I have a PC with Windows

And my Laptop will have a dual boot by the end of this week and it will have Linux too so I will have there a Mac and Linux with dual boot between both :) so I don't need to care from games that keep me from switching to Linux

+1 (and I tried Linux too).

Honestly, I don't see the reason to switch to the Penguin unless you're a programmer or a sysadmin (or want to become one) that knows exactly how to make things work and needs this OS for specific purposes. Those who keep blathering about the superiority of Linux while still using it for normal desktop activities only sound nonsense to me, everyone knows that its real purpose is in the command line. Sounds pretty fashionable to say that you hate Microsoft and such, but even if I like - and basically, support - the idea of a free and open OS for everyone, at the moment Windows is just way more usable (especially if you can call yourself a power user).
For most people it's just an ideological matter, I don't care about that crap.

None, because Linux is absolutely terrible(IMHO) and I would never switch to it willingly. The fact that I'm more or less being forced to take one of my exams on Linux and one of the most user-unfriendly interface I've ever had to use just stirs up the fire.

I'm seriously confused why Linux even exists, let alone seeing an examination that needs to be performed on that sorry excuse for an operating system...

Without Linux, there probably won't be ~95% of all your servers.

95%? Jesus Christ, when did this happen?

And almost all super computers run Linux.

Fair enough, but why?

Cause of the CLI. Linux can entirely run just off the CLI while Windows cannot.

You know, Android is technically also Linux. Linux exists and will probably do for a long time because it features non-surpassed adaptability level: it can be power-efficient or real-time or customized for heavy computations or provide any user experience you can think of.

Now that makes me question why Windows exists :P

(extremly oversimplified and not full explanation) Because Microsoft made everyone "addicted" to it by selling windows to schools for pennies and people tend to stay with stuff they'r familiar with

that frase, that you use, the Windows==Drugs analogy... that makes you one of those linux extremist guys
of course, that could be sacarsm, or something like that, and then i would bew wrong, but if you really think people micrososft is an evil company, that sells drug-like-software to people, well, that is being extremist.
and again that is pure assumption for the "microsoft maade everyone addicted ti it..." thing.

Ahhh so you did make wild assumptions after all, good to know :P Seems yoo missed my statement that this is "extremly oversimplified and not full explanation" and it was half serious.
I'm no "extremist" i use both windows and linux... hell id even use AmigaOS if i could get some decent PowerPC computer. Also let me quote your post from 45 mins ago "well... fuck linux"... and im called extremist, cute.

yeah... "fuck linux", and the "windows == drug analogy" are at the same level, but as i say up there, i could be wrong...
and this just give us an answer, and everything is now clear as water, good day.

"windows == drug analogy" since when you can get addicted only to drugs o.O ? If that's the case tea and coffe should be considered drugs. Also i put word addicted in quotation marks since i couldn't find better word for it. I really can't be arsed to continue this silly conversation if you want to write something down so you can have last word and feel better because of it be my guest but for the love of Odin please refrain from making weird assumptions in future, you really can't read peoples mind and you do not know what they think :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So I agree addiction in no way only applies to drugs. Gambling, sex, video games, etc. can also be addicting along with pretty much anything else a human can do to excess.

Though I disagree that if that's the case tea and coffee are drugs because well... They are drugs or at least contain a drug called caffeine which however mild most people consider it(and legal) makes it no less of a drug.

Also while Lezz may not have any good reasons to prefer Windows over Linux I have seen quite a few valid points by others in this thread as to why they do prefer it.

I need Windows for my current job (visual studio to be exact). However I've used ubuntu before that job and only booted windows for gaming. So I will give Steam Linux a try. Actually I'm really happy about it.

I hope, all the Humble Bundle games will deliver their Linux versions to Steam very soon.

All the Humble Bundle games already have Linux ports. You can see it in the download page.

They will. It's just making it work for Steam.

Comment has been collapsed.

I doubt you would need separate keys for the Linux versions since you don't for the Mac versions as far as I know. So any game you own on steam that has a Linux version would most likely be ready from the start without any further purchase or keys needed.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't mean keys.
If the devs don't update the Steam builds, you will not be able to play games on Steam Linux, even if there are Linux gamefiles somewhere around. I don't expect Linux support for old games like UT or Quake either, even though they were naturally supporting the OS back then.

Nothing, the only problem is it can be hard to do. I know cause I have that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How exactly is it hard o.O? You just have to remember to instal Windows 1st then Linux which will automatically add and configure GRUB; 99.9% of time you dont have to do a thing and it's all automated.

Comment has been collapsed.

It's hard especially if you have to shrink your Windows partition to make space. One false move there and it's bye bye for your Windows.

Hard to keep everything on different drives if you have a laptop especially.

You mean you had one big partition "for everything" before you installed Linux? Even so what you stated is again untrue, hell nowadays partitioning program can split it for you automatically during Linux installation. Are you by chance a time traveller? Because from what you wrote i could say you installed Linux in 1999 :P ... and if you are time traveller from 1999, buy yourself Playstation 2 in next year, fantastic investition, you will be able to play this puppy for 8 years straight, and if you'r fan of jrpgs you can't go wrong with it :P

I prefer to do it manually to specify how much space I want to give it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well pretty much everyone does, but as long as you read what's on the screen you can't screw it up. Frankly people that click "Next-Next-Next-Ok" shouldn't try to install their own system :D Everyone else will be fine ;)

From what you wrote i belive you are tech suavy enough so i still can't figure out why you said dual booting is hard. I think we can both agree that "Next-Next-Next-Ok" people should ask someone else to do their system instalation and partitioning :)

Permalink

Sorry if you don't get it, but it can be hard getting your system not to brick.

Permalink

It's not hard as long as you read everything on screen, if your impatient etc then sure it can be "hard", but it's only users fault.

There are some distros that don't have a easy way to install. One such example is Knoppix.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Knoopix is not made for installing it on a hard drive and if the distro that you want to install hasn't got an "easy" installer in your opinion than you should not use that distro.

...What are you talking about? I've personally used a partition manager, and screwed it up myself. I was trying to partition space from my current free space to install a second OS, and i did something wrong or something and my OS got screwed up. Know what happened? Windows was like 'yo dawg, we know you screwed up, give us half an hour and you'll be good to go.' And i was. If it's 'hard' getting your system not to brick, you're probably too noob at computers to be using linux in the first place..>_>

Well, if you want to install Ubuntu, use WUBI. It's foolproof. Next, next, next, restart, wait, blah... Finished. No need to repartition.

here's a thought, if you like linux, get a second internal and swap between linux for other uses and windows/mac for your normal pc use... seems logical right?

You don't need another hard drive, there are versions of Linux that are only 50mb's, like DSL(Damn Small Linux)

Permalink

logic dictates that you would play ALL games on the windows/mac so you dont need to reboot it every game switch... there is no real reason to play games off a linux unless you need it on linux for your work/study in which case then get over it because beggars can be choosers but everyone hates beggars who are choosers...

From what I've heard, only the Steam client and Valve games will be ported over. You'd still have problems playing every other game in your library.

There are many, many, distros of Linux. If you go for Windows, you only have to choose what your PC can handle, e.g. go with 7/8 for newest games and DirectX11, or stay with XP for stability and more friendly attitude toward older rigs.

There are many times I couldn't find drivers for my machines, that I gave up on Linux-systems altogether. Maybe someday I'll try again, but not today.

Which driver? For most PC hardware Linux doesn't need extra Drivers.

linux is a lot better with drivers than it used to be. in the past 3 years i haven't needed to find linux drivers myself, which is actually less work than windows.
