Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn, was wonderful, sandbag missions to seal enemy bases for winning xD
Red Alert II, still play it. Haven't liked any other CnC game since.
Dune 2, another classic.
Warcraft 2, miss this game. Haven't played it in years though.
Age of Empires II AoK, another oldie I still play.
Starcraft Broodwar, well all the great old classics I guess ^^
Anything newer though... I really want to like Company of Heroes, but all the games end up the same. Just masses of strongest unit in game. If only there was a ww2 game that focuses on infantry and only allows 1 or 2 heavy tanks that you have to keep functional.

Would love to see some of the old classics on steam with an actually working, easy to manage, multiplayer model. Love games like Aoe II, Stronghold or AoM, but there is almost no way to play against living players without setting up a LAN party.

Word! Even (or because?) it was no real CnC it was -especially with Zero Hour- so diverse that it kept me playing for hours...and I loved the politically incorrect campaign of this game :D

Already havin SupCom (actually SupCom2). And Planatary Annihilation is basicly the same as Total Annihilation (the prequel of Planatary), but in a larger scale and with planets, astroids erc. With that in mind, you don,t need to play it to know that it will be your favorite.

Don't get me wrong, Planetary Annihilation looks epically awesome, but saying it's your favorite strategy game before it's even out? That's just silly.
I got Supreme Commander 2 as well, and it seems pretty good, but I hear 1 is better. Anyone confirm/deny?

I still can't figure out why the hell they did that crappy second part....

Any idea how you can easily get it to run in Win7? I picked it up in a charity store not too long ago, after having heard a lot of good things about it (well, a lot might be a an exaggeration, but everything I've heard about it had been good), but it just crashes to desktop when I try to run it, and Win 9X compatibility mode or running it through a virtual machine does not seem to help.

Sorry can't give you any specific answer. I am pretty sure that I was able to run the game without much issues. It been quite some time so don't remember all details but AFAIR I could launch the game without setting compatibility but I had graphic problems on another hand. Colours were getting messed up or something like that from time to time. According to my memo, running game with NT 4.0 in 256 colours 640x480 with everything disabled + as admin lowered the frequency of colours getting messed up, but not completely, had to reset game now and then.
But if you say it doesn't work even via virtual machine, that's worrisome. Do other games work on that v.machine? If yes then maybe you got the installer corrupted.

Yea, most games that I've tried have worked just fine under a Win9X virtual machine (sadly not including Shadow of the Horned Rat or The Tone Rebellion). Might be a general compatibility issue with my graphics card or something that is causing the problem. It might also be the disc that is too scratched up, which causes issue with the copy protection, I should try to crack the game and see if that works.
By the way, if you are getting colour issues with older games, try turning of explorer while running the game.

This is hard... Red Alert for its cheesy acting.. Starcraft for its awesome story.. AoM for the theme... But the strategy game that i liked for its gameplay is the Anno series.
Spent countless hours on Anno 1503 as a kid, but i like the newer ones (discluding 2070, haven't played yet) just because of the graphical updates and more content.

Do I really need to pick one? I can't so here is a list (including tactical games):
Stars!, Crusader Kings 2, Victoria 2, Civilization 2, Age of Wonders, Elven Legacy, Emperor of the Fading Suns, Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim, Company of Heroes, Jagged Alliance 2, Blood Bowl, Master of Magic, Sacrifice, Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital & Warzone 2100 are the ones that just popped up in my head.

This is the best RTS game ever created! I spent so much of my life on that game and I can still come back and just jump in a game and get lost in its awesomeness!
