Background: I notified a winner of one of my GAs that I'm about to send him a friend invite on Steam to deliver a key. I then sent the invite, and the following day he approached me over chat with the following:

3:46 PM - [Winner]: Hi
3:46 PM - [Winner]: Gimme teh game lol
3:47 PM - [Winner]: If I don't have Mobile Authenticator, will I still get the game instantly?
3:51 PM - [Winner]: hey
3:52 PM - [Winner]: I won [game name]
3:53 PM - [Winner]: you gotta deliver it
3:53 PM - [Winner]: ha

This text ^ is what the poll is about.

Further clarification from the winner after I sent him a link to this thread:

12:02 AM - [Winner]: Lol man, people seem overly upset
12:02 AM - [Winner]: it';s sad that they don't know the context
12:03 AM - [Winner]: you should mention that you were online and I sent those messages to wake you up
12:03 AM - [Winner]: And it's a shame you can't convey emotions through the chat
12:04 AM - [Winner]: I meant to sound like a "bro" when saying "gimme teh game lol"
12:04 AM - [Winner]: people interpreted it as rude thoughg
12:06 AM - [Winner]: but if i see you online in chat, it communicates: "I'm ready to chat", therefore ready to give the key
12:07 AM - [Winner]: 7 minutes of waiting when you think the person is ready is long; imagine waiting 7 minutes in some game lobby
12:09 AM - [Winner]: The paradox is, I'm reportedly so rude but it's me who doesn't make mountains out of molehills

Note that I didn't see this clarification so it should not factor into your vote (which is about the text above the line). If it changes your view in any way, please add a comment.

The Aftermath

I just had a long chat with the winner. He explained his point of view further and I'm now pretty sure that this unpleasant situation resulted from a combination of (1) me not making it clear that I will contact the winner rather than the other way around, (2) the winner expecting that people who are seen on Steam as Online are actually available for chat, (3) the winner not knowing what to say when he initiated the chat and awkwardly choosing the wrong words, feeling they they are lighthearted and not understanding how they can be perceived, and (4) the winner, as a new user, not knowing what's accepted and what isn't in terms of rushing GA creators.

Bottom line: Key delivered, activated and marked as received. All's well that ends well :-)

If it is a Gift and expensiver unbundled Game i wouldnt give it to him and end.
For some cheap bundled Game its not worth the hassle and punishment(?) you get for not delivering. There you can wait the 7 Days and deliver it. Of course thats only my Opinion.

The only example i had would been someone who didnt acitvate his win and told me right away she gives it to her boyfriend and wont activate it herself.

edit: its always nice that you arent even allowed to state your opinion without some butt hurts blacklisting you for it :P

I guess it's someone new, who won for the first time and is very excited about it.

I'd almost put a wager on that the winner is an experienced user who won a few games (or even quite a few games) before. I've met maybe two of these demanding jerkwads who were new to winning (out of… two dozen or more by now… kinda lost track after a few months).

I would say I am very fortunate to only encounter just one such loser so far on this amazing platform. And I let it be an undelivered GIB just because it was a matter of principals.

It wasn't his first win, but he is still new to this site, which is why I preferred to deliver via chat. I normally just send the key directly via the site.

I guess we should educate and assimilate this raw Gem rather than throwing him away. Maybe he turns out to be good. :-)

When I used to do more trading I gave a user a key in chat and they replied with 'LOL YOU HAVE BEEN SCAMMED AND YOU ARE GOING TO GET NOTHING!'. I was just in the middle of deciding how to proceed when they replied with 'ONLY JOKING BET YOU WERE SCARED LOL' and gave me my key. I ended up trading with them a few more times and we became sort of friends and even got co-op achievements in a game together. Their idea of a joke remained exactly as crap though. Since then I try and give people the benefit of the doubt - sometimes it can just be a case of humour not translating very well or people having naff social skills rather than actually being dicks.

Send the key and blacklist, I think it is the best to do.

There was two guys like that on my last giveaways.
The first added me and sent some message asking the game. I said I wasn't home and will send the game when I got home.
Some minutes after, bunch of messages again.
The second was the best. Added me too and started insinuating that I was trying to steal him, that I marked as sent without sending (and it was a key, so if I mark the steamgifts deliver it to the winner). I said I didn't and wasn't home (it was in the same day).

I thought to let them to wait the 7 days but sent the keys when I arrived home. Was better like that.
If was the first giveaway they won I think I could understand but they already won many games.

Winner Whiner is either not patient or very, very eager to play whatever game he's won from you. Maybe both. In any case, I consider this behaviour quite rude and would be slightly offended. I would probably make him wait the whole week before sending out the game. Just because I can. And to piss him off even more.

Oh, and I would probably also add whiner to my BL too, because why not.

I wouldn't really mind that, for one reason - you added him first, not the other way around. Yeah, he's being a little impatient, but since you said he messaged you "the next day" after the friend invite and those timestamps are late afternoon. he's probably been excited to hear from you all day. I know if someone added me with the promise of free stuff and then didn't say anything for a day, I'd be wishing they'd hurry up too.

you added him first, not the other way around.

That's an important point and my main lesson here. My initial message to him was too open ended. In addition, I sent him the friend invite which gave him a chance to start first and say the wrong things. Moving forward I think I'll use something like "Please add me on Steam so that I can give you the key to your win. Thanks!". This would prevent the problem, because until I accept the request the winner can't say anything, and if I'm the first to talk there's a better chance that the chat would start off on the right foot, or at least so I hope.

Because when people are new to the site, it's good to be there and guide them through it if needed. See this post for how it can sometime go very wrong... :-)

I don't get that, what I was thinking has been proven in the updated post.
The guy did seem sarcastic with "Gimme teh game lol", I mean, no one actually talks like that.
Eh, idk, like he said: it's mountains outta molehills.

It's hard to tell from text, but I think he was just joking.

"Gimme teh game lol" That sounds to me like he was trying to sound like a begger on purpose and laughing about it.

Edit: As for the rest of the comments, it sounds like he was impatient and was trying to get your attention which is kind of annoying, but that's just how some people are.

It's all your fault! You should always know exactly when someone else is waiting on you and immediately drop all other activity to attend to them... just like you would with a teenager... or a cat... or a two-year old...

7 minutes of waiting when you think the person is ready is long; imagine waiting 7 minutes in some game lobby

This scream kid to me even louder than the original chat log. Waiting 7 minutes is nothing, once you reached a certain age.

Edit: Of course you should send the win. Personally I would want to limit communication with the user to a minimum, so sending the key sooner than later.

Their example of patience just doesn't deliver if they were trying to earn empathy.
I don't think I could have held back without saying "yes, now imagine waiting a week".. if they claim to be such a "bro"

Nah, this is the worst time span to wait for something to finish. Too short to switch to other task(s) and too long to just stare at the screen
It really can bite hard into effective work-time

Bad idea... If the guy knows how to deal with stuff, he would have contacted Support for nothing being given away, and if the gifter decides to re-roll, it might be worse, since Support knows now that he was active all the time.

Exceptionally rude in my interpretation. You dont speak that way with anyone unless there's an established friendship that can forego banter in such a way. Entering a friends list from a won ga gives anyone the right to be anything but civil and respectful. Thats my 2 cents, spend them as you wish.
