The company was reportedly quite heavily mismanaged in general. It's also a lot bigger than I think most realize. At its peak, it had around 315 employees. The unsustainable growth, combined with the other issues really seem to have set them up for failure.

their major downfall was ambition. When they were releasing only a handful of games quite successfully, they decided to pump out more and more games. They hired significantly more people and were developing a lot more games than before, but the new games weren't completed fast enough and didn't sell as well as they had hoped.
So their costs increased significantly, but the money coming in didn't increase enough, and didn't come soon enough, for them to stay afloat

This news really bums me out, as the Telltale games have been some of my favorites in recent years. I'm especially disappointed that they aren't finishing the final Walking Dead season. I wonder what will happen to the online portion, the ability to compare your choices with your friends and the rest of the world, how long that will stay online.

So...should we buy the games before they are removed from Steam ?

I doubt they will be removed any time soon. Those games aside from the last Walking Dead are all finished and won't cause any costs by being in the steam library (aside from license renewals once the current licenses end). I also expect that someone buys the Telltale game catalogue.

hum...the games depend a lot on licences, would a bankrupt TT be able to afford them?

it's a double-edged sword - games without an established IP usually don't sell anywhere near as well.
For simplicity's sake, let's say a game retails for $20, costs $1,000,000 to develop, and publishing/distributing/etc. eats up 50% of the retail price. They need to sell 100,000 copies to break even
Now let's say licensing fees for that type of game with an established IP costs $500,000, but boosts sales 50%. They need to sell 150,000 to break even. note: licenses can be on a flat-fee basis, a percentage basis, or a combination
Thanks to the IP, you're able to sell more copies, but to cover the cost of the IP, you need to sell more to break even. On the flip side, if in the above case they sell 10% more than breakeven, they'd make $100,000 profit without the licensed IP, but they'd make $150,000 profit with the licensed IP. (on the flip side, the penalty for missing the mark is worse too).
So it's a gamble - will the license increase sales enough more than make up for the cost of obtaining the license?
Or, looked at another way, will the lack of license reduce sales below the point of viability?
It's not like TellTale didn't have a history - the founders had worked at LucasArts which often generated its own IP. TT itself had licensed well-known (aka expensive) IP as well as not-that-well-known IP (which would have been a lot cheaper), and they had developed a game based on their own IP.

i think Xbox\MS can have interest to buy theyr catalog, because if is true that xbox want to launch an extra streaming console so the telltales games is perfect for that because not need complicated gameplay (if i not remember bad theyr games is most of time just to push 1 button at right time) and adapt very well to streaming gaming.
Also about employeer maybe they get , because xbox has beautiful games about Physics\Gameplay but is lack of storytelling ,and telltales is much good on this.

I wish they come up to an agreement with humble or whoever and fire up a last big bundle before drowning like thq did. even better with DRM free content.
TWD has been one of the best gaming experiences for me :(

I'm absolutely gutted by the news. I adore both point and click adventures and Stranger Things, so I was quite excited to get the news that they were coming out with games based on the show. Hopefully somehow there will be something like it coming from someone else.

I've decided the best way to soften the blow was to create some quick cakeday giveaways of things that have been in my Humble Bundle library for ages that I either have or aren't to my personal taste, so be sure to look out for some nice games that aren't being gifted much these days for the next couple of hours.

So what do you think?! is it fake or it's for real?
Update : Sadly turned out it's REAL!
https://twitter.com/telltalegames/status/1043252010999410689
The official Telltale Games Twitter account has confirmed the studio's closure in a tweet with a statement from CEO Pete Hawley, who issued the following:
"It's been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry."
The tweet also confirms that a small group of 25 employees are staying on to fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners, and will issue comments regarding its product portfolio in the next few weeks.
