I'm gonna hijack your post and say: Lara Croft and the Guardian of light had a suprisingly enjoyable coop for two. And it's cheap too. I would recommend that, because I was very surprised how much the two players has to cooperate and synchronize their thinking to beat the game. Resident Evil 5 is really great, Lost Planet 2 was one big load of fun with friends, in my opinion it's one of the most underrated coop games. Payday and Sanctum can be fun with friends, but not for much long. Whole campaing of Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third can be played by two players. It don't have any pure coop activities ( besides reviving ) but it's still fun and decent game, especially the third SR is awesome. I hope you find my post useful. Happy gaming ;)

I do own Payday but my boyfriend doesn't, but I haven't played it yet. I'm having a hard time telling what kind of game it actually is. How does it play exactly? More like an FPS?
Edit: I guess I could just play it to find out. I'm too lazy though; it's easier to make other people tell me.

Yes, it's a FPS. Think L4D but robbing banks and killing cops instead of zombies.
Amazon's got a deal right now where $15 nets you 4 copies if you're interested.

And $5 for one copy! I just picked it up, thanks for letting me know about the Amazon deal!

Haha yes its a FPS and similar to Left 4 Dead, just replace Zombies with Cops. There are even special cops with some unique abilities. Also it has a leveling system with 3 possible branches that you can develop that give different benefits/perks and new weapons. Also the missions have random events, so sometimes when you get a code to a diamond vault it may work and you will get instant access or it may not work and you will have to search for a guy that knows the code and other things like that.

Shoot many robots is a very fun game for co op in my opinion but I have only played the xbox trail version. I love the saints row games, you should play those in co op. Saints row 2 is $15 on steam but saints row the third will most likely cost around $40.

looks like you answered your own question ☺
Rage has limited co-op that looks promising but haven't tried it yet and it's currently $30 but I'm expecting a nice price with the Summer sales (fingers crossed)
It's liked about as much as it's hated, but Spiral Knights is at least worth a look for the price (free) with a group, it is quite fun - unless you hate it, then it probably blows
F1 2011 lets you co-op a full season as team-mates - sorry, probably turned off the path there

Thanks for that! I'm kind of amazed I didn't catch it before.

I've played both of those games, and they were both pretty meh in my opinion. I have friends who swear by both though.

I assure you that I am thoroughly excited for Borderlands 2.
Also thank you!

Some games others have not mentioned yet.
Dead Island (melee based FPS), Jamestown (Local only Top Down shooter), Lara Croft Guardian of Light (great co-op twin stick shooter), Dungeon Defenders (co-op action-rpg / Tower Defense), Titan Quest (Diablo-ish action/rpg). Also, you might as well preorder Torchlight 2, as its going to be pretty awesome.

Saints Row: The Third is great fun in co-op (if you like the humour, it's very "down-to-earth" to use polite words). Me and my girlfriend loved most of it, except for some stupid things with the AI. GamersGate have a -50% off promotion at the moment, though I don't know how long it will last.
I haven't played Saints Row 2, but I've heard equally good stuff about it.

I hear Sven is an excellent coop, but haven't played it meself.

I guess that covers pretty much everything I can think of. I hope this helps!
PS: Saints Row: The Third may be very fun indeed, but it gets old kind of fast and has a couple of lag issues while playing on LAN (at least I had them with my brother), so I'm not sure I would recommend it. By the way, Saints Row 2 is rather good, but it's a lousy port and some things in the game feel broken.

He refuses to play things without me, actually, because probably unlike you, I have a very good relationship. Thanks for the advice, but go be sexist in some other thread, honey.

If you enjoy isometric style RPGs, then I recommend getting Sacred. It's pretty awesome, and it's only $10. BUT, I believe you'll only be able to play through LAN, since the servers for the game don't exist anymore. I mean, I guess you could try to use Hamachi if you weren't going to be playing in the same place, but it will probably lag like crazy.
Other games I recommend:
Quake II
Rainbow Six Vegas
Neverwinter Nights Complete
Dungeon Siege Complete I-III
And if you're into MMOs;
Guild Wars Trilogy
Dungeons & Dragons Online (F2P)

My boyfriend and I need a new co-op game to play, so I was wondering if I could get some recommendations.
I'd prefer games we can get on Steam or online elsewhere, as well as things under $20 if possible.
Here are other games we've played that we really like: Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Borderlands, Alien Swarm, Dota 2, Killing Floor, Terraria, Counter-Strike: Source, Portal 2, Minecraft, various SourceMods
Also I've been considering getting Bunch of Heroes or Shoot Many Robots. If anyone here has played them and wants to offer advice on whether to get them or not, that would be awesome too.
Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!
