Most overrated anime in terms of rating by users, not popularity.

Gintama (Seen over 140 eps, not funny most of the time or I've got a poor sense of humour)

Evangelion (It's an angel! It's an angel !It's an angel! It's an angel! It's an angel! What the hell is going on?)

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (KILL ALL THOSE BITCHES! Most annoying show ever)

One Piece (I like this anime but the pacing Is wayyyyyyyyyyy too slow, better than fillers though)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Must not sleep)

Fairy Tail (Giant boobs, ripped off characters, what could be more appealing for pre-teens?)

I loved DBZ when I didn't know better (15+ years ago). It was the anime that opened my eyes to all the other amazing series out there. Without it I don't think I would have been able to waste all that time I had with recent anime series.

Well, DB is much better than DBZ in my opinion, it is a bit overrated because of nostalgia in most cases. Still, I think it's much better shounen than Naruto, Bleach, One Piece or Fairy Tail. At least the manga. The anime is too stretched out.

Cowboy Bebop. Overrated. I have no idea why this is rated so highly among so many people. Sure there are a few good episodes and the music is nice but it as an anime is utter crap.

As a person that thinks it's a masterpiece, I love the way it shows the world and it's world itself, the music, and the feel you get when you watch it. But there obviously are people who're not gonna like it, since it's episodic, and it's in space. And there's no moe and high school.

I think Code Geass is somewhat overrated, even though I did love it...
Also, Naruto; I do watch it (or read, actually :P but it applies for the anime as well), but it is so liked and succesful, far more than some of my favourite animes which I believe are far better than Naruto ever was...

Heheh. In regards to Code Geass, for you it wouldn't be overrated then.

As for Naruto, yeah god, too overrated, but I think it eventually died down after all the hype of the first season.

I really wanted to like Evangelion, I really did. A girl I liked was in love with the series and story, so clearly I had alterior motives for trying to get into it. All I really got was an incredibly obtuse overarching plot with some mildly interesting characters thrown in. It ahd that feeling of someone calling something art, not because it is well made or even thought provoking, but because it is hard to understand and they don't want to seem like a total idiot.

The best kind of anime is the kind that can stand by itself without using the anime part as a crutch. The only anime like this is Ghibli's.

K-On is really overrated. Same goes for Azumanga, I mean these jokes are barely funny. Just cute girls. And not really that cute, the only moment in these two anime that I've gone "d'aaaaw" - Chiyo in penguin costume

Also, Shingeki no Kyojin. It's good, but not as good al many people conider it to be. The last episode had TERRIBLE animation problems and the episode was clearly unfinished, even shitty shows with low budget are somehow finished before they air. Also, 3 previous episodes were boring. Blind fans can't see the flaws of that series, it's already #8 on MAL top anime list, even though it didn't finish airing yet.

Madoka - I find it juuuust a little bit overrated, as it was great, but many people consider it to be NGE of modern anime, which is a bit too much.

One Piece, Bleach and Naruto - those 3 were pretty nice at the beginning, but later they're getting worse and worse.

Exactly- you can't write off an artistic medium itself as overrated. That being said, it's possible for it to be considered as overrated if using it guarantees your work will be successful, no matter how terrible they actually are.

Naruto, Sword Art Online

List:

  • SAO (Sword Art Online) - Way too much hype, story wasn't as interesting as I thought it'd be but that might have been the problem. I gave it too high of an expectation from what I heard, and was disappointed with what I saw.
  • Angel Beats - I didn't find the story sad, and I didn't even see how it was so interesting. Seemed really dull.
  • Death Note - Good, but really overrated
  • Naruto, One Piece, Bleach - With the exception of Bleach, I found One Piece and Naruto interesting to watch, but it's annoying when people say they watch anime and the first thing they say are one of these three.
  • Dragon Ball Z - Watch Dragon Ball
  • Lucky Star - The jokes are very paper thin and cliche.
  • K-ON - I liked K-ON, but it's overrated. When most people think of anime they usually point to characters in K-ON, which kinda makes me sad.
  • Clannad - Sad story, but it doesn't define romance or slice of life. A lot of people seem to think it does though.
  • School Days, Higurashi - They're very good, but similar to Death Note. They don't define the horror genre and many people like to point fingers to these two. (Well I suppose School Days can't really be considered horror anyways).

Haven't seen yet, but hoping they won't be overrated:

  • Attack on Titan
  • To Aru Kagaku no Railgun
  • Hellsing
  • Kaicho wa Maid-sama!

Believe me, Attack on Titan is really overrated. The characters are kinda simple, the music is good. The story is good enough to keep you interested most of time, but sometimes the episodes are kinda boring. The animation is sometimes left unfinished, so still shots are quite often. In the last episode, some scenes were slowed down, in one scene particles were odd, purple color. Studio is overwhelmed by the amount of work they need to put into animating the series. If the animation is finished though, it's really amazing. So it's kinda like artstyle in Hunter x Hunter manga. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. At least the next episode will be recap, so we can expect a quality growth in later episodes. I hope BD releases will be looking how they were supposed to.

I've heard first season of Railgun was average, but Railgun S is much better. Didn't watch them yet, so I hope they are not overrated.

Oh, and I totally agree with your opinion about DN. It's overrated. It was really good up to some point in the story, it became kinda less entertaining later. It's still good, but not as good as some say it is.

Comment has been collapsed.

Really like your definition on Attack on Titan. Especially since you mentioned the "art style" of Hunter x Hunter which made me cringe sometimes at what the artist did. I will still watch it simply because it seems to be what's "in" in the anime industry/showbiz. I feel as though your description of it has a lot of truth, so I will watch with caution.

Railgun is something I've been meaning to watch, my ass has just been too lazy to bother.

And yeah I consider Death Note an "anime entry" for beginners. They'll think it's one of the most amazing anime ever created, but if they venture into others (Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, and others that are quite similar) they'll understand that Death Note is just at the tipping point. A good anime, but overused by many.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, at least Death Note is good "entry level" anime, unlike Fairy Tail or Naruto. Also, people who start watching anime now tend to watch only new series(~2006+), so they are really popular and that means they will be overrated.
As for "battle of wits" anime like DN, I prefer Kaiji, Akagi and One Outs much more. Especially Kaiji. Because the main hero isn't perfect. He makes mistakes and his plans are flawed. That's what I loved about it.

Well according to google: (overrating) overestimate: a calculation that results in an estimate that is too high.

A lot of these things are opinion based. Angel Beats seemed way too dramatic to me, I like to see more depth in my character rather than unneeded drama. Perhaps I didn't understand the meaning behind Angel Beats, but it never appealed to me. (I am in no way attacking you, just trying to explain why I thought it was overrated).

FLCL

Sword Art Online

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Dragonball

Naruto

Bleach

One Piece

Fairy Tail

Angel Beats

Highschool of the Dead

Gintama

Pokemon

Digimon

Code Geass

Guilty Crown

My Neighbor Totoro

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Tsukihime... Oops, my mistake, this anime doesn't exist.

Also, to people complaining Attack on Titan is overrated because the animation is going to shit: AoT is that studio's first ever anime, and they are so low on animators to make the series that they had to advertise on twitter essentially saying "If you can animate anything, we'll hire you." They have more than enough budget, but they don't have enough people to make use of the budget. That's why they're doing a recap episode next week: so they can catch up in the animation quality. and even if they can't catch up, the series will be fully fixed for when the BDs and DVDs come out.

It's not that I don't like Totoro, that's not what this thread is about: it's about whether it's overrated or not. A lot of people seem to treat Totoro as the best anime movie ever made, and it's not. and I don't mind Evangelion, but it's only slightly above average (I haven't seen rebuild yet, I'm waiting for 4.0 to come out before i start watching them). FLCL, I just did not like at all, and don't understand the hype for it.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is quite depressing. You are literally the first person I've ever seen that dislikes it.

One Piece is very interesting, but I only had issues with pacing in the first 250~ episodes (and filler but I skip that). Now that I'm in the Enies Lobby Arc (263 to around 320) I seriously enjoy every second of it.

Elfen Lied is the first one that comes to my mind. Everyone seems to love it and put the show in their top x lists. I've watched it twice, once when it first aired and thought it was bad, so then decided to rewatch it a year or so ago as I thought I may have missed something, but nope, still bad.

Also, all the people harping on about animation problems with Shingeki no Kyojin - animation quality (to a certain degree) shouldn't really affect if a show "overrated" or not, you're misusing the word if you think that's the case.

You might want to check the Elfen lied manga, it fill the holes in the anime. And provides an ending, that too.

I don't read any mangas and so I judge and rate anime purely by the show themselves. A good show shouldn't require someone to read the manga to fill in any holes, particularly one that is highly rated.

I just felt the entire show was akin to a B movie, flaunting naked girls and gore at every possibility in amidst a flimsy plot. For me, if a plot is bad and the characters are bad, no amount of fanservice will rectify that.
