Hey, I just recieved a RU Steam Gift for the game South Park™: The Stick of Truth™. Now, I can't add it to my Steam Libary because I get this message: Notice: This version of the game will only be playable in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Is there still a way to active it?

Absolutely. No money is better than a little money, right?

Stop being so entitled. Paying 60$ in Russia would be the same as Paying 180$ for a game in the USA.

There are lots of countries that are in worse condition than Russia yet they get the standard european prices.

so average US citizen gets around 300-500 USD a month?

actually since most of America is under the poverty line and most can only get a part-time job. yeah

Paying $60 in my country would be the same as paying $600 in the USA. Now compare that I dare you.

No, its region locked only for these contry and can't be played outside them.

Without compromising your account? No.

Take a vacation to one of those countries is the most legal way that won't get your account banned.

Could this actually work?
Take a trip to Russia from America, for example. Purchase while in Russia, connect to account. Come home...auto-converted to US?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It works on VPN, it will most certainly work if you actually visit the country. The only difference is that one will get you banned and the other is unfeasible with travel fees that would cost more than the actual game, making it pointless.

Permalink

Actually, both will get you banned.

Really? So I live in Russia, but then decide to move to the US. My account will be banned?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No,but you will have to send a steam support ticket so they can change your account region.

But I assumed we were talking about vacations/trip, which in that case is not allowed.

I've heard (and this is from a 2nd hand source, so not guaranteed to be at all correct), that if you show Steam Support proof you were in the country (i.e. pic of your stamped passport), even if it's just briefly, they'll let it go. Not sure it's worth it to fly to a country to save $20 on a game though.

Hmm, and if you live right next to Russian border?

I know people living right next to Czech that were doing like everyday trips for beer, so why not games.

What if you "unexpectedly" move back after only 2 weeks when you find it's impossible to get a decent borscht in Manhattan?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe if you contact support and talk to them with proof of you living in Russia and you moving to America/another country they'll over look it. No way they're going to ban your account or force you to rebuy the game if you purchased them legitimately while living in another country.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, they will. If you move from Russia to United States, for instance, and send in the support ticket, they can only remove all region-restricted games from your account (because those won't be playable in the US) to allow you to re-buy the games if you want. They won't change the region of your restricted games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. You must get a ROW copy of the game in order to activate it, or move to one of the countries listed above.

So, What's this so called VPN? Will that work?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's regional bypassing and can get your account sanctioned. Don't be stupid enough to consider it an 'option', because it's not.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure but it's not allowed.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It would work, but if you are using that, you would risk your account. If they recognize, that you are using VPN, they can ban your account forever.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It violates the Steam ToS and they could potentially disable your account if you do it. It's not worth the risk, and the user who suggested here has been suspended for doing so.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It may, but it could also result in a so-called suspension of your Steam account.

Not cool, and not worth doing.

you could only ever use it on VPN. every launch

The only thing you can do is trade it on steamtrades for keys or money. And then sell the keys on the market, get more money, and buy the game.

Try contacting steam support if they can convert it.

Permalink

Sure that will work?

How can Steam support help? They can do that for censured version of games, not for replacing a cheaper regional license with a more expensive one.

Can a friend of mine who lives in Ukraine activate it for me?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's technically the same option as a VPN.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No its not. Its the same as traveling to that country and activating it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And as long as you have the paperwork to prove you were in that country and activated it yourself, Steam might be OK with it. Which you wouldn't have if you friend does it for you. I'd not recommend having the friend activate it.

Comment has been collapsed.

If you have friends in another country you can activate it. But there might be a chance it's completely region locked so you can't play it anywhere else. And then there's VPN (which is not supported in any way). If you won the game here I suggest you to contact support and ask if you can trade it to someone for ROW version since you can't activate it and not activating gifts you won is against rules.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Steam support won't do anything. Steam isn't implementing a system to make cross region trading impossible just for fun. The only possibility is to life with this mistake and trade it for something else.
