Just created 10 GAs this past weekend. I ended up opening them up to the general public. No restrictions so there is really no excuse. Out of the 10 only 4 have not yet been received. That means at least six people out there are simply too busy winning games to take a few moments to thank the creator for winning the game. I understand, you folks just need a little help. You are winning too much and just don't have time to say thank you after winning. To ease the burden a bit, I'll be blacklisting everyone who won my GAs but is too busy to say thank you. See, now you'll have less GAs to enter so you might have more time to show gratitude after winning a free game.

I really don't care if someone says thank you when entering the GA. There are hundreds of GAs so thank you starts to sound real hollow when entering but when you win you should take the time to thank the GA creator for giving you the game you just won. I've been discouraged from making GAs which are open to all. This is one of the reasons why. It's too bad lower level members of this website are getting such a bad rap but it is what it is. This will likely be one of the last open GAs I make, unless I do by mistake. Anyways, don't feel bad, I'm not mad. I don't get mad.

I get even. :) <----- This is said tongue firmly in cheek, in case of any confusion. I also wish to add that I don't really believe that you have to ask yourself if you need to be grateful if you are Pikachu. Pikachu don't care!

Do you expect to be thanked by the winner of your GA?

View Results
Oh hell YES.
No, I just crush my disappointment into a tiny little ball and push it deep into the dark recesses of my soul.
My answer is much too complex for a poll you pleb! I will elaborate below!
Never really thought of it but now that you mention it you have AWAKENED THE GIANT!
My leeching is as thankless as it is mindless.
Do I have to be grateful when I am the MuthaFuckinPikachu?!

I prefer to get thanked by the winner, but it doesn't really upset me if they don't :)

No expectation = no disappointment.
As long as my winners follow the rules and are not total leeches I'm fine, but getting thanked makes me feel like my gifts were appreciated,
instead of being a mere "bundle trash for CV points" investment.

i try to thank every single win with 2x exceptions....

if its a 1000+ copy (i feel they get enuf spam and dont need me adding too it)

-or-

winning ~3-5games all at one time from the same person (in which case i type up one larger even more sincere thank you for all of them at once, rather then spamming them with "ty1" "ty2" etc.)

Imho "gifting" a charitable act, you don't do charity expecting to be "thanked", you do it because it makes you feel like a better person.
The whole point of this site is to gift things to one another, I don't feel like anyone is obligated to thank me for anything I give away here. Especially since I joined knowing that is exactly what every single person will be doing here. Gifting and receiving. ^^

I won't deny it is quite heartwarming when someone does thank you, especially on those giveaways that you did actually put some money into in order to make someone's day. But, for me, that's it. It's nice to have. I refuse to judge people on it, mainly because often I, myself, am browsing on my phone while at work (or at least when I HAD one >-< ) or busy doing other things around the house, and I often forget (I am an extremely forgetful person in general). Heck, when I first joined I was even too shy to say thank you because I felt "guilty" for winning things...
People are complicated and people have bad days, you never know. Shrugs

Now the ones that actually break the rules, don't mark their wins, re-gift and win multiple copies are the ones I mainly save for my BL.

You make good points but I respectfully disagree. Charity is giving to those in need and video games aren't needed by anyone. You do not need the game I am gifting you and I certainly don't need the games I've won. I genuinely appreciate them (especially since it gives me the opportunity to play games I wouldn't normally be inclined to play) so I always say thank you and I expect to be thanked.

Permalink

That's a fair point.
I guess it truly comes down to how one thinks of it.
I tend to think of it more of like a charitable gesture on the giver's behalf regardless of the need behind it. Mainly because I like to believe that the reason behind charity is not just to provide to people just because they "need" it, but because one can feel better by sharing something with another human being just for the sheer joy of it (Idealistic, I know...).
But yes, most people will generally think of it as a mutual interaction that falls under the general guidelines of common courtesy. I can perfectly understand that. ^^

I used not to care about it... Then I started to get pissed and reduced the number of my giveaways because of the leechers...

Always paid attention to my ratio, I try to keep it higher than 2:1. People started to blacklist me without reason (I always comment after I win, never before unless people ask for it. I pay attention to the text people post on giveaways and love to act as people ask for)

Now I started to do some giveaways again, and now I blacklist without pity the leechers I find on my giveaways. We have a nice community here and we don't need this kind of behaviour. :) (YEAH, PIKACHU!)

Blacklist for no reason? I haven't checked yet, gonna give it a few days but this thread is gonna increase my name being added to blacklists. The thing is it doesn't matter. There are simply too many people creating too many GAs for it to matter. I agree that blacklisting rules violators is the way to go but they usually end up getting banner eventually anyways. I tend to think blacklisting is there because we have whitelists. If we didn't have a way to blacklist we'd demand it but I don't think blacklisting in its current form has any teeth. Perhaps that's the way it needs to be so it will not be abused.

Yeah. People, these days want a reason to do this kind of thing.

As I said, only did one thing in the past that COULD make me blacklisted, and I am currently on this person whitelist because how I handled the misunderstanding.

All my current blacklist doesn't have anything related to giveaways, but with past comments in discussions. Worse than that, I'm not aggressive at all, but I don't agree with things that are wrong to me. So it is enough. :)

i liked as it was before sgv2. you sent an email to the winner and it was a hint to some form of contact. i always answered those emails and sometime a thread opened. another thing is the notifications. now people is less prone to writing in a giveaway page, myself included. nevertheless i think what not thanking a gift is rude.

I know I am guilty of not commenting or reading or following description instructions of the GA creator. That's on me and I know it's hurt some folks feelings but there are only so many hours in the day and I spend a large portion of it trying to adult. I just don't have time to participate in scavenger hunts or gif contest or any of the other requests GA creators make. There is no rule that dictates I must do what the GA creator asks prior to entering a GA just as there isn't one that stated the GA creator must be thanked by the winner. These are simply our preferences.

Perhaps I have not been as even-handed in my thinking as I could be. After all if I don't want to leave a comment when entering a GA why should anyone else feel feel any gratitude for winning my GAs? Is this a false equivalency or can they be judged evenly?

there is no rule about thanking when you receive a gift or a favour, it is a convention among educated people and it is what i teach to my children. of course there may be reasons for somebody not to do it. there is people that does not salute back when I do. it's not a rule, it's a convention and not do it can be interpreted as rude. as you may notice I'm not speaking sg wise but rl wise.

Don't really care one way or another, all I want the winner to do is activate and mark received as fast as possible so I can watch my CV go up cent by cent, that's all the thanks I need. But because others might expect it, I always thank when I win.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I always say thanks when I win a giveaway, that is because I'm only entering giveaways for games I really want to play so I might even be too enthusiastic with my reaction.

There are also times I update the host with my progress (generally a link to my achievement progress), say some words about my thoughts regarding the game and thank for the 2nd time after I complete the games. Personally I want to let the winner know that their money was not wasted (excluding the CV they get) and the gift they provided was seriously appreciated.

I don't expect the same treatment back; however, I'd always appreciate a comment from the winner, generic or not :)

you'll blacklist anyone who won't say "thank you" under your GA after winning? Well, it seems to be a fad around SG recently...
not that I'm calling myself a super-mega-pro-best-experienced-forever SG user, but I've been around here for a while and I've seen my share.

Throughout the years we've been through:

  • people getting mad for no comments
  • people getting bots to spam comments
  • people getting mad for spam comments
  • people stopping to comment/turning comments bot off 'cause 90% GAs are "no comments or BL"
And apparently now we're having no comments rage again...

TBH I don't care. This little comment means nothing. Even more, it's spam. It highlights my notification as if something important happened and it's just one dishonest "thank you" comment. 8 letters that mean literally nothing whatsoever sinc the person who won the game won't even launch it once or just farm the cards if there are any. And again, TBH I don't care. Do whatever you please. It's yours now. But why spam if you don't mean it? Just mark as recieved and be gone. Want to really show your gratitude? Elaborate. Maybe say something more then copy-pasted spam. Why don't you share some screenshots how you enjoy your gift? Or best of all -give something away for the community yourself!

tl;dr
noone benefits from 8 letters of spam. better do something good for everyone and make a GA yourself!

"dishonest", "8 letters of spam" - pretty strong words. I don't expect to see "thank you" messages, but I want the winner to leave some message. If he can't spend at least 10 seconds to write/paste something in return, he didn't deserve to win. I treat such gifts as wasted - I could just throw the game away and it would be pretty much the same feeling.

"noone benefits" - as you can see that's not true.

You share what you are willing to share and it's ok. But don't play "I'm poor, I give what I can" card when majority of yours 600+ library was enjoyed solely by the idlemaster.
It isn't easy, but stand in front of the mirror and face the truth. Deluding yourself is comfy but it only reduces your chances to improve your material situation

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well, actually despite how it looks I've actually played MOST of those games. I won't deny some were purely idlemastered, but most of them even if they were treated by IM they were either earlier or later on played by me. 30 or 15 minutes only in some cases, before getting discarded for variuos reasons. Yet, it's impossible to spend over 100 hours in EVERY game. Then I would REALLY have NO LIFE.
Regardeless I don't see your point. What's the correlation between idlemaster and me having no money?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You could have given away half of the library and wouldn't even notice. This takes away any right to use "I do all I can" - nothing more, nothing less. No second bottom to look for.
As for no money. Amassing 600 games means you have money. Possibly little compared to others, but it still are money you spent on luxuries you don't even want to "use". In other words, you are nowhere near poor, just not as well off as some others.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

oh, you're talking about THIS!
OK, first of all If I could have given away half of my library, I'd have to do outside sg or bypass sg's system blocking GAs for free games.
For the games I actually paid for, I play those. looking at steamdb I have nearly $6k worth of games, but look at total cost with sales and it's only $1312. The matter of fact is that I don't know how this calculates games given away for free in ridiculous ammounts via gleam.io (like dead bits which I've seen givean away like that easily a hundred times or so, a few thousand keys each time. nonetheless that's the way I've acquired it) but either way I've never bought a game at full price. Including all the bundles (I doubt it would count "the lowest known price" for a game at less than $1 just because it was with 5 other games on tier 1 of some HIB) All the games I won here on SG or was given by friends and I can easily estimate that I've spent no more than $200-$250. For 5 years of using steam and over 600 titles not that huge ammount, won't you say?
But of course someone could come and say that'a a BS and for "as much as I can" I should redeem no bundle keys from bundles I bough for myself and just give them all away! I can always stick to F2Ps. Heck! maybe I should sell my house 'cause it can get me money to buy more games to GA and since I still haven't done that it's still not "all I can"!

So what is it about?
You didn't convince me that 8 copy-pasted letters change anything. I tried to convince you that in fact, they don't. Especially now, that it got fairly common for gifters to require a "thank you" from winners. I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of bots/scripts repurposed from spamming "thanks" under any GA (as people turned from requireing those to blacklisting for them) to autospam only under won GAs

Eh, you are really entitled to a thank you. Of course it's always nice, but if someone doesn't it's fine, we all have reasons and steamgifts is hardly the most important thing in life. In my opinion people on this website who blacklist people that don't thank them need to chill. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own blacklist.

I don't agree. I don't believe you are entitled to a thank you. That's not how I feel about it. I'd like to get one from the winner of my GAs and if they don't I wave the blacklist club around but it's not all that serious. Blacklisting is the sort of "non-threat" that gets tossed around SG as a virtual punishment. The majority of members don't care or simply aware of how meaningless getting blacklisted is. Of course if the entire website blacklisted ya then that's a problem but a minority of SG members even use the forum. Take this entire topic with a grain of salt. Is not as serious as all that.
