"Steam Syndrome"

(Proposed name; propose a better name if you have one)

.

A tongue-in-cheek name for this thing so many of us are afflicted with:

The compulsion, impulse, drive, or urge to do the following despite having more games than you could ever play in your available time...
.

You may have Steam Syndrome if:

  • You buy or trade for ever more Steam games despite having more than you could play

  • You buy every 75+% off Steam sale and bundle of games that comes available, even if they're kinda lame

  • You grow your Steam library for its own satisfaction

  • You pass on non-Steam deals no matter how good they are, yelling Y U NO STEAM?

  • You keep your "Activate a Product on Steam..." window open 24/7 for key drops (Leires)

  • You check SteamGifts constantly even away from home (school/class, work, on a trip, etc.) (abcxyz91)

  • You Pre-Order AAA titles you don't play (wykydvamp)

  • You have more Traders on your Friends List than actual friends

  • You have more untouched games in your library than played games (thedoctor1ko)

  • You spend more time on SteamGifts than Steam (Tuffdog)

  • You are in possession of more TF2 keys than hours played (emotionengine)

  • You maintain spreadsheets of all the keys and Gift URLs you may or may not activate at some point (emotionengine)

  • You curb the rest of your daily internet usage so that you have enough bandwidth to download new games (caerbannog)

  • Your hard drive can only hold a small fraction of your collection at any given time (emotionengine)

  • The first thing you check when you turn on your computer is the Steam 'Daily Deal' (MrFredgrim)

  • You already own every game key you try to Ninja (Osiris11235)

  • Your game library has more value than your monthly income (Exinoz22)

  • Your huge Library no longer satisfies, so you move on building your Inventory

  • ?

? What are some other symptoms and descriptions?

You might have Steam Syndrome if you _____ (reply = filling in the blank)

Best lines will be added to the OP w/credits.

Those symptoms, other than the last of the three, of course, are a problem I have with many other systems. Hundreds of games.

  • Willing to try every genre, even ones you suck at.

This, definitely this. I regularly ask myself why I bought a game that I know I'll be terrible at playing lol.

Well, I made an account in 2010 for some free2play games featured on Steam, but ever since I got my job (maybe the workplace was of fault also cause Steam was highly popular there) , lets just say that from a somewhat crappy salary my library went from 0$ worth to 470$. Considering all the games I gave away to friends plus mine, my library would've been somewhere near 1k $.

As for the syndrome, yeah, I'm trying hard to stop myself from buying SP games, and consider only getting what games offer Mutliplayer platform.

Playing SP ones pirated that is? ;p

Uh. I was humorously referring to a practice of buying only MP games, the better protected ones and just stealing the SP ones. Don't freak out ;)

You should try it other way around. Singleplayer you can actually beat and move on, while multiplayer will magnetize you indefinitely.

You might have steam syndrome if you lurk on a website that gives away free steam games and notice that someone dropped their keys.

You also might have Ninja Syndrome if you keep your Activate Steam Key window open 24/7.

You have steam syndrume just because you buy more steam games? Thats far to vague mate and becomes redundant along with "Buy every game thats 75% off" because of "to grow one's library...". Also, who spends more time looking for games to buy, then playing games? I understand looking for deals, but just for games to buy in excess of checking daily deals? I dont buy it.

As a side note, I typically only buy PC games, and I would say most, if not all, of those are tied to steam.

Lighten up, Francis. It's all cheeky and you took it far more seriously than intended.

It makes more 'sense' if you read it with the qualifier "compulsion" to acquire more games than you could ever play in your available time, but again, this is just making fun of ourselves here, not a call to arms to "buy" into.

I'm tempted to take a photo of the hundreds of console games I have never played. Call it addiction if you will (I certainly do), some people just buy more even when they don't need them.

To buy or trade for ever more Steam games. Eh..25%
To buy every 75% off Steam sale and bundle of games that comes available, even if they're kinda lame. 75%
To grow one's Steam library for its own sake, even passing on non-Steam deals while yelling Y U NO STEAM? 100%
Spend more time seeking MOAR GAMES than you do playing the ones you have 100%
Keep your "Activate a Product on Steam..." window open 24/7 for key drops (Leires) 0%
