I really envy the people who can play those games.

I really want to play some of them, yet i have zero fun because of i am generally busy cleaning my pants...

Horror movies are ok, but games are totally impossible for me. Atmospheric ones are even worse than games with jump scares. Fuck...

Rant over.

edit. Well, i can't resist :D :D :D

I have to finish a game when i start it, so Amnesia here i come :D

More, I think. She's really bad at haunted houses... actually, let me ask her.

You could probably play Soma on "safe mode" where the monsters don't bother you. I just finished it and I wish that I had done that, because they just slow the game down and are quite annoying. Game is quite enjoyable just for the story and concepts. I don't play many horror games - most I've tried seem boring, silly and/or gratuitous. The only one I ever enjoyed was Alien Isolation - but you should probably avoid it.

I personally don't consume hardly any horror or zombie entertainment just because they became less interesting to me these last several years than other themes or non-themes in entertainment whether its games, movies, TV, etc. Perhaps in my mind there's only so many ways to skin and zombify a cat.

Jump scares and dark environments have put me off modern horror games entirely. I simply don't enjoy them. I much prefer surreal psychological horror games that depict a normal world gone horribly awry such as Sanitarium, Harvester and The Dark Eye. Games that are calmly, peaceably unsettling.

to me, there's a big difference between different horror-type games.
Left4Dead, Zombie Army, etc. has zombies, but really it's just waves of targets coming at you.
Then there's Resident Evil 4 and F.E.A.R., which are more action games with horror elements. Sure, there are some scary moments, they're few and far between. (which makes them very effective, but also tolerable)
Then you've got Outlast with its gazillion jump scares. If done right, you're constantly on edge waiting for the next thing to pop out. (when not done right, it just feels repetitive and unoriginal)
And lastly there's atmospheric horror like Amnesia. Playing Amnesia with headphones on in the dark, I don't think I can manage half an hour before being too creeped to continue.

Oh, and there's also creepy adventure games and puzzle games. Because you're playing at your own pace, it's not really scary. In that case, I enjoy the world-building.

Then do not play horror games in VR !

For me it is not a big problem to play horror games, but in VR it is much more crazy, I was shocked that much, that I imagined, that it can make heart attack when I will be older... so now I am avoiding horror games in VR.

I never quite understood the desire to play screamy, jump scare-laden horror games, but I like a good narrative piece that leans on the creepy side. Of course, having a preference for happy endings and a complete intolerance for gore does rather limit the options...

I have the same problem. I can take a horror movie anytime (even though I don't enjoy the genre). But scary games are not my thing. I get too anxious.

I played Resident Evil 2 recently, because I really wanted, but the Tyrant chasing me all the time made it really difficult to me.

And really, it doesn't even take a horror game to make me nervous. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, for example, makes me terrified (but I endure it). Hell, even freaking POKÉMON can make me anxious and scared sometimes...

I can't handle horror games at all. Not even the slightest bit. Just a modestly creepy atmosphere is enough to make me freak out and close the game. Hell, I can't even handle a lot of the low visibility zones in Freelancer.

I agree with you. I am a total coward when it comes to horror games. But I cannot watch the movies either. I really wanted to watch the original Resident Evil but lost large parts of the plot when my hands were covering my eyes. I compromised. Taped it and just fast-forwarded the icky bits.
Very hard to play a horror game with my eyes shut. I can play pixelated horror games - less realistic maybe? I do have Layers of Fear in my library. Just waiting for a really bright sunny day to play it :)

Lol, not like you miss much of the plot when it is fast forwarded (really no conversation apart from agh, help, kill it).
Seriously, yes, I loved that first movie.
Had a hard drive failure at Christmas and am trying to only install a game when I have finished one. So far I have just 13 installed and am plugging away at about 4, with another two I am stuck in. I might take a while. Have heard that it is quite creepy and a very well told story. If I get to it before you do I will let you know :)

I like horror games but I hate those titles where the main scare factor is nothing more than "booo spoookeeeh stuff jumping in youuuurrr faaceee!" kind of stuff.

Im more of a fan of games like Silent Hill where the tension is constantly built up throughout the game and where sometimes the scariest part is what you cant see /the feeling of uneasiness

I love good horror, but I'm also a total snob and the vast majority of 'horror' games (and movies for that matter) just use startle-scares/screamers and gorn as a crutch. I don't even mind startles so long as they fit the theme and pacing, and aren't just artificially tacked-on with perfect intentional audio/visual engineering to maximise the effect. Which is weird because Silent Hill 2 mostly bored me, but I felt Silent Hill 3 flowed better. Hey, I'm a snob, I never claimed to make sense!

I was able to enjoy the original Five Nights At Freddies because it was self-aware and all too happy to ham it up, while bringing a new thematic spin. A cheap game called "Night Blights" had a vaguely similar thing to it, only you had to walk around the house yourself (as a child) and fend off the slowly increasing waves of gremlin-like monsters by doing stuff like feeding toys to the one under your parents bed so it doesn't eat them, or keeping the fireplace lit so they can't come down the chimney. Failing to do so either results in an instant game over as they eat a family member, or gives you a massively increased chance of game-over as nightblights zip around in the shadows trying to catch you. It's a childish design but it's also charming enough that the gurgly monster-voiced startle scare made me chuckle more than curse. Amnesia was pretty okay but lacked bite. SOMA was my jam, not for its monsters but the tension and the choices that actually made me pause and evaluate what I would do IRL instead of what 'my character' should do for in-game reasons. I loved Infernium, a little-known explorative game with only mild horror elements, but still able to scare you by catching you off-guard (except the screaming shadow things, definite screamer there).

I adored Cabin In The Woods not just for horror deconstruction, but its explicit poking fun at startles by adding a screamer at the start, but solely for the title appearing out of nowhere. Shaun of the Dead did the comedic slant perfectly, keeping the action and focusing on the characters and not overdoing it with the gorn aspect. Most recent horror I enjoyed was "Get Out", which I watched after seeing the trailer for "Us", which I sadly didn't make enough time to see.

Just started to play "Downfall" too, the remastered version of an old free game the creator of "The Cat Lady" made.
Oh god, The Cat Lady. Great game. That's horror without the startles, all about the character interaction. I loved that game, and is fairly soft too in regards to 'player torture' effects, haha. Hnnnng, hungry for 'good' horror.

To be honest, I have turned away from Horror, watched plenty of old horror flicks when I was young and thanks to both my sisters, I got the surround sound jump scare from their screams. I can almost anticipate a horror scene when its going to happen but even if you're most prepared, you can't prepare from others screams, hahaha, that applies to watching in the cinema or not alone.

On Computers, the games are mostly atmospheric as far as those I encounter its mostly to do with the music for me. Most of the games rely on Jumpscares and sudden music. I am very sensitive to noise, when I am on PC I am usually using earphones so . . . I normally tune down the volume. Knowing I will just get into unwanted jumpscares for no good reason. I've basically, avoid horror games, I do follow on some horror games that have good reviews or I've seen the gameplay/story to be good.

All in all, avoid them if you don't think they are for you. ^_^ Cheers~

Haha! I hear ya. I don't enjoy gore horror at all. It doesn't scare me, just grosses me out. I'm a bit squeamish about blood and guts. Jump scares don't bother me at all much. In fact, I sometimes enjoy a good psychological thriller or psych-horror game if it's not filled with blood spatter and decapitations.

When my back was really sore, one jump scare made me jump a little too much. I literally screamed, not from the scare, but because I hurt myself when I jumped. Hahaha! It was pretty funny. I was getting teased for that one. I banished myself from playing them until I was feeling somewhat better, just in case. lmfao. What makes it even funnier is the fact that it was one of those silly point and click games. lol.

My brother used to be a scardy pants when we were younger. He cried when I was watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was that bad. lol. Today he's a bit more badass and even likes horror films... stuff that I would never watch haha. But... playing Silent Hill... he was totally freaked out and asked me to play it with him. ROFL. Two things about Amnesia, should this be of any help:

  1. The audio track lost its effect as soon as I noticed that most of the noises are completely untied to whatever is happening (or not happening) in the game world
  2. I never finished it because I ran out of light items in a room, I don't remember what went wrong, but I think there was a considerable amount to replay because of that.

My dream is to play Alien isolation 2 is VR. Walking in corridor and seeing saliva drop from a vent ahead of me. Hiding under a table and have a Alien's tail fall infront of me with a huge 'thud'. Hiding inside a locker and have alien pass right infront of me. Crawling through a vent and hearing motion tracker beep getting fast than faster and faster. That would be ultimate gaming experience.
