New to steamfifts and already frustrated about it's community..
The big mayority of people (if not all) are just entering giveaways for any possible game they dont own yet.
Which drastically decreases the chances of people who REALLY NEED/WANT the game and/or have them in their wishlist and will actually play the game instead of letting it rot in their ever growing library of game they never ever installed or tried at least.
It's just stupid.

Had 3 giveaways and those people never even played the game when I check their profiles.
One guy even took 4 days to accept the key even though he was online here and on steam several times per day since he won it.

If I knew people were so greedy I would have given the keys to people who commented that would have really wanted to have the game instead.
Which is what I will ask for my upcoming giveaway as a restriction that only people will get the key that actually want the game and have it in their wishlist.

So I think all giveaways should be like that.

Edit:

True about people who add every game to their wishlist but those people don't really wish for something since they want everything in my eyes.
I will restrict my wish list members to 50 games on it max. I may chance this but we'll see.
I just take myself as an example where I only have game in my wishlist that I really want and its 38 till now.
People who have added my giveaway to their wishlist the the same day as my giveaway are ignored also.
My giveaways should be in their wishlist the day before or earlier than I started the giveaway.

Packs and DLC's are only given away if the owner has the base game and has played a decent amount of hours.
Since I rather give those away to people that actually still play the main game and are really excited about winning those.

My goal is to make people really happy.
Especially those who do not have the budget to pay for games and such.

I myself enter (almost) nothing that's not on my wishlist, but I see two problems with this.

  1. People who wishlist literally anything on Steam.
  2. Packs that can't be wishlisted. For example, I want to play Sam and Max: Season Two, but it counts as a pack of several episodes which can't be given away separately, and you can't wishlist the entire Season Two.

I too rarely enter games not on my wishlist. There are however, sometimes that I don't add games to WL because they are very easy to find, and I figure I'll trade for them eventually. There are also many games that I learn about on SG that I add to my wishlist after having entered a GA.

There is a simple solution to this. SG could have its own wishlist instead of using the one on Steam. And it could have a maximum capacity, say 10 or so. Now combine that with a mechanism to restrict giveaway entrants to those that have wishlisted the game prior to the creation of the giveaway, and a restriction to only be able to add games to your wishlist after a minimum of, say, 7 days have passed since the last time you added games. In the end, what you get is a system that encourages people to really think about the games they want to win, instead of entering every giveaway they see.

If you need/want the game, buy it yourself. SG is not charity organization, and you can't forbid people from joining every giveaway they can. If you want to filter entries, consider using whitelist or join some private groups that focus on that.

Also, I could add entire steam library to my wishlist, if I wanted. Most people don't use that feature, or don't keep it updated. My wishlist for instance consists of games I'd like to get, not necessary play (e.g. old games I played as a child and would love to add to steam too).

+1. I personally hate it when people describe SG as "Charity". Even if the people that tend to call it that bought games for the sole purpose of giving away, and didn't care about the CV (surprise, most don't do this and give away leftovers or obscenely cheap games), they are still giving away something that is purely a want, an amusement, esp. considering the entry requirement to joining the site. I give away for the amusement of others, sure, but to call it charity really gets on my nerves. You want to do charity, go buy some food and give it to your local food pantry, go work at a soup kitchen for a bit, or heck, even read to some sick children, because giving away games isn't it.

Sorry, I'll have to disagree (or -1, by the look of it) about this sentence. Noticed they havent played the game they won from me a single time.

Comment has been collapsed.

Still, that doesn't mean they're not going to play it at some point (even if that could be the case). And I don't think a "have the game on your wishlist" requirement would have a huge impact. Pretty much all my wins were on my wishlist, and I still haven't played most of them. It doesn't mean I have no intent to, I just don't give them priority over the games I buy myself.

Anyway, if you really want to restrict your giveaways to people that have the game wishlisted or any other sort of requirements, the only tools at your disposal are the whitelist and group giveaways.

I will not lie and say I never entered a giveaway for a game that I didn't wanted THAT much. I'm guilty of sometimes have joined giveaways of games that I simply found interesting and wanted to give it a try, but if I think about today, they would be in very low priority and I wouldn't play them anytime soon.

And I feel bad for that.

I stopped doing that tho, I'm way more selective. Each day my views of why SG exists changes a bit so I guess I'm improving.

I do agree with you on that. I don't know about the wishlist system tho.

But about not playing, damn, I have bought games MYSELF and I still didn't played. But 100% it doesn't mean I never will... I play games mostly on vacations/holidays so I can go through months without touching a game I want to play. And sometimes I'm just not in the mood for some styles of games, and this mood (or lack of) can last for months.

Portal 1 is one of the games I want to play the most as I loved Portal 2 for XBOX, I bought in the first Steam sale after I created my account, and still never played. And I 100% totally will.

Another concern would be the choice of games added to the wishlist.
I have a visual novel game called Sunrider Academy on my wishlist for instance. Total times its been given away? No more than seven times. Its still pretty new, added to steam in April, to have that as one of my wishlist options would mean I'd likely never see it, or only maybe once every three months if lucky prior to if it ever goes into a bundle or on a 75%+ sale.
Sunrider Academy - Archive

Meanwhile, there have been 158 individual giveaways (not multiples, not counting 'Season Pass') created for Fallout 4. Albeit a number of them deleted, at double the cost too compared to Sunrider, if not higher. Though this is of course much more popular, and has a larger advertisement campaign, so to speak, going for it.
Fallout 4 - Archive, page 7

Should there be an option to have an option setting for a Wishlist Only entry Giveaway? Perhaps. Depending on implementation, the site already records the games on your wishlist plus when they were added, so it could already know when a game was wishlisted, versus wishlisted purposefully to enter.

Although it could also be said they could add the game to their wishlist purposefully to enter if it didn't show up publicly, but acted the same as invite only. Though, in that notation, there is already a system in place for invite-only giveaways, just without needing that extra step for wishlist entry. Leaving only the paragraph above as a viable solution.

The other point being that any limitation on the amount of "internal" wishlisted games, used only here, unless it was an OPTIONAL feature (see paragraph two above anyway) versus the "only" option, then almost everyone would add AAA list games, just for those chances, but would have to constantly rearrange for current bundles or stuff that they'd actually like that are lesser known.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Since the addition of the "wishlist" page, I've mostly entered GAs from that list. It's an awesome feature that I'm glad was added to SG. Does that mean I don't enter other GAs too? Nah, of course not. I like to enter whatever I feel like entering. And like many have mentioned, I don't even find out about some games until I see them here on SG.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

THIS definitely, I have a ton of games on my wishlist, so that I get emailed when it goes on sale. Doesn't mean I really want the game, maybe a friend does and I want to keep an eye on the price differences. And as others have mentioned, I find most new games from SG anyway, so I won't have it on my wishlist if this is the first I've heard of it and it seems interesting...

To be honest, people who really want the game can buy it or pirate it. So it's pretty usual for the people to win the game they don't mind having in their steam library, but perfectly can live without.

Also I think it's perfectly fine if they are just waiting for the right mood, or for the right hardware (some games require hi-end pc, while those with low sysRq you keep to play on a laptop when travelling), or for their friends to get a copy to play in coop, etc..

Ofcourse they can buy it but read my comment.
Not everyone has a budget to buy games a lot.

Why would I wishlist a game that my PC can't even handle.

But thats just personal opinions

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you want to PLAY the game, you can pirate it. If you want +1 in your steam library, achievements, boast to your friends, feel that you OWN it - that's a whole another story.

Maybe they expect an upgrade soon. Or sometime in the future. Or maybe they just didn't check the requirements. But waiting for the right hardware is just one of the hundreds of possible valid and sensible (for me) reasons not to play it. Or just not to play it right now.

I simply don't pirate since I cannot support something that will take away my own income.
But you do whatever you like, pirate games or not.
Each their decisions.

Expect an upgrade?
I either know or don't know if I can or will upgrade or not.
So that doesn't make sense to me.
Unless you have no money and/or expect parents or miracles to give you money for upgrades.

Well tough luck if the person didnt check the requirements.
Personally I don't think you need to check requirements if you know your hardware.
You can basically tell my gameplay pictures/videos if your PC can handle it.

Why would I wishlist a game that my PC can't even handle.

In anticipation of getting a new one? I have lots of games on my wishlist that my computer can't run, but that I still wanted to keep track of. And now that I have a new gaming laptop arriving in a couple days, I'm glad I kept that list.

If you want to restrict your giveaways to wishlisters, it's great that SG allows you to do that via whitelist. But you need to keep in mind that people use wishlists in all kinds of different ways and that's not something you can control.

Permalink

i expect it's a lot of work, but Akash made whitelist giveaways for games from the november humble monthly bundle and added people to the whitelist each day who had the game on their wishlist since before the bundle games were revealed.

i find there are so many games i don't want to enter for but also don't want to set to hidden that it's easier to only look at giveaways that are on my wishlist. of course then i miss packs i want because steam still doesn't support putting packs on wishlists, and if i put one game from a pack on my wishlist steamgifts only shows me giveaways for that game alone.

That would be really hard to tell who wants the game.

If people are on steam playing games off and on several times a day but unable to activate a key?
As I stated before I checked before I complained.
Hence why I have come up with this.

If I (finally) win a game I would be super excited and instantly activate it and play it.
Since the games that I enter personally are games I really really want.
Even found games here that I really want that I had no knowledge of that they even were on steam.
Since they were not in my wishlist I take the time to comment this in the particular giveaway.

There are tons of reasons that can occur- from having their internet quirk out while leaving a game up, to using Idlemaster type programs, etc.

Assumptions are typically hard to validate, for SG users.

If I (finally) win a game I would be super excited and instantly activate it and play it.
I wouldn't :P
For me, that'd be a waste of a game. Instead of taking the time to play it when I'd enjoy it most, I'm forcing myself to play it right then?
It sounds to me that games are pretty interchangable for you, for me, not so much.

Sweetie, I'm in the middle of a move and can't afford to pay for it right now. Also, I'm a gamer too but I'm primarily a woman that needs to eat and feed my dog. Those are my priorities. I'm unemployed and, seeing as I'm an adult and don't have parents to support me, I can promise you that gaming is not among my top priorities right now ;)

I promise you, if you weren't so upset over this whole thing right now and, quite likely, so young or have ever been in a situation where you are litteraly hungry, you'd understand that gaming is never really a priority in life.

Also, things change. I'm planning on playing each and every game I own when I get the time for it...
After I make sure there's food on the table (both bought and prepared), clothes are in the closet (both bought and cleaned), the apartment is clean, the utilities are payed for and my dog's been taken out for a walk and fed.
Trust me, I'd love to be able to make gaming my "priority" ;)

that needs to eat and feed my dog
You may want to add a , after the eat. My first read of that was a bit horrifying :X

And yeah, I think that's a key part of becoming an adult (regardless of your actual age)- learning what does and doesn't matter, and learning to bend with things and get what positivity you can out of life.

In my case, my main reason for not playing games is because my health ends up being too poor to do so.
Do I want to play the games? Yes. I also want to run, and skip, and play.
Do I try to play the games? Yes, regularly.
Am I concerned with the number I haven't been able to get to? A bit, but mostly, they're compelling reasons* to keep pushing myself, even if it's toward inconsequential things like gaming.
I don't regret anything that has a positive impact on my circumstances, no matter how minor that impact may be.
*(Which is why I don't do 'junk' games ;P)

Though I'm right with you on the rest- I don't have the funds to upgrade my computer or internet hardware at the moment, both things I'd need to do to play any of my more demanding games. I'm saving and scrounging and doing my best each month, aiming toward that.
I'm also aiming toward new patio blinds, a washer and dryer, a desk, a new bed, actual shelves/dressers, etc.
All while trying to limit my food budget as much as possible, to do so.

So yeah, I get it :/

If your that frustrated with the "collectors", then you may set ground rules on your giveaway. Steamgift mods are rather compliment with set rules on your giveaway.

Just have something that says something like "Only people who have (set number of games) may enter" or something. If a person enters who has a TON of games and you think for a fact that they'll never play it, just request a reroll and calmly explain your reasoning to the Steamgift mods. They're rather nice in these aspects.

Also, giveaways made public allow people to expand their game horizons and potentially experience new games that interest them. Not just games they want (like if they prefer only 1 genre of game)

Just worth noting, you can only ask for a reroll on packaged games- steam entries with multiple game entries, and then only if someone owns at least one game from the package.

For any other reason, you can't usually ask for a reroll, so it's much better to use a steam group, inviting people you've already vetted to it.

That's not correct. Amount of games, won/sent ratio or anything like that cannot be ground for a reroll.

Rules were previously allowed on private/group giveaways, but only with prior approval. They are now not allowed at all. The only option is invite only giveaways where you hand pick the entrants.

If you're gonna give rules advice, make sure its right first.. Regardless of what you state on the giveaway you won't get a reroll.

Thing is I've had it done once or twice in the past so since it worked back then though it'd still apply to today.

It worked on certain giveaways with pre-approved rules. After the site redesign though it was scrapped entirely.

Hm, must've been before the redesign perhaps. I just know that I've had issues with people collecting games only for collecting, and have requested rerolls after giving my reasons. They were all approved by the mods.

Do you know why it was scrapped?

For the most part, too much work. Did those giveaways have rules about collectors entered approved by support before the giveaway was put up. If not those rerolls should never have been approved and i'm calling bullshit.

I've looked at your tickets and no special rules were involved. What you requested is actually covered by the rules :

What are the rules for entering to win Steam packs if I currently own a number of the games contained within?

  • We ask users not to enter giveaways for packages if they already own the majority of the games. This allows for winners that will receive the most value out of their gift. In the end, the giveaway creator has the final say, and if they believe the winner owns too many of the packaged games, we'll allow them to request a new winner.

lets make 300p not per day, let 300 per month and people think twice before enter GW
i think its easyest solution

GOOD POINT!
That would also be a very good solution.
I also noticed that I rarely spend all these points.
Since I only enter stuff I really want.

Right!
And we need communism too! =d
But not 300 points, because it's not enough for me even for a week xD
I have to say that most of the games I really really want aren't being given away, or they have so much entries that winning is nearly impossible, like 5k entries on Witcher III :Wild Hunt, or 3k on the old Two Worlds II,that nobody needs but they just participate to waste points.

Or just increase the amount of points needs to enter to like four or ten times as many. It won't increase the odds, but it would certainly be an incentive for people to pick only those giveaways they're really interested in.

You don't get 300 per day, 300 is the max you can hold. You can go through much more than 300 in aday.

Is it wrong to have an opinion?
Is it wrong to make people sincerly happy with giveaways they won?
Ofcourse I am happy with this site since its a core of how it can become.

How would you react if you enter a lottery with better winning chances than other lotteries and you really need that money but someone won it who has a few million Euro's on his bankaccount already?
Would you still be sincerly glad about how the lottery works?

My two cents for the purpose of discussion - please don't take any of this personally:

As others have said, if you really need something, entering a lottery is never a good idea. To be upset about not winning such a thing is just naive. If you need something and can't get it for yourself, then there are proper charities in the world to help you, and they can and do prioritize people based on their level of need.

To make SG such a serious thing is, in my opinion, a bit silly - after all, it's about games, which are purely for entertainment. As an extension, I see SG as pure fun, both in terms of giving and winning. Yes, I get some extra enjoyment out of it when a winner is particularly grateful, but I'm not here to judge what makes them happy. I've given and won a good bit on SG, and I'm excited every single time I win, no matter if it's a game I've been waiting to buy for years, or some small bundle game that I might only get an hour's enjoyment out of.

Also, as many others have said, people have many different ways of using wishlists, many different ways they like to play games, many complications in life that may reduce or delay the time they can spend gaming, etc. I have very little time to play games right now, but know that that will change over the winter. If a game that I'm really interested in playing comes up on a huge sale tomorrow, should I not buy it if I know I'm not going to be able to play it for a few months? It's really no different on SG - I attempt to win games well in advance of having any time to play them, knowing that my chances of winning are small, and it may take months to win if I ever win at all, and the value and appreciation I get out of the win are no less just because I don't play it for a while.

Finally, though your intentions seem good - wanting to give games to other to spread happiness, with a desire to maximize that happiness - I think you really need to take a look at how judgmental and presumptuous you are being in the process. True giving is done without judgement or expectation, and I think that is a sentiment that the world could use a little more of. This may not be the case, or it may be without you realizing it, but reading all of this it really seems like your true goal is to maximize the amount of gratitude you receive.

No,
i have 800+ games, that i really want. you should see my not want list. it's over 1500 i think

so, don't like the idea. besides. this is half of the games i know are from this site. either from GA or from the forum.
i haven't gone over the 4k+ games on steam yet. sorry about that

That is what I mean with that I would only accept realistic people only personally.
I mean how can you REALLY WANT 800+ games...
Then you are either very spoiled or super unrealistic.

Ofcourse this is my personal opinion since to me it looks like a disorder if someone would really be like "OMG I NEED THIS!!!" to every single game in their 500+ size wishlist.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can easily see someone wanting a lot of different games. If you have a wide taste in games, and you're not super picky about exactly which game you play, but are fine with playing what you think seems like a good game and don't worry about the rest, then 800 or even 1000+ games is not unrealistic.

Well, I've read 500 books throughout the past few years, and those were the books I really wanted to read. I also have around 400 books on my wishlist, too, and I'd like to read them.
I have 300 items on my steam wishlist, and those are the things that have sparked my interest in one way or another.
You can't tell if someone REALLY WANTS or just simply wants those 500+ items on their wishlist. I doesn't necessarily mean that they would GET all those 500+ games. But you can't judge if they want or not want them.

to 50 games on it max.
You may want to check the dates of when games are added to wishlists. Most people that ACTUALLY use wishlists for any purpose- note that a lot of people don't just use them for games they want have FAR more inclusions on their wishlist than 50 I personally have nearly 900 (including DLCs, Early Access games, multiple versions, etc)- but my 'blacklisted' games are over 4000, as well, and a number that small is actually- in my experience- more often (but of course, not always) leechers attempting to enter wishlisted giveaways, or track AAA games on SG, than a legitimate wishlist.

Which isn't to say it isn't a valid approach, just that it's still quite flawed.

Just do what many people do, and make puzzles related to the games, and post them on the discussion forums. The people that care enough about the game will know the answers, or be willing to search thm out.

Likewise, setting a higher level requirement for entry filters out most -though unfortunately not all- the leechers, bullies, etc.

Packs and DLC's are only given away if the owner has the base game and has played a decent amount of hours.
Can you check achievements earned on someone else's account? Else all you'll be checking is their card-farming time spent.
In my case, I mostly play non-online-multiplayer games in offline mode, so.. :P

There are no easy answers- though ceasing low-level public giveaways is definitely a necessary step if you want to avoid most frustrations.
Take a breath, and give it some more thought, and figure out what approach works best for you:
They're your games, after all, make sure you feel more often satisfied than not, at giving them away :)

The puzzles are nice I will check it out.

I don't understand why people play in offline mode :S
What are the benefits?
Since I personally use steam to talk to friends next to play games with them.

Just hoping to create a better world.
Have to start somewhere as a gamer :D

What are the benefits?
Steam in online mode uses memory resources (and seems to have continuous cloud data updating, which also can slow things), I get better gameplay with it off.
It's a lot better now than it used to be, but it can still be noticeable in some games.
Also? I really don't like people poking around what games I'm playing. It's my private relaxation time- and as you noted yourself, there are some people that like poking around in that. It's a bit.. uncomfortable.

Well, we're talking single player games. No helping multiplayer ones. Sometimes there's a positive to people seeing you play those, as well.

In my opinion that sounds very unsocial and paranoid to be honest :D

You're behaving quite rudely, you know.
There's nothing 'paranoid' about not wanting to be messaged while playing a story-driven game.
In fact, there's no correlation between that word and that event, at all.

As far as being unsocial goes, pretty sure you wasting your time stalking people goes far beyond my wanting to read a [visual] novel in peace.

The benefits of playing in offline mode:
You don't have 100+ hours of playtime shown on your profile page, when you're supposed to do something important instead.

silly as it is, I prefer not seeing that, it makes me feel guilty and even less productive

It was not hunting.
I always give away stuff to people that really need it.
Games or materialistic things.
Yes I am new hence why I did some research after my giveaways to see if they really liked it.
I do the same with people I give stuff to that I can spare.
Since it makes me happy to make people happy.
It makes me sad to see people gaining something they don't really need while I see other that would really wanted to have it to actually use it.
Hence why I came up with this topic.

If I win a game that is on my wishlist I would be sincerely happen and play it asap.
I will personally target the same like minded people.

If you're not a wishlist user then you can always comment on the particular giveaway that you really like the game but do not have it on your wishlist.
I would personally evaluate the persons profile and judge from there if he should be eligible for that.

If its a public giveaway then you can't restrict it, if it's private they can't view it to comment on it. How do you expect this to work.

No you can't if you make it a public one, you have chosen to make the GA available to everyone.
Sounds like you'd be better off with making high level or whitelist GAs.
Make a thread with the game name and ask for people who really want to play it and whitelist them based on if they have it on their wishlist/ if they can convince you and then make the GA for them.
Many users including me have done so, you can see mine here.

You can't do that on a regular giveaway, you may create a topic in the forums (like this one) and maybe ask people who want the game (and meet certain characteristics) to comment and give the key (without getting CV) to whoever you think deserves it the most.
