not even offered it on PC. Some DLC is useless (time and money on both parts) but some of it does add to the experience and extends gameplay in a positive manner and it can be unfair when we don't get the option to enjoy this as well.

I dnt think its worth the extra cost for most of the dlc that gets released for preorders, esp when the game cost so much more in my country. Was sad to see the 80usd price on standard edition of TR, so ill jst wait for it to be on sale some where else.

Q2

I thought that this was something different at first. Something in the lines of only being able to buy them for a few months after the game was released. That would have been stupid.

We have had time exclusive DLCs before. Skyrim on 360 comes to mind. I'm not bothered by it personally, but it is in no way good for the consumers. It just serves to fuel console wars, which I suspect is what Microsoft wants. I just find it unlikely that someone will buy a console over the other just because it has more exclusive DLCs. On the other hand I find it hard to believe that there are people who would still buy SimCity, but I was just proven wrong by that.

I touched on this a couple of months ago. I'm against content being exclusive on one platform, unless it can only be made on that system. Currently only the Wii (U) can say that it can offer something that the others can't. I imagine it doesn't take too much to port content when you already have the base game ported. Are there any examples of platform exclusive DLC that can't be justified? I can't think of any now.

Q1

The first thing that comes to mind are, like you said, movie tie ins. And the associated thought with that is "Oh god what did I do to deserve this!?".

Are there any different franchises affecting each other? I know that the main Command & Conquer series created Red Alert which later developed into its own franchise. And that was the end of it. But other than that I can't think of anything.

The only good example of two games, still in the same franchise, interacting with each other, are Eve Online and Dust 514. If Dust even comes out that is. That interaction could be absolutely brilliant.

A world expanding multiple genres might not be such a great thing. Some people might want to experience it in the genre they started, not liking the other genre. There is the new Metal Gear Solid Revengeance, where players might have been expecting the stealth of Metal Gear but got something different. On the other hand there is Warcraft. If the story could be separated in a way as to allow for multiple story arcs over different genres, with only non essential interactions, then yes.

I can't say about Defiance. I don't think that someone who starts with one of the two will necessarily be attracted to the other. On the other hand I don't know what either are about. Are they trying to create some kind of easport with this?

  1. Only if it fits in the game. and franchise
  2. DLC should be free in-game and unlocked when you passed a specific part of the game...

I don't think DLC means what you think it means.
