IS W10 good?
I'm upgrading my home machine once my workplace upgrades their own infrastructure so I can use it on our VPN. Need to be compatible on the odd day I work from home. Should happen before the end of the year.

Using Windows 10, upgraded from WIndows 7.
Windows 10 seems alright, but had to install a 3rd party program called "Classic Shell" to replace the start menu with something similar to the old one.
The new Start Menu, while better than Windows 8, still sucks compared to Windows 7 as they don't allow you to customize it and just forces all the applications there in alphabetical order and you are just stuck.
They keep trying to reinvent the start menu when the old one was pretty close to perfect. If they really wanted to put the Metro Apps thing out, all they would have had to do is keep the Windows 7 Start Menu setup and then just throw the tiles beside that.

I am using windows 10 since the pre release test and i must say that even with one or another incompatibility issue it is a lot lighter for your machine specially if you are coming from win 7 (like i did). it's not perfect (nothing is, specially a windows OS xD ) but you'll get it free, no loss; you can go back anytime you want; just don't forget to backup your archives.

Nope, waiting another couple of months til it's "broken in" more. There's nothing Win10 offers that I can't live without for a couple more months, and I always give a new OS 4-6 months before switching. If anything, I'll image my HTPC and install Win10 there first for a "test drive."
Aside: to the people saying that other companies invade your privacy, so why worry about MS doing it - that's false logic. Complacency and acceptance of a wrong is why it perpetuates. Granted, I'm not terribly concerned about it, just pointing out the poor logic there. ;)

For any gamer the ultimate windows release was Windows 98SE - not only easy to use and configure, especially for LAN parties, it was seriously stable when overclocking.
The lack of CPU support was it's ultimate downfall. Having to download a patch specific for your CPU (for any AMD/Intel/Cyrix CPU with more than 1 core) was a pain in the arse.
Almost every Windows release since then, has had its issues to certain extents with only Vista's large memory support and 7's stability being the only real upgrades in the lot.
With 8's release, even with it's enhanced stability, it got worse with App purchases now a staple in the market place, instead of windows supplying the majority of your needs, they supply some sure, but no longer can you use all the hidden apps that auto worked, you needed to either pay to use them or download a free version that had Ad support.
Windows 10 (Yes I upgraded the day it was rolled out - Had to auto trigger it 12 times), with its DX12 support is supposed to be a game changer. (Pun intended).
Gameplay does seem faster. I am getting better performance. Frame Rates are up even without DX12 support added yet = the latest Mantle API is already active - that's why so many people are getting better rates before any official release games are supported. The mantle for DX12 support is working on the lower DX11 API instructions even though the actual DX12 libraries are not being used.
Having said that though, although my first impressions of 10 were positive, the constant having to download an app to open one of my older files is becoming a very serious negative.
I purchased Office many years ago, then I had to buy an upgrade a few years after that... now neither of them work (Being 16 bit versions that refuse to work in a 64 bit environment unless you spend hours configuring which frankly I just don't have the time for) and I have to either buy a new version of Office again - with so much Bloatware and TSR loaded overheads that any performance increase I would have seen is now gone, purchase an alternative or use a free program that spams me with Ads.
Game developers are slowly catching to the fact that Linux is becoming more popular, and some are now starting to develop for Windows/Mac/Linux, but as yet support really is still limited, mostly because (I think), development is still limited with Linux technology for game engines.
Yet there is light at the end of the tunnel... or at least in a station on the route, maybe it's a junction - we're not quite sure yet... But with Steam OS reportedly getting nearer to release as their Beta is developing, there is more enthusiasm in the market, despite the fact that there is contention over it's proprietary software which seems to be a violation of the Linux "idea" - free open source code.
The question is not whether to upgrade to windows 10, but as stated in previous posts:
It's Microsofts' last Windows. Where do we go from here?
Will Linux be the new King?
Will developers see the writing on the wall and move to embrace Linux? SteamOS?
Is the time ripe for a new OS that cares more about support and using your machine to its' best capabilities as well as User Friendliness than making money from the latest fads of Paid DLC and IN APP Purchases (Remember when Expansions were free? or even just a 1 time cost?)
To answer your question, is it worth going to 10 (paraphrased), then the answer is yes - for the moment - It's a free upgrade and for gaming it's stable and an improvement on 7/8/8.1. For an office or workstation - I wouldn't bother.
But until Game developers start planning for a new OS or settling on a gaming OS - I foresee the market becoming stagnated after the next release of AAA gaming (2-4 years.)
If you have never used Linux before (Like me until earlier this year), it might be time to start checking it out.

well since it's using a keylogger it is a no go for me in this NSA wants you data etc. etc.
And since they are literally forcing you by remind you daily and even download 6gb of data in the background ...
no thx. I'll be waiting for a reasonable offer or an alternative. My Graka is still only dx 10 so who cares about dx12, even 11 (*sob fallout 4)

My computer is from W7 era and it stays with W7. When I buy a new one or do serious upgrade, I'll get W10. In my 20-year experience with Windows I have always used this rule and it never failed me. Few of my friends had serious stability and performance issues when they stuck with XP on their new rigs, and I spent endless hours over my dad's computer when he decided to go from XP to Vista on his old machine - it was a flood of problems.

that gives me hopes. my toaster plays in the same league of yours, even if on the bench. when it decides to start downloading, i'll activate w10 (i have the app showing but says my pc is still waiting for next migration wave). good news is that i have a spare w7 serial for the rollback ;P

I recommend to wait i little bit more for necessary Patches

have it installed on dual boot, it needs more support from third parties yet, depending on your usage you can be fine or have issues.
If you are installing a new system i would consider it after checking that, but if you are already on w7 or w8.1 without issues, i would stay there for at least a few more months. Remember to uninstall the telemetry updates from them, if you mind that.

No, I'm okay with win 7 for now and see no reason to upgrade to win 10 except something force me to do it like a game i really wanted to play and be only playable on win 10 or i see win 10 really has better performance in gaming than win 7 then i will upgrade to 10 but i think i'll stick to 7 for a few more years !

I build a new pc all new parts, installed win7 and than upgraded to win10.
First i thought wth, where is Aero.. okay design choice could have lived with that..but than my hard drives made strange click sounds and sys protocol showed errors..random times, multiples times... so i decided to wipe off my system and clean installed win7 again... and i don't regret it!

People swore to stick with 98SE, but they upgraded to XP. People swore XP was their forever soulmate, but they migrated to Windows 7.
Now people are swearing oath to stick till the end of time with 7, but those hypocrites will upgrade to 10, sooner or later.
I can't comprehend humanity's stupidity.

Not every OS that comes out is good, but MS has built a couple that have been solid and stood the test of time. 98SE, XP, and W7 have all been excellent.
That being said, there was a lot of shit in between each of them.... ME, W2k, Vista, 8/8.1....
