Its a trick of the light; he has khaki pants on bwhaha

Nope! I am about to add a 2nd picture momentarily

Hint 2: Although the game has "second-person elements" its a major gimmick of the the game

You're right!
Haha, no way! That's ironic! I had so much fun with this game and I love the concept to this day

The graphics were also top-notch. I remember being very impressed by the quality of the real-time cutscenes.
It must be admitted that from the very beginning to the end there were a lot of games on the Gamecube whose creators pushed Nintendo hardware to its limit (F-Zero GX, Twilight Princess, Rogue Squadron II and III, Metroid Prime 2, Star Fox Adventures etc.).

One of the Gex games? That chessboard floor and green finger look familiar lol

Oh man, I've seen those pumpkins before! It's Jersey Devil right? I never played the full game but I played the demo from a Playstation Underground disc haha

Not sure I remember this one, but that first picture really had me on the fence as to if it was an older game.
It looks pixelated, but also crisply rendered. Wasn't sure it if was just a retro filter on a newer game.

Haha dang, spot on, you're right again. This was my go to game whenever I went to the arcade ahaha

Sorry, with "recent" I'm referring to the last 3 to 4 games you guys posted screenshots of in this thread.
I grew up with Nintendo's first consoles only and some time later PC games. So I didn't pay any attention to PS exclusive games at that time. Or any other console.
Comment has been collapsed.
The game I want to guess I can't remember the name of, so I shall say Breath of the Wild?
Also to me 2017 is still quite recent, but 7 years ago might not be to some.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know why, but I suspect it's some kind of "German RPG" (that's what I call Piranha Bytes games and all other titles, not necessarily of German production, modeled on Gothics and sequels). Maybe the next screenshot will clarify something for me.
Comment has been collapsed.
Wikipedia says it was made by a french studio, close enough :D
This game is from an era where pre-rendered graphics were quite common. Like the Age of Empires or early Diablo series.
Added a second screenshot.
Edit: my mistake. It was made by a studio in the United Kingdom, but published by a french company. Still close, though.
Comment has been collapsed.
I started second guessing myself as I thought the second picture looked too crisp.
Then you mentioned the French publisher, and this was indeed Infogrames.
Always thought it was a JRPG.

Along the right lines, but this game seems to be going for truly murky environments.

I would say even that game is better lit and more colourful than this.

No, but thanks a lot for a new game for my Wishlist :))
PS: Will add a second imagine in the morning, and maybe a second clue.

It's Sea Salt.
I got into this game a bit when it was on Game Pass. Then it disappeared from the service and I didn't have a chance to finish it because it rarely went on sale and the full price was a bit discouraging.
Now I see that sometimes you can buy it for about 4 bucks, so maybe one day I'll be tempted.

Taking a decent screenshot from this game in such a way that it would not be recognized by image search engines turned out to be quite a feat.
HINT #1: The mystery game was developed in Japan.
HINT #2: Although this is one of those "only on" games, its exclusivity is not entirely exclusive. ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡° )
Completely useless hint: This game is in the top five of my favorite titles for the platform on which it was released.
Comment has been collapsed.
I give up on trying to beat the searches sometimes, because you have to crop it so tight it becomes unrecognisable even if you know the game.
I am getting JRPG vibes so I shall just guess: Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch™ Remastered?
Comment has been collapsed.
Neither.
I thought that in the era of the unwavering popularity of all these gloomy From Soft games, the Japanese spin-offs of Wizardry could undergo a real revival of the series. Of course, it would have to be a large AAA production, made by an experienced dev team.
Does anyone even have exclusive rights to the Wizardy series these days? Because it seems like for the last ten years or so, Wizardry games have been released by ten different publishers.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, I don't know.
Might be one group has rights to the old games, and one has the IP rights to make new games.
Edit
Apparently Sir-tech owns some of it, and Drecom owns some of it.
https://wizardry.fandom.com/wiki/Wizardry_(franchise)
Comment has been collapsed.
The copyright issue for Wizardry seems to be very convoluted. From what you can read on the Internet, Drecom has some of the rights to the IP, but it is quite possible that only for the needs of mobile devices (I was not able to determine this in such a short time). There is also Sir-Tech, which apparently can also manage copyrights, but not as a publisher, but as a trademark leaser. Thus, after 2020, GameSpark (Wizardry: The Five Ordeals) and Digital Eclipse (Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord) acquired the one-time right to publish a game in the series.
Interestingly, in 2020, Namco Bandai and Marvelous/Xseed were interested in buying the IP. Ultimately, the deal was closed by Drecom, a company that had a very good year financially at the time (the last three years were much, much worse for them), but overall they were far from top-league players.

omg, I literally just found it by reverse image searching one of the screenshots and I can't believe I, of all people, didnt know what game this was. But I'm sorry, I'm not going to end this one right here :D
SURELY someone else must have played this game...
Edit: i hid a hint somewhere in this text~

So now I know what the game is, I am curious what was the hidden hint?
Comment has been collapsed.
"[...] I, of all people, didn't know what game this was."
If you scroll up just a bit, you see me mentioning Castlevania for the mystery game just before this one... lol
It was maybe a bit far-fetched, but who ever paid attention should have known ¯_(ツ)_/¯

No idea about the symbols, but the character portraits/colors would have given it right away to me. I didn't even remember that sign in your 2nd screenshot correctly, but it was a huge clue nevertheless. Thx again for mentioning that game, it really was awesome! :D
Comment has been collapsed.
The second screenshot was very recognizable - I knew it would be one of the 3D Ninja Gaiden games or Nioh. The guy with the halberd from the first image didn't suit me in Ninja Gaiden, so the choice was quite obvious. However, I am surprised that this is Nioh 2, because the view in the second picture looks quite blocky and there is pretty "flat" fog in the background.
Comment has been collapsed.
Maybe it's this nostalgic phenomenon where you remember a game to have had better graphics and then, years later, you play that again only to realize what the f you're looking at. Or these rocks appear so blocky because I was using the photo mode and manually added artificial lighting which made these edges visibly cleaner. Also, I didn't check if I even had all graphics settings to maximum.
Comment has been collapsed.
This is one of those titles about which gamers have divided opinions.
I am one of those who really likes the game, despite its undeniable flaws. Because what's not to like? There's fast-paced action, more than decent music, huge bosses, and often brilliantly hillarious art designs.
HINT #1: It was developed by the quite famous European dev studio.
HINT #2: The game was very, very strongly promoted in the industry press (at the time it was released, it was hard not to see advertisements in the most popular gaming magazines).
Comment has been collapsed.
Same here. But the graphics kind of remind me of some MS-DOS games back then. (Maybe not, the colors are so vibrant)
The blocky heads in the second screenshot look like they're from a PS1 game, though.
About these characters... is that one of those tropes where one of them is like the evil genius and the other one is supposed to be the doofus?
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, it's that two-headed creature stereotype.
The authors of the game must have been very pleased with the design, because this purple wonder often appeared on screenshots in press materials promoting the game (especially in Europe).
By the way, I added two hints.
Comment has been collapsed.
Lost Vikings/"Norse By Norse West", ggez. Back when Blizzard wasn't a Belchfart. I'll pass, because I'm currently quite ill (had to undergo internal surgery on stomach recently) and still recovering, so I don't have much free time or any energy to do this regularly.
P.S.
Olaf rules. Also: I 100%'d both LV and LV 2 way back in the 90's, though I never had a chance to play SNES' originals. It was Sega MegaDrive/Genesis and Saturn (which are actually superior versions, as they have more stages and kind-of a multiplayer-like mode).
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know what you're smoking there, but you'd better stop puffing on that reefer. Just because these characters are popular, memetic, and classic, and had many cameos in several other games, doesn't make it any less "Lost Vikings". That particular art is from Rock & Roll Racing or Blackthorne, I can presume, though I haven't played those two games for decades, so I don't remember well anymore. Olaf was definitely a secret unlockable playable character in Rock & Roll Racing, that I'm 100% sure of. Though I don't remember his portrait/art/sprites from that. It's sure as hell not from HoTS, because that had drastically different char designs.
Comment has been collapsed.
No need to be rude and throwing weird attacks(?) around, you answered incorrectly at first.
It is Olaf's picture from Rock & Roll Racing, but as the picture wasn't taken from The Lost VIkings series, it was incorrect answer.
Just as how Cloud appears in Ehrgeiz, but that doesn't mean that the game Final Fantasy VII, and many other games exist that has characters of other franchises. I assume you know about a few, as there are numerous.
I heard about sore losers, but sore winners are... a thing apparently.
So to clarify it, yes, it is Rock & Roll Racing. Which is not The Lost Vikings to the best of my knowledge :D

I never played any of the Lost Viking games, but they were the first things to pop in my head from seeing that sprite due to playing HotS haha

I didnt say he did, but I am just stating what happened with me bwhahha; its gotta be because I do not know of any other green vikings in games 😅

My initial thought was Tom Clancy's EndWar, but it set too late.

Correct! (SNES version, to be totally accurate, but it would be hard to confuse it with the GB version)
Its startup scene with characters pushing in the menu options is incredibly charming

Thx for growing my wishlist :)
But no its not that. I'll add a clue later today with a second photo as well

Technically you are wrong about the game, but since you named the sequel or prequel(idk tbh since I haven't played that yet), I'm still going to tell you congratulations :D
It was Lust from Darkness

The second picture and clue have left me stumped.
So can I ask, is the clue to the name of the game, or the content of the game?
Edit
If the guess above which seems to fit is right, would like to know where second pic is from. Road seems quite pixelated compared to screens from that game.
Comment has been collapsed.
The content and someone already kind of guessed the game. I pixelated both imagines so that it couldn't be reversed search using search engines :D
As for the road itself its from the part where you get to the mansion, immediately after you leave your home.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, right.
Was thinking it an older game or one that was going for an older look, like Crow Country.
Comment has been collapsed.
I was thinking this game was something to do with Hideo Kojima, but I was getting it confused with Snatcher.

I can see where you are coming from with that guess, but no.
This game isn't under water, though the name might lead you to believe it is.

II made a bit of a fool of myself, I admit it without any hesitation.
To justify myself, I will only write that I played Yoshi's Story the least of the entire series. In fact, I didn't even finish it.
When the game was released, of course, I bought it and was absolutely furious that the character controls were only assigned to the analog stick. On the one hand, I understood that Nintendo was strongly focusing on analog controls at that time and that in Yoshi's Story analog control allows for more precise aiming with the crosshair, but on the other hand, it would make my head explote why the creators didn't include the option to move Yoshi with the d-pad. Instead, d-pad only serves to stupidly scale the fruit chart on the screen. Madness!
Apart from the fact that due to certain disabilities, I have some problems with the mobility of my thumbs and the analogue in the N64 was not my greatest ally (although I generally played games in a 3D environment well).
Ultimately, I sold the game pretty quickly and never went back to it. Perhaps I'll do it now, when the analog sticks are shorter, better placed, less slippery and simply more convenient (after all, the Nintendo Switch Online with Expansion Pack, which I have already purchased, will be useful for something).
Comment has been collapsed.
It's fine, don't worry :D
I bet everyone agrees with us when we say the N64 had one of the weirdest controller's in the entire gaming history. Who came up with that design choice? As if the average human has 3 hands to hold the controller correctly. And speaking about the control stick, I always thought the stick was very hard to move, like, in comparison to the PSOne's controller, you'd gain muscles on your thumb by playing N64 lol...
I also remember the sticks weren't quite accurate so when playing 3D games like Mario 64 or Zelda, I struggled a bit with directions. All the better when the GameCube finally came out and we were astonished with the gameplay/controllers. That was a huge leap, imo.

This seems to be a unique racing game where you can pick up different items/"vehicles" on the go. But even so, I can't seem to find any name to such a concept. The graphics kind of remind me of NfS Underground (2), but I'm 100% sure it's not that.
I may need another screenshot. :/

I might be 100% wrong, but my guesses are Midnight Club or Midtown Madness

Is it one of the following?
I don't remember any of them having english words in the world's lore, though. But I swear I've played this game before.

What is a boogaloo?
The Electric Boogaloo is a dance style that became meme-ified to denote crazy sequels, as popularized by the 1984 film Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. While we are not break dance battling here, it is kind of like a screenshot battle and hence, the "screenshot boogaloo".
