I would recommend taking a look at the 90's Sci-fi series Bablyon 5. It's hardly a hidden gem, in fact it's still quite popular, but I really enjoyed it. Season 1 is so-so, but season 2-4 are great. Season 5 is again just so-so.
War of the Worlds Is another good TV series, and this one often gets overlooked. It's basically X-files before X-files. It is supposed to be a followup to the 1953 movie with the same name (which was so loosely based on the book with the same name that it might as well have been its own thing, as they changed everything), though you don't need to have watched the movie to get the TV-series. Also, only watch Season 1, because Season 2 is beyond awful.

+1 for B5. That seems to be the way of a lot of tv SciFi:Uncertain start, amazing middle, but can't quite stick the landing.

There is a reason for why S5 of B5 was a bit messy, and that was because they never actually intended for it to exist. Or well, to be more precise, B5 was originally intended to be a 5 season series, but when making Season 4, the makers of the series were told that it would be the last season, so all the content that was intended for season 5 was crammed into season 4 (which made Season 4 feel a bit rushed), but then towards the end of Season 4 they were once again told that they would make a 5th season.

I don't know the details about that, but it would not surprise me if that was the case. The spinoff series that was made did not turn out very well in my opinion.

It's set in the same universe but switches focus. A bit like the difference between DS9 and Next Generation. I would still consider it to be "Babylon 5", just not good Babylon 5.

I kinda enjoyed Beyond Belief: Fact or fiction. In every episode, you get 4 or 5 spooky stories. Some of them happened in real life, some of them not. You have to figure out which one happened, which one didn't. It was a pretty cool show IMO.
Also I really enjoyed The Sarah Jane Adventures. It was really good compared to other Cartoon Network cartoons back then.
