I haven't played Awesomenauts myself, but I know people who love it.

Someone already mentioned Torchlight 2, but thought I'd add, it has mods. You need to be careful and make sure you pick ones that are compatible and you both need to have them installed in exact same order to play together, but yeah, that's a good one. Throw my vote in towards Don't Starve Together as well, which is also moddable.
Golf with Friends, it is still in Early Access but more than worth the price as it stands right now and you can get a random round or two here and there to give some variety or while you guys try to decide on a game to play.

NP
Some the first things I tend to look at for a game are:
If something has one or both those, then I tend to be more willing to buy it outright if I can afford it, because that means it has lots more play-ability down the road. Both Tl2 and DST are fun on their own but the mods give it that extra fun kick.
Edit: Oh, GMod, because you can customize the fuck out of that and there are so many games built for it in the workshop. I am sure there are also plenty of servers that are on the more "Friendly" side when it comes to making sure things like blood and such are turned off.

Ibb and Obb. Space farmers. Get 2 games for price of one to play coop. Space Farmers was free before.
Mindless fun and lots of coop chaos = Serious Sam. You can set the blood off so they are replaced with flowers I think. LOL.

I haven't gone through the whole thread but here are some suggestions:
These are some of the games I remember playing in the last few months.
BTW I was also happy to notice that Steam had finally added a filter not only for "Local Co-Op", but now they've added the additional filters "Local Multi-Player", "Shared/Split Screen" which finally allows for a more refined classification by game devs/publishers to inform the consumers on their products.
If you want to know more, don't hesitate to contact me. I play mostly local/online coop or couch coop with people if I play online.

I'd recommend any Lego game created as a good multiplayer game, and all of them are appropriate and not really violent and can be pretty fun to play too. Depending on how old you and your sister are.

New Worms WMD are pretty good. I found a kindergarden kid in myself too because of that.
And it has local coop!
