That's funny...I never made the connection between SG's obsession with potatoes and Portal 2. I mean, I see it now, but I never made that connection on my own.

Well, let's just say that Portal 2 didn't completely pull the potato thing out of thin air...

it came from mem-boards image-boards - not sure if it appeared first on 4-chan or on 9-gag. Generally was used as a stupid answer to stupid question. Got popular after release of Portal 2, because well - you were carrying a potato in this game :> Not sure why it took so long to port to SG, but was seeing it all over /b/ and 9gag already back in 2011-12.

It isnt just Portal 2 storyline. 2 weeks before Portal 2's release date, bunch of steam games get potato releated update, achievements for new content and big discount. Geting these new achievements or owning all games from this event was giving a potato. There was a potato indicator showing total number of potatoes owned by all stream users. Portal 2 released when we filled that potato indicator, one day before its scheduled release date.

Ppl will be more desperate with "Thanks for Fallout 4" nowdays.

Nice... I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee!

Kind of this except it started before bad rats and was usually done with fortix, which used to be a 1 dollar unbundled game so was given away alot as people knew it was unlikely to get its price reduced so they wouldn't lose their CV. It was used with plenty of other games too.

Also, the villain of the week in the season 2 opener of The Blacklist.

back in the days, everyone wanted skyrim, so a skyrim giveaway caught lot of attention. That led to what ambidot said.
It was also pretty cool to "thanks for skyrim" any random forum post, so people would think there was a hidden skyrim giveaway there :P

The meme originated in this thread, if I'm not mistaken.

Oh wow, that's a great piece of SG history there! Thank you for that! =)
What's also interesting is scanning down the thread I see so FEW familiar names (except for the OP of course).
It's as if...people spend a lot of time in the SG forums...then (work with me here)...decide they don't WANT to anymore (or can't) and then...gradually disappear!

Sorry, no...I meant the OP of the thread that Doshmaku linked (to which I was responding). Spoiler: IgotElbows
But I'm sure you're special, too! =)

I am all caught up now. That makes about a thousand times more sense.

What other people have said plus sometimes sarcasm. If somebody posts a crap discussion it isn't unheard of to say 'Thanks for Skyrim' as if it should have had a decent giveway hidden in it somewhere to make it excusable. Basically it has just become a general purpose meme for all kinds of situations...

As soon as game came out "thanks for Skyrim" became notorious and it's still here up to this day and one of huge reasons is that there was a huge demand for this game and it still is, even though most of actual giveaways are different games, usually it's posted for bit crapier bundle games :) Anyway, thanks for skyrim !

For me it was always, I made a puzzle with no giveaway and when they finished the puzzle and realized it, they said "Thanks for Skyrim" so I assume its a joke in that if you got nothing, you are letting them know you are kinda pissed of for doing work and getting nothing in return but without actually saying it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Everyone wanted that game, but more often than not the giveaway link to Skyrim would lead to Bad Rats instead (and sometimes to Skyrim too if you found the hidden GA). And then of course people would post thanks for Skyrim on threads that potentially could be puzzles, either to joke and mislead people into thinking there is a GA, or let the thread creator know that the thread is lacking a GA, or maybe to hint that there actually is a puzzle. Or there actually was a GA for Skyrim and people wanted to post thanks. So, in general you can never go wrong when you write Thanks for Skyrim

Probably because Skyrim is mostly dead and gone as a game people still buy. It has its active user base as most storyless sandbox games tend to do, but now people want the latest Bethesda GS game… just somehow we skipped the meme-ifying part of "thanks for Fallout 4". Maybe because FO4 had less than enthusiastic reception. (That glorious 54% user score on Metacritic…)

Careful, though. Sometimes, when people create "serious" threads and you go and comment this type of thing (because it's fun and lightens the mood), a mod may not like and suspend you (and everyone else who said the same or a similar thing). It's funny, but use at your own discretion.

It has happened. To me, only once, but that time it wasn't just me. It was a sad thread about a sad thing and a lot of people had said the same thing (thanks for Skyrim), and an angry mod just decided to suspend everyone who said it. When I got back, I checked the thread, and the mod was saying something like yeah, we're a gaming community, but most of all we a are a community. We gotta support people like this one (creator of the thread) and blah blah blah. And I'm sure that wasn't the first nor the last time.

Haha, well, this is reassuring to be honest. I'm not sure we're talking about the same mod here. I don't ever remember who it was (and I couldn't care less about searching for him), but maybe I won't think so hard about saying these things from now on then :)

1) That mod was strict, not abusive.
2) That mod is still part of the staff. [Correction: He is no longer part of staff.]
3) While that mod is no longer as active as the rest of us, users are still expected to show consideration for others.
TL; DR: Don't be a jerk and you should be fine.

Its possible they heard stories about Jade (also nothing more than strict, but you surely know what some suspended people will act like once suspended), and they retired from the site and are no longer a Support member.

Jade is still around, just not in an active capacity. Same with wbarton.

Jade was last here 9 months ago, and has since had his account demoted to Member.
Because of him leaving, I get the honour of being his last win. :P

Last time I checked, he was still Support. Has it really been another year? Sheesh! P
Oh! And thanks for Skyrim! D

Yeah, I found out rereading that link to your first win. No more Support tag for him.

Wbarton had nothing to do with what happened. More to the point, it matters not which mods were involved. One mod just happened to act sooner than the others. Suspensions were not handed out because of a "taboo phrase." They were handed out because some people behaved inappropriately. What should have been learned by those who were suspended is the following:
All of the above are common sense. Most users understand the reasons behind any disciplinary action taken. Occasionally, however, the chastised person is unable to see things from the victim's point of view, and so he or she claims "abuse." Don't believe everything you hear, and don't repeat things that are specious. As they say, "A man has done enough evil if he simply repeats everything he hears."

People like to post that, because when Skyrim came out, it was really popular, yet almost nobody created real GAs for it. Instead they created GAs for other games, but SG cares only about the GA code, which is that 5 character thing. After the slash, you can write anything, and a lot of people created custom GA links like that, which actually led to another game's GA.
It was funny the first few times, but it became pretty generic over the years.
