Favorite nonhistorical 4X game series?
From this list..
Does seem a bit of an oversight to have something as simplistic as Warlock listed, but not give mention to Age of Wonders. :P
I mean, most of the other serieses [even series in which I quite enjoyed a game or two of, like Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes from the Fallen Enchantress series] end up having lackluster overall reviews, so can get excused from mention on those grounds (though then why include Eador? >.>), but AoW has always been a very well received series.
That said, I'm more confused as to why the poll is based on series, and yet "Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth" is listed instead of "Civliization". I feel like a lot of other votes are going to pop in just 'cause no other Civilization option exists within the poll. :P

Last.M's poll is asking for favorite non-historical games, that's why:)

Weirdly, I'm not entirely sure that I actually played that mod. Then again, it's been been so many years since I played Civ IV that I can't even tell you how many years it's been- so it may just be my recollections failing me. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that I actually still have my Civ IV install discs around to test the matter. :X
Gonna hafta look around for 'em, see if I can't dig 'em up. Civ IV was really the best Civ game, after all- it may be worth a revisit regardless. :) Nevermind that it'll be nice going back to a game with zone of control conflicts. Why V stripped away the Civilization series's most distinct feature, I'll never know. Not that I haven't spent ages trying to find a way to mod it back into V..
All that aside, Fall From Heaven 2 was quite a bit of fun (and is still often spoken of in the same breath as some of the best fantasy 4x games out there), don't go dismissing it so easily. :)

I think I have some experience with FFH, specifically the Age of Ice scenario. But it never really grabbed me. Might give it another try in the future.
On the topic of best Civ, BTS is still the one for me, but I've yet to play the Civ V expansions or Civ VI. Mostly I'm just annoyed at how V was such a mixed bag of great and terrible ideas. I really wish we could get the not-to-the-death combat and the much improved city territory sprawl from V into IV, maybe take the hexes too. And custom religions. And civics. But screw non-stackable military units, city-states, undemolishable capitals (including city-states) and global happiness. Still undecided on road and building maintenance.
What I really wish to see in a Civ game though is custom wonders. Having to build just the standard set of historical ones and losing your progress upon someone else completing it first is just not fun. There should be no option for someone else to beat you to a wonder, instead they should be dynamic, generated based on the culture/religion/etc of the faction that starts building one.

The expansions make V playable (I didn't find the base game to be), but even the base game of Civ IV alone is probably still a more compelling game. Add in that modding is a lot buggier in V, and it's a hard one to deal with. I'm really not sure about Civ VI, by this point- the reviews indicating that it's as troubled as Civ V and relying as heavily on expansions to form a basic game doesn't bode well for it expanding to the point of challenging Civ IV at final quality.

There's a fair number of mods available to avoid that, from "Once you (or any civ) starts a wonder, it locks out for others" to Civ-specific bonuses that give that effect exclusively to your civilization, to making wonders "faction" based, to mods that prevent AI from building wonders (but giving them military boosts in place of wonders to more-than-compensate).
I'm on board with you with it being an annoying mechanic, but so far I've managed to mod it to more favorable preferences without issue. :)

Welp, Endless Legend is a lil bit hard for me, since I am mostly a Civ fag. But I tried it for several hours, managed to win a game etc. But still Civ 5 is number one for me from 4x/Strategy genre. Also played a lot of AoE 2 and 3 when I was younger.
I still have to find a time to try out Endless Space, as I won it here on steamgifts. :)
Thanks for the giveaway.

I would like to join the group. I am playing TW games since my history with PC began. I've played every title except Warhammer. In the past I played Rise of Nations and Age of Mythology so much, I am waiting for a sale to buy them on Steam and play again. I never had the opportunity to play Paradox titles and 4x space games, though I want to try them.

i did spend so much time withg GalCiv 2 long time ago
but when i try it again after playing Endless Space, i found that a couple of things could have done better
i hope Galciv 3 did that right
about pool: you forgot about Homeworld, and Stellaris have very good opinion
and 2 fantasy games dont fit with others:)
i cant belive that warlok have more votes than eador, it was nice game, but so simple to me
also eador was very different than other 4x games, maybe it is reason

Countless hours spent on the Civ series and Alpha Centauri, which I thought what Civ: Beyond Earth would be like. :(
I've been trying to get into Endless Space and Endless Legend as well but got distracted by FPS and other quick quick games. XD

It has been 5 months of strategy games already! Time does fly so fast when you're having fun! I can't believe I haven't created a GA for a 4X game yet 0.0
Here is the giveaway. Lvl 1+
Change of plans, Stellaris is the early unlock in the next Humble Monthly, so if you already have the game or end up getting it from HB, we'd like to invite you to play with us! Here's the topic I'm not sure if you need to be part of the steam group to see, but if you can't open the link let me know and I'll try to fix it. Thanks!
Link to HB for the lazy
I'd also invite y'all to join our group for strategy enthusiasts and participate in our little community if you can enter the giveaway. (i.e. you're level 1, at least)
Just let me know in the comments below if you want an invite. Don't forget to tell us which strategy games you like/ have been playing / that kind of stuff :)
