Was wandering about my profile and stumble upon blacklist graph. Apparently a lot of people added me to theirs.
In the beginning I had my moments I'm not proud of. Something like: won a giveaway, saw no key right away and tried to report a person, once I tried to giveaway a free game(yeah, I'm that kind of guy who doesn't read rules beforehand). That's fine and well deserved. Though stats show that most occurred in a short time period and then another recent one after few months.
Makes me wonder.

So, what are typical reasons for being blacklisted? Maybe there are some unwritten rules or SG etiquette?

I don't blacklist anyone unless they fail to mark a giveaway game as received, if you make me contact support to get it marked you're being blacklisted..

I'm pretty easy going though in all honesty..

Breaking the rules. I don't care about leeches anymore except those high level users creating only group giveaways to farm CV but entering all high level public giveaways, those are the worst.

most i don't even know why, once for winning a game (some gifters do this) and here comes the best of all times:
the most unexpected way i got blacklisted once was for giving away for free to anyone who wanted a game items from my inventory...

Several users blacklist others for creating region restricted giveaways only, that is probably your case...

It doesn't matter tbh. The option is there for people to ignore you for any reason. I got blacklisted just cause i have given my opinion on a topic but that's fine. Meaning i can't enter his giveaway is all, and that's it. Other than that, this shouldn't bother you unless someone you know/talk to blacklsts you and you have no idea why.

Keep giving away and have fun!

Politics, I used to only be blacklisted by 3 people. Commented in a political thread. It's 20 now :3

i like when people think they are better than others and say

i don't use blacklists, they are petty and negative

but of course you don't use blacklists. you only make whitelist and group giveaways... so generous and merciful!

realising i wasn't contributing much, i decided to make a 24 giveaway advent calendar. nothing much, just bundled stuff, but better than nothing.

result: my first 2 blacklistings in 10 months.

conclusion: better to just stay low?

It's a difficult question. And I've had a difficult week and for the first time in some months I've drunk enough booze to look at my own blacklist graph, despite knowing that it would depress me. And I've also drunk enough to have opinions despite knowing that it will inevitably get me more blacklists.

Most people who pay attention to their blacklists will notice they get more pretty much every time they do anything. So it is easy to assume that people blacklist each other for no reason. But whenever anyone complains that they got blacklisted for no reason it is generally pretty easy to find that there was a reason.

People do get blacklisted for reasons. They might be good reasons or bad reasons. They might be petty reasons or reasons so dreadful that they can't be mentioned for fear of getting a suspension for calling out. They might be ethical or unethical reasons. I'm often quite understanding when people blacklist me for drunkposting or hiding puzzles in flamebait threads - but I'll still blacklist people in return.

I think it's a steam gifts urban myth that people blacklist each other just for breathing or for cheap thrills. But I still can't help but notice that many of the most vocal and prolific blacklisters (and whitelisters) don't actually make giveaways so it certainly isn't worth taking such things too seriously.

But with regards to the original question - the usual reasons that I have noticed for blacklisting are as follows;

  • Winning too many games
  • Not making enough giveaways
  • Making too many group giveaways and private giveaways
  • Making elitist high level giveaways
  • Making low level giveaways that will probably be wasted on somebody undeserving
  • Making puzzles, trains or other giveaways that are too inefficient to enter
  • Making too many region restricted giveaways
  • Not making enough giveaways restricted to deserving regions
  • Spamming generic thanks
  • Not saying thanks after winning a giveaway
  • Clearly not participating in the community by having more wins than comments
  • Being too Russian
  • Not being Russian enough
  • Being in a racist/nationalistic/homophobic Steam group
  • Not being in a racist/nationalistic/homophobic Steam group
  • Being in an anti-racist/pro-LGBT Steam group
  • Liking Undertale
  • Having an avatar or name that references My Little Pony
  • Having an avatar or name that references anything that might possibly be related to furries or yiffing
  • Having an avatar or name that is just plain stupid
  • Hogging a good username
  • Posting opinions about controversial topics such as politics/religion/civil rights/video games/aesthetic fonts
  • Posting/creating bots and scripts
  • Using bots and scripts
  • Possibly using bots and scripts
  • Maybe using bots and scripts
  • Well it looked like it a bot to me
  • Well that's exactly what a bot would say
  • Using sgtools
  • Not reading giveaway descriptions
  • Expecting people to read giveaway descriptions
  • Not having enough CV
  • Exploiting CV
  • Being a game collector who already has enough games
  • Being a trader
  • Being a scammer
  • Complaining about being too poor to make giveaways while having way more games than most users
  • Complaining about being too poor while boasting about your expensive gaming rig on your profile
  • Actually being too poor to make giveaways
  • Being rich and elitist enough to make giveaways
  • Being rude
  • Because somebody blacklisted you first
  • Breaking rules (regifting, unactivated wins. leaking links, multiple wins, posting ref links, etc)
  • Not playing your wins
  • Playing your wins in offline mode
  • Farming your wins for cards
  • Not even farming your wins for cards
  • Complaining about being blacklisted, because those guys must have done something wrong
  • You saw they blacklisted somebody else, because that shit is never right
  • Simply thinking somebody is an asshole that you wouldn't want to give a game to

And don't forget - any time you complain about being blacklisted it's only fair in the interests of balance to complain just as much about all the users who excluded you by making high level giveaways, group and whitelist giveaways, region restricted giveaways, etc. Or just not making giveaways at all.

And above all - if you don't want to be blacklisted then never post comments, never post giveaways and never enter giveaways either!
