The only last gen console I had was a Wii, a gift I received from my girlfriend.
I was pretty happy with it but I'm a PC gamer. Not a fanatic but PC is where I game. But I still watch and read console game reviews.
Now that the PS4 has been released for some time, I thought I could get me a cheap PS3 with some games. I have a brand new HDTV. Now I can console.
I'm more interested in the PS3 since the Xbox 360 exclusives are not really my cup of tea (or am I wrong?).

I was just browsing on ebay looking for "playstation 3 Dark Souls Prepare to Die" and this is the combo I found :

  • PS3 40GB (the old fat model, not PS2 retrocompatible. If it dies, I'll buy me a cheap slim one).
  • Dark Souls : Prepare to die Edition
  • Demon's Souls
  • Mafia II
  • Uncharted I
  • Uncharted II
  • Uncharted III
  • The Last of Us
  • GTA IV
  • GTA V
  • Red Dead Redemption Game of the Year Edition (with the zombie thing)
  • Ico & Shadow of the Colossus HD
  • Ni No Kuni
  • Journey
  • FIFA 15
  • FIFA 16
  • The Orange Box
  • Need For Speed Shift
  • Zumba
  • De Blob 2
  • Red Alert 3
  • Sneaky Trains
  • Tom Clancy's Endwar
  • Motorstorm
  • Midnight Club Los Angeles
  • Grand Turismo 5
  • Grand Turismo 5 Prologue
  • Call of Duty Black Ops II
  • SingStar Dance

The previous owner had some good tastes. I still don't know why he sold it.

The bids started at 80€. We were 2 bidders.
I won at 122,50€

I think I will not play on my PC in the next months.

EDIT : turns out the previous owner had already installed a 750Gb HDD.

For that price, it's hard for even PC Master Race elitists to argue.

I' not that much a fan of consoles myself, but I think that was really a good deal!
Although 40 GB are a bit on the low side, you can freely change the internal Hard Drive, and connect external ones, unlike with the XBOX 360.
On the technical side, however, the XBOX 360 is slightly more powerful.
You could sell the games you aren't interested in for some quick cash (there are some pricey one in that list), and use that to upgrade your PC, or get that bigger Hard Drive.

It really is a great deal. Reminds that I should dust off mine too once, I still have 4-6 games in my backlog there (including Ni No Kuni).

Ni No Kuni looks awesome. Since my daughter and I are great fans of Miyazaki, there's a good chance it will be the only PS3 game I'll play with her (at least her watching). I will not drag her into Demon's Souls unless I want to permanently screw with her brain.
I had no idea this game existed until my eBay escapade...

It indeed does. I have the strange habit of keeping those things that promise the greatest fun, for last. Ni No Kuni certainly belongs into that category. :)
Ni No Kuni 2 is in development btw.

Also, PS3 is region-free, so you can freely buy games from Japan/USA/Euro and it should work. Sometimes it's cheaper to get a game from another region, or sometimes it is digital-only in your region but physical in another. (Note that this does not apply to DVD/Blu-ray movies, only games are region-free)

I wouldn't have paid more than $100... Is a very old system
The few really good games for the system are:
Uncharted I
Uncharted II
Uncharted III
The Last of Us
Red Dead Redemption Game of the Year Edition
Ni No Kuni
Midnight Club Los Angeles > Motorstorm
and you still miss the whole god of war saga.

Nice list. I also bought a PS3 not long ago, let me show you my list of games (most of them are exclusives, mainly the reason I bought a playstation).

Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection - first and foremost
Red Dead Redemption
Motorstorm Apocalypse
God of War Collection
Uncharted series
Last of Us
Ico & Shadow of the Colossus HD
Okami HD
Infamous series
Little Big Planet
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles
Heavy Rain (I didn't like it but if you're up to stuff like it then this + Beyond: Two Souls)
Dante's Inferno
Dark Souls also plays better on a console than pc, hence why I also bought it for PS3.

If you're done with playing your games check these out if you will.

Great list of games but sooner or later they taking down all those last gen systems off internet access though. Might of been better to buy new games from the Playstation streaming service but then again it isnt popular since you got to pay 100bucks(when it was on sale during Xmas) a year to access that streaming service and you got to buy the games still again. But man most of those games on that list were AWESOME!!!!!!!(add a few thousand more !)

Yeah, pretty good idea! PS3 has plenty of good exclusives. But you may want to make sure you have money set aside to buy a slim (not the super slim, though). And buy the one with the highest memory you can afford. Most of the time, Slim consoles are crap - but in the case of the PS3, the fat one is the one to avoid.

I bought a fat PS3 from some dude on craigslist, after a few days, it got the yellow light of death. I opened it up and replaced the GPU (took about four hours), reassembled it, and it worked for a few hours then did the yellow light again. I tried the "hair-dryer" trick, but that didn't do anything either. Both have been known to help some people, but even then, it's only temporary. And the YLOD is practically inevitable on the fat PS3's, sadly. Plus, every PS3 game has a mandatory install of roughly 8 GB (sometimes more, sometimes less).

By the way, check out the Resistance series. They're a lot of fun. Ratchet & Clank is good too, and it's the same devs as Resistance q:

That's my intention :)
But since I have two young daughters, I might try out Ni No Kuni or Journey first. While they are awake. And I'll play Demon's Souls if I have enough energy after I put them to bed.

Red Dead Redemption such amazing game, I played it on 360. Enjoy it. Undead Nightmare DLC is amazing as well (don't start playing it before completing original story, though, there's spoilers right at the start)
