Hey SG, I mentioned in a discussion yesterday that I was working on this feature, and I just wanted to write an announcement since it's complete. In short, when you win a game, the site will now check your other giveaway entries that are open, and remove those for the game you just won. It also works for giveaways ending at the same time. This helps to prevent you from accidentally winning a game more than once while you're sleeping, or away from the site.

FAQ

  1. Does this happen when I win, or when I mark a gift as received?
It happens the moment you win. When users win a game more than once, it typically occurs before they even have time to visit the site. If we waited until a gift was marked as received, it would be too late in the majority of cases.

  2. Do I get points refunded?
Yes, if any of your giveaway entries are automatically removed, we will refund the correct number of points, assuming you have less than the current maximum of 300.

  3. Does this prevent all possibilities of winning a game more than once?
No, a user could still end up the winner of a giveaway, and then a different giveaway they entered in the past could be rerolled, causing them to have two wins for the same game. Or, a user could win a giveaway, believe they are not going to receive the gift from the giveaway creator, and start entering more giveaways for the same game, only to win again. We'll look at options to reduce these possibilities, but for now, this update covers most instances of multiple wins that we are seeing. Remember, if you ever win a game more than once, you should only redeem one copy, mark additional copies as not received, and ask those giveaway creators to request a new winner.

The main benefit of this update is the time and headaches it saves for everyone on the site. Last month we had 2,012 tickets requesting new winners because the current winners already won or purchased the game. That's nearly half of our Request New Winner tickets, or 25% of our total tickets. Overall, this is going to result in less explanations from giveaway winners, less tickets required from giveaway creators, and more sleep for the support team. It's a win-win-win.

Edit

This is now setup for rerolls as well. If a giveaway is rerolled and you're selected as the new winner, the site will remove your other giveaway entries that are currently open for the same game.

The problem with this feature is that there is the potential to lose a ton of points as a result. When a popular bundle goes live and there are many instances of the same games being given away it is very easy to put points into one or more games far in excess of 300 points each (this is also ignoring currently unused/available points). When the Humble Monthly hits is just one example but it could apply to literally any bundle.

There are two ways that I can think of offhand to remedy this as best as possible:

  • When points are refunded by automatic entry removals allow it to exceed the 300pt cap to fully refund all points.
  • Make automatic entry removals an optional setting that can be disabled by the user. Traditionally speaking, I've always been in the habit of manually removing the additional entries for won games anyway, so for someone like me the feature is not particularly useful.

I suppose that someone may have already mentioned this issue but I didn't feel like scouring through almost 500 comments.

If someone hadn't won the game they would need to continue to spend points on it though. Is the win enough of a return for the potential loss in points? To me, it is.

In a word, no. It also assumes that the giveaway creator will actually deliver as well, which there is no way to know. Anyway, as far as I am concerned the two should be mutually exclusive.

I lost ton of points by constantly entering and not winning anything for almost up to 2 months ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It doesn't appear to be working for DLC? I keep winning the same DLC in a row, just several hours between each other. I thought it would automatically remove entries if I win something?

Again! I just won Wanderland: Starter Pack (DLC) and it didn't remove the entries for other ongoing giveaways I joined for this DLC.

That's nice feature, I remember winning two giveaways for the same game that were in the same time, so after that I got suspended for a week and now my account is flagged, so I can't enter some private giveaways. I guess I deserved it for not reading FAQ.

Even if it happened, you could always ask for a re-roll on the key you don't use. If you want to redeem that mark on your account, you can always provide a new key to one of the GA creators and ask them to re-roll it. It would require trust & support's assistance but it may be worth it to you if you decide to.

Yeah, I am well aware of that now, but wasn't at the time I won those giveaways. That was my first time actually winning the giveaway on Steamgifts and I didn't really know how system works. I was caught just a month ago for something that happened almost 2 years ago and received 7 day suspension, but they also marked that I didn't activate one key I received. The giveaway for the game was Baseball Mogul 2015 and I got Baseball Mogul Diamond and I was asked to activate the key. I told them that I activated everything that i received, I even mentioned that about Baseball Mogul 2015, but still moderator didn't lower the penality. I don't really know what I was supppsed to do in that situacion, but for receiving two same games I can say that I am guilty. I couldn't just ask the guy to give me the key for Baseball Mogul 2015 when I already activated the game that is in the same price range and from the same franchise, maybe the system didn't let him make the giveaway for that specific game, I don't know.

I don't really know what I was supppsed to do in that situation

in that situation you didn't receive the titled game you had won. in those cases you notify the creator that they had the wrong title in there and either a: give them permission to remove the giveaway or b: request the correct win title or c: mark the giveaway not received (if the creator doesn't want to correct it in any other way).

What if I already activated the key, should I also mark it as not received, even though I received different game?

Yes, since you didn't get what you were promised and thus supposed to get.
But first contact the giveaway creator, like d3m4n stated above
Besides, how would you know what game the key is for without activating it?

+1

it's not to be mean to the creator or anything like that. it's just against the rules for you to accept something that isn't the titled win. you could look at it like it's your compensation for winning something they gifter didn't have if you wanted. and that's why my first "a:" option was to give permission for a removal though as well, it's the friendliest/nicest of options in those circumstances to help the creator keep their account clean of "not received" marks as well.

Yes.
Asking to change the game (takes a while) or deleting the GA would be the nicer option.

But marking recieved when you did not exactly activated the game you were promised just comes around and bites you in the ass.

As others have stated, there's no way for you to know what the key is until you activate it. If it is not the promised game, that is not your fault. You can work the problem out with the giveaway creator, but until you get the game you were promised, it is "not received.." It is the creator's responsibility to deliver. Your responsibility is simply to redeem the game to your account if and when he/she delivers.

If you mark game as received, and its not in your library, you are going to get in trouble sooner or later.
