Looks like the gems are being returned now (they are currently disappearing and reappearing in the inventory). The Auction page itself still has "closed" notice though.

Do you remember snow globes? That were crafting items for previous winter sale. So, one week before summer sale they appeared on market again and I thought that these globes will be turned into summer sale crafting cards and I bought around 600 globes. And guess that happened after? Yes, they all disappeared next day. Steam support said that it was a bug, they were very sorry but you will not receive any refund. That's a sad story. Hope you, guys, will be more lucky :p

That's what I was doing at first, but then I decided to try my luck at getting some of those gems for $0.03 each. It took a lot of attempts to get the buy orders to go through; maybe 1/20 did. I'm still not sure why they made the gems marketable anyways. That just seemed like asking for trouble.

I made a few boosters and sold the cards for like 6 bucks. I got a foil who's at like 30 dollahs but I don't think somebody would buy it.

yeah, what a clusterf*ck... I had to go to work in the evening, managed to put an order for those gems before living. Now my wallet is lighter for some $$, I have gem sacks in inventory - and nothing to do with them. I don't care much about auction (though getting additional badge would be nice), but I can't even find now how to convert those gems into boosters. That's disabled too atm? Or what?

opened one... those gems don't give any option other than just packing them back.

I wonder if Steam Cards Exchange, Tremor Games or any other sites that allow people to trade in cards took a big hit? If they weren't able to adjust the trade in prices in time, people could have traded stuff in for more than they cost to buy on the market or create with £/$/€0.03 sacks. I think the card exchange has an automated system of sorts to decide the trade-in value, but I don't know how fast that would have reacted and I don't know about other sites at all.

What's Steam Cards Exchange ever done to anyone?
I can understand people not liking Tremor if they think Tremor makes too much out of it and see it as exploitative, if thye're upset about not being able to get offers because of the country they live in, frustration through offers not working, or if they got banned for some shitty reasons. It can be a good way for some people to get games on one hand, but I can also see how people could have beef with them on the other.
I'm not seeing much of anything wrong with the cards exchange, shit, I've even donated Paypal to them in the past. I think it's a good service.

I have nothing against Steam Card Exchange, but Tremor Games resells bundle keys from charity bundles and allows exploitative and fake offers on their website. Their system is outright toxic for indie devs and they key hoard so they can resell games months after bundles are over.

Every year I feel it gets worse and worse. More shady things that are closer and closer to a sam. I don't like it.

From where I'm sitting, none of this happened. People complain about trading card prices being extremely low. I don't see any changes. Gems are being stolen, taken away. I didn't even know what these gems were.
That's what 8 hours of sleep will do for a man, right.

There's an update btw! http://steamcommunity.com/auction
The Auction will return shortly!
We apologize for the interruption. The yeti has been contaminated. We had an issue with Gems that means we need to reset and start again.
-All gems created by you will be returned to your inventory.
-All gems purchased by the Community Market will be reimbursed.
-All auction bids has been cancelled and the auction will be reset.
-Trades involving gems will be investigated on a case-by-case basis.

Now that it's back to normal, I wonder which game has highest gem per background/emotion at very cheap price?

I have a question regarding:
=> Additionally, anyone who traded away items in exchange for Steam Gems on the first day of bidding will receive a copy of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in their Inventory.
Correct me when Im wrong, I just trade 1 emoticon or background for a gem or whatever and get a free copy? Is it over?
When does the offer end? First day of bidding, until 15 Dec or what?
EDIT: CS:GO is second place on bidding list? doesnt make sense unless you need an extra copy?

Thats what it sounds like. I'm assuming it will happen at the end of the first bidding when they send out all the gifts to winners? Which is awesome because CSGO was one of the items I've wanted to pick up. I always forget to buy it in previous sales.

The better option I think is to sell your cards, but you won't gain much right now as the prices plummeted. But I don't think your should transform it in gems, it's low value and inefficient.

I'm trying to figure out how much money worth a "gem" but result is not satisfactory. For example, Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army cards, around $0.08 in Market worth 20 gems. By other side, Skullgirls cards, around $0.14 in Market worth 12 gems. That makes impossible to do any calculation.
So, Steam is playing with values of cards, probably making them worthless for us, and people who use big amount of gems on bids, most likely would be overpaying game retail price just for "winning a bid".
