Actually, I think the first game I bought was Dust an elysian tail. Also, ty for the giveaways! Even though I am still not painted white.

An ex-pirate? I know that feel. You can play any existing game, you loot games like a greedy bastard until you reach a point where you can't continue doing it. So much effort by the developers making all those games, and nothing is being given in return. You start feeling bad for it, and stop pirating every single game you see. Next you start buying all your games. Now you can play less games than before, but you feel good this way. Every single game you earn with your money now is more special.
So yeah. Can I be in your whitelist? I want Skyrim, hahaha.
(Sorry for my bad english)

I've played a pirated version of Half-Life and Counter-Strike a long time ago. Then my uncle gifted me a original CD of CS:CZ (Asian Edition) that did not have much content but it was original so I played it. Later the same uncle gifted me another CD of CS1 : Anthology. It stayed in the box for almost 5 years before I acquired a proper internet connection to download and install Steam. :D. I activated it and got TFC, DMC and Ricochet as a bonus ^^.

Its kind of a tricky question for me. Technically, my first Steam purchase was before Steam existed. Back in the day, when even I was a youngin', one used to register games with the individual publishers. Although it was rarely mandatory, I still did it for patch notifications and whatnot. And when Valve put out Steam, it automatically added those old game registrations to one's Steam account, provided you used the same email account. Of course, I didn't actually realize this until I bought the Orange Box in 2008 and it had a Steam code.

I'm not a big fan of Valve games, but I'm sad I missed out on the whole Orange Box hype back then.

Not the first game I bought, but rather the first time I spent my own money on a game was a $5 donation (yes) to a small web-based game that I can't recall the name now.

I'd like to enter Skyrim giveaway, but I'm not on your whitelist :(
And my first game on steam was Portal and the next one was Darksiders. Just like you I used to pirate my games, but after receiving those two for free I've decided to go legit and also bought almost every game that I've played before. I'll never pirate anything anymore :)

So back in 2013 I bought a physical copy of Skyrim Legendary Edition. I've been mostly pirating games up to that point (Skyrim included) but the whole modding community and the sheer amount of enjoyment I got out of the game convinced me to buy a legit copy of it.
Never looked back since, I bought almost all games I enjoyed playing before and never felt the need to pirate a game again.
Now that this Skyrim paid modding controversy is over it is only fitting to give away a copy of Skyrim Legendary Edition.
The giveaway is for whitelisted people only, however I'd be more than happy to add more people to my list. Just leave a comment and I'll get back to you if I decided to add you to my whitelist.
[Update] I'm trying to skim through the comments every now and then and whitelist people. If I just comment "whitelisted" or sth without a meaningful reply is not because I don't care about what your saying in your comment, I'm just simply way too tired to respond properly. (woke up at 3.30am today after 2 hours of sleep etc)
There is also a giveaway for Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins for the rest of you, so that you don't miss out. (both are excellent games, dare to say much much better than an un-modded Skyrim).
Without further ado:
The Elder Scrolls Skyrim Legendary Edition
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age: Origins
