Direct from Steam, I think it was Garry's Mod back when it first went paid.

First key was my boxed copy of Half-Life 2 at launch.

Mine is L4D2 retail box. Direct, well, never.

First game I got on steam was Half-Life 2, bought the disc on release and was so sad when I noticed that it required steam.

First game I bought on steam was Condition Zero.

I think it was Flatout:UC for about 2 euros during xmas sale. It was the best spent 2 euros in my life.

I believe it was the Valve pack (orange box or whatever the bollocks the name was) back in the days. Though it could have been a gift - if so, the first purchase made by myself was Magicka, if I remember right.
Totally worth the price, especially after I found out the seemingly only reasonable way to make it work in multiplayer.

Directly on Steam? I think that was Killing Floor right when it was released.

If you count retail aswell then it was the CSS multiplayer pack. (CSS + DoD:S + HL: DM)

Half-Life 2 Gold Edition

Orange Box bought for 10 Euro in some Store and saved quite a lot of money.

I started my Steam account because of the free Portal; I then bought Dawn of War II: Gold & Portal 2 on Discs. My first Steam Store purchase was the Left 4 Dead bundle. (:

Mine was Final Fantasy XI. I had played FFXI back in 2003-2004 for a while. Enjoyed the game. Eventually bought a physical copy of the game which had a few of the expansions. Sometime after I started using Steam there was a sale going on for FFXI and it had more expansions than the ones I already had so I just went ahead and bought it. I didn't play it long though, since after returning to the game it seemed as if everyone was only in the endgame portions and the auction houses (including Jueno) were pretty much empty. Wasn't about to pay monthly fees for a game I can't really play considering you kind of need a party when restarting a character.

Left 4 Dead 2 was my second purchase. Got it from Walmart for $20 about 2 years ago. Had never played a Left 4 Dead game before and heard a lot of good things about the series. That and I'm a fan of zombies. Not -too- much of a fan of the series though.

I think it was Day of Defeat Source.

Well, I bought a retail copy of Modern Warfare 2 and made a Steam account because of that. The first game I bought on Steam was probably Left 4 Dead 2.
