Why would anyone not take advantage of the technology and opportunities of the 21st century? I mean, an android phone goes as low as 20 to 30 bucks, it's not like an extremely expensive product unaffordable for everyone.

You can use a smartphone without a SIM card, sticking to apps and Wi-Fi. Sure, it's not much of a phone anymore, but... are they, really?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure. I have an iPod Touch I think I could use but I'm holding off until I hear the authentication app is reliable (I hear people getting locked out when it wants an authentication code to sign into the authenticator...). Unless you'd use the other features of an inactivated smartphone, it's silly to get one just for authentication purposes.

That would be silly, sure. But if you sum up the potential benefits (offline maps, Whatsapp or similar when under Wi-Fi, games) then it might make sense.

Unless I am misunderstanding the update, you no longer need to receive an SMS to activate the authenticator. You can now use the email you have on file. I'll test this tonight. It will still be a royal pain in the behind, but it might work still.
That Blue option at the bottom didn't appear when I last attempted to use it, but maybe it will tonight!

It's their platform. It's up to them to do things. If they think it makes things more secure, then why not?

If you don't have either, then there's escrow. It's not like your items gone to abyss.

Just had my first trade go on hold. No big deal at my end, someone sent me a 1:1 card offer and I don't mind waiting it out. Guess they don't have the authenticator as I do.

This fucking sucks. The confirmations settings in 'privacy settings' already say that you won't get your items back if you disable it... so why this? I'm willing to take that risk.

I just traded with a card exchange bot. The first trade went thru, the second and third went on hold, so I cancelled all trades on hold. now if I wanna trade it says "You cannot trade with 7 because you recently had all your trade offers canceled."

I cannot trade with anyone anymore - all other people are now called "7", at least i get the very same error message, no matter with who i try to trade with. does it mean I have to wait 7 days before I can trade again? I'm using the steam mobile auth - volvo, why are you punishing me because I cancelled trades on hold? I dont want any trades on hold, I'M USING THE STEAM MOBILE AUTHENTICATOR! WTF?

Hmmm, not entirely true. I traded some cards earlier and it said one day, even gave the time. I'm guessing it depends on what items are traded. I'm curious now what items merit what kind of escrow period.

EDIT: I'm not using the mobile app, either. Was kind of surprised at one day.

Very odd. I traded some cards from my wife's account to mine today at 12:45PM and the message in the yellow bar at the top said that if the other party accepts the trade the items will be released from escrow on Dec 10, at 1245PM (tomorrow).

Once Steam is back up from maintenance, I'll trade some cards again and see what happens.

The article here explains it all. if you and your trade partner have been friends for more then 1 year then the items will be held for 1 day, otherwise it's 3

Did you trade through the chat window, the Steam client or web browser? I don't have a smart phone, so I'm using Steam Desktop Authenticator, and I just got my first escrow hold trade.

I did a bunch of trades through SteamTrade Matcher and I did not see a notice that the trade would go in escrow. I thought this was a good thing because I was worried that if you could tell that a trade would go to escrow that it wouldn't split traders into those who can trade instant and those who can't. If you can see whether a trade will be put in escrow this can potentially cause people to not want to trade with people that can't.

I was using the Steam client and trading cards between my wife's account and mine. Obviously we've been friends for over a year, so as someone pointed out that's why the shorter escrow period.

I'm not using the Steam mobile app/authenticator (no smart phone and I'll be damned if I bug my wife every time I want to use hers to trade).

I don't know anything about that Desktop Authenticator, but I'd definitely be very careful using something like that ... I know I don't plan on using it, but the most I trade for is cards anyway, and always with people on my friends list.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mostly trade using my browser using trade bots and services like SteamTrade Matcher. I've done some more trades and I did get the notice once, but it doesn't show up all the time because three more trades are in escrow and I only got the one notice.

The desktop authenticator is safe to use if you enable the encryption, but you can also just use an Android emulator and run the official app on your desktop. Even with the mobile authenticator, this is making trading a pain in the ass (which I believe is Valve's motive). When trades get put in escrow, they're removed from your inventory, so using something like SteamTrade Matcher to find people to swap duplicates now produces a lot of false positives because it doesn't know about items being held in escrow. I've already accidentally traded for a card I already have for because I forgot I had a trade for it sitting in escrow.

(which I believe is Valve's motive)

You're not the first person to say that. It occurred to me a few days ago that this new trade system benefits Valve in a lot more ways than just cutting down on support for scams/thefts.

  • It's going to drive more people to the market to buy things like trading cards, rather than wait out the escrow for a 5-10 cent card. Valve gets a cut of every card sold.

  • It's also going to drive people to do less trading for games and thus cause them (though indirectly) to buy more games from Steam directly, out of impatience with the trading system, and also not knowing if the person you're trading with is using the authenticator.

  • Fewer support contacts (the obvious one). Cuts labor costs.

  • Cuts down on a lot of automated bots, again forcing more users to the community market for purchases.

Comment has been collapsed.

Further evidence is that a few days after announcing this escrow business, they also implemented a way for you to instantly and permanently remove games from your account if you no longer want them. If Valve is trying to protect users, why is it harder to trade a virtual trading card worth a few cents than to delete games from your account? So they're protecting users from losing inventory items if their account gets compromised, but then make it easy for someone to delete your entire game library. We have Valve Time, now we have Valve Logic.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out the benefit of deleting games over just hiding them in your library. So far I can't think of a single one.

It seems a completely unnecessary addition to their "features" and one that hackers/account thieves are certainly going to enjoy.

I just read Valve's response/explanation. Wouldn't an alternative to the 3 day escrow be a 3 day lock on newly traded items? It would give the hacked account and Valve just as much time to realize the hack and act upon it. And if the 3-day escrow is to be a deterrent to hackers, so should a 3 day item lock. Either way, for 3 days the items can't be moved and after 3 days the hacker gets the items. The benefit to the 3 day lock would be immediate badge crafting, which a profit seeking hacker would not have interest in. Am I missing any holes in this proposal?

Now if only they'd add a toggle that we could enable to show a "This user has disabled trading on their account" on our profiles so we could quit getting friend invites from beggars and the bots Valve still won't deal with, this might all make a tiny bit of sense.

Something Valve apparently overlooked, partial chat copied off one of the massive Escrow topics:

"Also now your stupid community badge on the profile page shows all hackers if you [the user] do or do not have this little additional security tool available. So potentially you've just become a more interesting target to them. Nicely advertised by Valve themselves through their needy badge.

(so much for protecting your community - how confused can you get)"

Can someone clarify how someone is supposed to log in if their phone gets splashed or something?

I mean, my email server could theoretically go down, if my primary, redundant, and backup drives all die at once. But it's still on a registered domain. A simple matter of rebuilding the exchange and I'm back in business. If my phone gets damaged I'd be basically fucked wouldn't I?

they provide you with a code you can use to turn off the mobile guard apparently. You get it the moment you sign up and IIRC you can use that code in place of your mobile code to get into your account and or shut off the mobile authentication so you can access your account.

I haven't had to use my code yet because I normally have my phone handy on me, but a few times I've needed a code without my phone handy and was locked out of my account for a few hours.. sucked..

It still seems like an extra hassle that I for one don't need to bother with yet. Especially since I'm still using a 4S and am planning to upgrade in the near future to something that won't be crippled by future OS updates.

Fairly sure all phones are eventually, essentially crippled by falling behind advancements in OS and software development.

I'm still using a S4 Active that I kept from updating to Lollipop(don't like a single thing about what it changed) and it still seems to do everything I want just fine. Well, besides having shit battery life.
