..and I just smoked one.
care to share your best tips to finally quitting?

EDIT (after having read 99%):
So, thanks, guys.
You helped me out a great deal, here :)
Interestingly enough, while reading and commenting all posts, I haven't had a cig :D

I will consider everything you guys suggested, but probably will buy an e-cig starter kit from a local shop.
I guess, for now, I need the habit more than the nicotine, so a 0mg nicotine e-cig seems like a good solution for the transition.
In a couple of weeks, or so do I hope, I'll be finally clean. Clean forever :)

Thanks, guys.
I'll leave this thread open for you guys to be able to discuss the topic in more detail, if wanted :)

EDIT 2 (2 weeks after OP):
Yup, I'm pretty much a non-smoker now :)
It's been over a week that I ordered and recieved a ego-c starter kit and I LOVE it :)

Thank you folks for making my life MUCH better :) :)

Switch to American Spirits.

I'm not really sure why.. but I think I've heard ppl say that there's no nicotine or something in them? :P
Like I said, I've got almost no knowledge of "AS", but I've switched brands a couple of times, already.. always trying to get lower dosages of toxic substances :P

I'm now on 0.1mg nicotine, 1mg condensates and 1mg CO per cig - but as I said in a couple of other posts, it's the habit that I need!

They have nicotine, it's just the natural amount, no additives. You'll notice the difference when you smoke one because it tastes like air. Had nic fits for a few days after switching but kept myself from just smoking more (continued to smoke a pack a day). Once my body got used to it, I wasn't smoking for the nicotine anymore. I'm down to 3 cigarettes a day by smoking half a Spirit during my usual times.

Okay, well, let that be my last ressort, then :P
I definitely would like to cut off the highest amount possible of pollutants etc.

It's smoking the way mother nature intended it. No glass is always a plus.

American Spirit might be the slightly lesser evil. But it's still smoking. It's still harmful. American Spirit themselves used bold for the word 'not' in these quotes:
"Organic tobacco does NOT mean a safer cigarette."
"No additives in our tobacco does NOT mean a safer cigarette."

I wouldn't recommend to use ecigs. Nicotine isn't the real problem when trying to quit (the molecule itself is out of the body after a couple of days, thus losing the need of more nicotine), but the gesture and that's the same as smoking a real cig. You may get hooked to ecigs for the next 10 years, i guess you couldn't really say that you quit.

Man oh man :D
Here I was, having thread almost every post of this thread, thinking "go for e-cig".
I'm pretty convinced that getting off of normal cigarettes is a big, necessary step.
So, my point being that I'm addicted not to disgusting emissions from a burning plant but to the habit of smoking, I've decided to at least cut off the pollutants :P

And, if time lets me, I'm going to get rid of the habit itself some other time, when my life is a little more .. "secure" :)

I know it's the dumbest thing I've ever done and I don't understand it..
I'm not sure if you can follow, but I dearly want to stop smoking :O

See if you can find a sort of a support group of others who are trying to quit smoking. It helps if you have others to help you out. Tell your friends and family you are trying to quit. Just throwing out some ideas. I never smoked and don't plan to start anytime soon. But I know a person who was a drug addict for over 15 years. He finally managed to quit with the help of a support group. If he can do that, quitting smoking should be no problem :)

Thanks! I appreciate your input, but I don't think I need group therapy for it.
I'd rather need a method to "survive" the first 1-4 days, especially the first 24 hours :P

Try eliminating your source of cigarettes. Destroy/sell your stash, be sure not to buy new ones. Stay away of your friends who smoke (if they do so) and you'll soon be free.

I have done that, in fact :D
Well, pretty much... there's one pack lying around in some corner from which I've got the one I was smoking earlier.
It's tempting, yes, but I don't see why I should avoid smoking friends (ha ha) - that just doesn't make sense to me :P

Find a substitute. There are two main methods of doing this, though first you must understand that there are two sides to your addiction: Firstly you are physically addicted to nicotine (you have little receptors in your body that need to be satisfied) and secondly there is your habit (bored? reach for a cig. Time to get up? wheres your pack. Stressed? go for a smoke etc). The habit can be retrained before you quit smoking, so then when you do actually quit you will only have to deal with the physical side of it (see method two below).

EITHER (for quitting immediately): find something to eat (you know, putting it in your mouth and all helps), something that you like and lasts about as long as a cigarette. Chewing gum lasts too long, gummibears don't, you can try various other confectionery things too. Now whenever you crave a cigarette, eat whatever you chose.

OR (for quitting in like 2 months): find something to eat just like in the option above, and eat a bit of every time you smoke. If you forget to too often it won't work, so take your chosen food with you everywhere you go (and store it with your ciggies too). Then, when your mind is really used to eating your special food every time you smoke, quit buying cigarettes. When you start craving one, you will find yourself automatically reaching for your special food, and while it won't stop the physical craving your mind will be satisfied that you are sticking to your habit and you will feel a little bit better. Nicotine patches work on the same principal, you kick the habit and then break the addiction at two different times.

Or just buy one of those ecigs, you get your nicotine with (supposedly) no health risks.

Or just don't bother quitting.

DUDE!
That must be the most creative advice I've gotten on this topic - EVER :P
And I'm not saying that in a bad way! I could totally see myself "retraining" the habit - don't you think this could work together with switching to e-cig? ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haha that's all just from experience of years of trying to quit. You could definitely retrain the habit while on nothing more than ecigs, it would be a bit expensive though given how much ecigs are worth. Good luck with quitting though, ultimately what you will need most of all is willpower... Also finish your pack first and empty your wallet and never carry around more cash than you absolutely need to so you can't just buy a pack while your out and about, it's a lot easier when you actually don't have any left or the option of buying more.

Well I smoked for some time and like ptsfthfll, one day I just told myself "No more cigarettes" and that was that. Instead of a cigarette, try getting some kind of placebo to fake the act of smoking (eg: pen, stylus, lollipop).

I bought the e-cig just 3 days ago, and i'm not smoking a real sigarette from 3 days!
I use a juice with 9 mg of nicotine, but i'm not smoking the paper and the other shit inside a real sigarette.
Try it is worth it, and is really cheap! i bought 2 e-cigs 5 bottles of juice and 1 atomizer for just 67€

I quit smoking a year and a half ago, and Im glad I did. Theres not one day that I wish i was still smoking. I occasionally miss the good feeling from smoking one, but in reality its not as good as I remember it. I did slip up after like 6 months, i had 2 cigerettes, I felt terrible, like I had failed, but I bit the bullet and continued on with quitting. The 2 cigarettes in reality did nothing, no worse then sitting next to smokers on a night out. You shouldnt give up, its a hard trip but after a couple of weeks it starts getting easier, within 3 months you barely think of them. It may pop into your mind for what feels like a long time, in reality its a matter of a minute or so. At this point even thinking of smoking doesnt interest me. I hope you can find the will power to continue quitting.

Tell yourself you want to quit. If you feel like you want to smoke, just dont do it!
It will be a very hard time, but you just need to believe in yourself.

As others before me, I also suggest electronic cigarettes. In my case they are an alternative to tobacco. But I had no trouble switching and I don't cough anymore. If your goal is cessation I'd say try ecigs with 0mg nicotine liquid in a non-tobacco flavor. There are disposable ecigs that equal about a pack or two of usage. One of those may be good for starters.

Another thing: go to your doctor and tell him/her that you want your blood tested.
I did this and found out my blood was too thick, due to smoking. That didn't make me quit but I'm about to switch to e-cigs and then I'll just quit, eventually. Really, health is numero uno and money is just irrelevant. Who cares about money when they are bedsick/dead?

My thoughts exactly, to a degree :P
I kinda helps when a MD tells you that "you'd rather stop or you'll die in a couple of hours".
Even though you KNOW it, a doctor telling you is somehow the ... verdict..
I don't know if you can follow, but you'll know what I mean :D
